The sea dragon thrashed about incessantly in the water, each movement causing countless deaths and injuries to the black sharks. Its massive jaws were never idle; its sharp teeth had already claimed the lives of countless black sharks.
The principle that many ants can kill an elephant is universally applicable.
These black sharks are like a persistent leech; no matter which direction the sea dragon swims, they can always find their target quickly. For that bite of food, they don't even care about their own lives and have completely lost their reason.
This tactic of inflicting heavy losses on both sides is something that even a sea dragon with a body of steel cannot withstand, given its ability to launch a sneak attack that can penetrate any obstacle.
The dark cave where Xiang Wan was hiding had long been stained with blood, reducing visibility on the already dim seabed to a minimum. She relied entirely on her mental power and the sounds coming from the seawater to see.
The siren had been swimming for over fifteen minutes, and a steady stream of black sharks continued to gather in this direction. Xiang Wan had never known that so many bloodthirsty black sharks could gather in the sea. It seemed that other ferocious beasts were also on their way, raising the danger level of the water to a new level.
Xiang Wan held the conch shell that the siren had given him in his hand, and then took out the unicorn horn, stroking the patterns on it.
Just a little longer, it will be over soon. The Sirens never disappoint her.
She didn't know when it started, but in this deep sea, if there was anyone she could completely trust, it was only the Sirens.
He proved to her through his actions time and time again that he would always do what he said, no matter how many difficulties there were, he would never break his promise.
Having experienced so many worlds, Xiang Wan was no longer the naive and trusting young woman she once was. Therefore, Siren never made any promises to her; he simply spoke casually about something that seemed easy but was actually fraught with danger.
For example, he once heard Xiang Wan jokingly mention ambergris, and two days later he received a large piece of sperm whale secretion, which now seems completely useless. It wasn't until later, when he overheard two giant jellyfish chatting, that he learned that the siren had followed the sperm whale all the way for this stuff, only to be stunned by its tail and sink to the bottom of the sea, almost becoming food for carnivorous creatures.
For example, she later overheard the ocean sunfish and the oarfish chatting and learned that, in order to feed herself as a baby, the siren had actually traveled to cold regions to find female whales that had given birth to calves to provide her with milk. Whales are so enormous, and they all have the instinct to protect their young. Xiang Wan simply couldn't imagine how the siren had managed to escape unscathed from the whale pod.
For example, when Xiang Wan wanted to see exotic sea creatures, Siren took her to an underwater volcano to observe the eyeless snails and seaweed that relied on the heat of the magma to survive, as well as the crystal-clear sea shrimp. Xiang Wan was so engrossed in her observation that she forgot Siren's body remained at a low temperature year-round, unlike her warm-blooded human form who could tolerate the environment near a volcano. That time, because they stayed there for a relatively long time, Siren's skin was at risk of peeling from the burns, but he still endured the discomfort of the high temperature for the sake of young Xiang Wan's curiosity, without revealing a single word to her.
There were many, many things that the Sirens had never told her, but when Xiang Wan heard them from other sea monsters, the shock she felt was immense.
There was a mermaid who did all sorts of seemingly effortless but actually dangerous things for her every day. Even though she guessed his purpose, it was all insignificant compared to his sacrifices. Despite her reluctance, Xiang Wan's heart slowly drew closer to him, and she began to trust him.
Therefore, it's unclear whether she's using Sirens primarily to avoid revealing her own identity, or whether it's because of this trust that Siren said Xiang Wan should just let him be.
When the sea dragon roared again, a lot of unfamiliar smells suddenly appeared in the seawater, which smelled very unpleasant.
Just as Xiang Wan was about to sound the horn, a familiar figure swam quickly toward her, entered the cave entrance, and pulled Xiang Wan to the deepest part of the dark cave. The figure then used the scattered rocks around to block the entrance.
Sensing that familiar energy fluctuation, Xiang Wan didn't resist, letting the Siren pull her to hide. After he quickly blocked the entrance, Xiang Wan heard a series of crashing sounds and the gnawing of teeth outside the cave, which lasted for a long time before dissipating.
Then, the sound of the churning sea continued until dawn.
Xiang Wan stayed quietly inside the cave, listening to the Sirens' subtle breathing. She didn't use her spiritual power to investigate his movements, but she knew that tears were streaming from the corners of her eyes, mingling with the seawater, as if the entire seabed was filled with her tears.
The siren is injured, seriously injured.
His breathing became weak, his tail almost stopped wagging, and a bloody smell gradually filled the seawater, which was particularly pungent in the small cave.
"Why?"
Xiang Wan faced out of the cave without turning around, afraid that the Sirens would remain silent under her gaze.
The siren's tail and arms were bitten, and even with the merman's powerful regenerative abilities, the wounds couldn't be completely healed. This shows just how dangerous his mission was.
“Oshina is the guardian of the ocean. I will protect you until you have truly grown up.”
Is that all? Xiang Wan doesn't believe it!
Mermaids are not natural guardians of the ocean.
The ocean is home to many ferocious creatures and enormous sea beasts, far beyond the capabilities of a mermaid who has transformed halfway through her life.
Xiang Wan still had some self-awareness. Besides, why should she, in her transformed body, spend her whole life guarding such a vast ocean?
