Having such an unreliable system was truly exasperating for Xiang Wan. She silently prayed that Nangong Chen wouldn't arrive so soon, but what she feared most came to pass. When her nominal husband pushed open the door, Xiang Wan was reclining in a chair, pretending to take a nap.
Nangong Chen frowned. "A lot of business partners have come. Come with me to meet them."
Xiang Wan pouted, but still got up, straightened her clothes, and went out arm in arm with Nangong Chen.
The garden of the manor was filled with tables, chairs, and various foods. As soon as Xiang Wan saw the food, her eyes glued to it, wishing she could immediately immerse herself in the delicious food. The original owner of this body probably hadn't eaten much that morning, and Xiang Wan had forgotten about it when she transmigrated. It would have been better if she hadn't seen the food, but seeing it and not being able to eat it was truly unbearable.
Nangong Chen seemed to notice Xiang Wan's unusual behavior, tightening his grip on her arm as if afraid she would run away. Xiang Wan could only wipe away her bitter tears, reluctantly turning her head away, silently telling herself she wouldn't eat anymore, she would eat later, before she felt a little better.
Nangong Chen, as expected of someone from a prestigious family, handled all kinds of people with ease and courtesy. Xiang Wan only needed to smile, nod, greet, and have a drink when appropriate. She kept smiling and toasting everyone until her facial muscles were practically twitching; she couldn't even remember who she'd met, only that she was unbearably hungry. Finally, after finishing all the toasts, Xiang Wan didn't linger and disappeared in a flash.
Nangong Chen didn't care; as long as it saved face, he went with Xiang Wan. He looked around and saw Liu Zixi with her parents. He smiled and walked over.
Xiang Wan ate in a corner, and after slightly filling her stomach, she slowed down, glancing at Nangong Chen as she ate. His tall figure stood out among the guests, making Liu Zixi appear quite petite. Judging by their height difference, they were practically the cutest height difference—meaning Nangong Chen could easily kiss Liu Zixi if he bent down. Both were good-looking, a pleasing sight together, the kind of couple that would make any yaoi fan scream and beg for a photo. It's a pity they weren't the targets of revenge.
Her intense gaze almost caught Nangong Chen's attention, so Xiang Wan had to suppress her inner itch and focus on eating. Occasionally, she would glance up at him, but she was quite satisfied. Yes, it perfectly matched her fantasy.
"Bride, hiding here and secretly watching your groom, are you that impatient?"
A mocking voice rang out from behind her. Xiang Wan turned around abruptly, her lips almost brushing against the other person's face. Startled, she retreated hastily, her face turning bright red.
"Yes, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to!"
Xiang Wan had some food residue left on the man's face. Seeing that he seemed oblivious, she picked up a napkin and quickly wiped his face. Now, a bit of food was stretched into a line, which, combined with the man's bewildered expression, looked absolutely hilarious.
"Pfft!" Xiang Wan couldn't help but burst out laughing.
The other person remained expressionless, raised his hand and wiped the crumbs with his left index finger, leaving them on his fingertip. He then rubbed them with his thumb, stared at Xiang Wan, and suddenly smiled, "The Black Swan Cake is admired worldwide. Nangong Chen is quite generous."
Xiang Wan put away her smile, glanced at the young man who had appeared out of nowhere, and felt that his behavior was rather frivolous and not worth getting close to. She decided it was best to keep her distance from him.
"I just thought the cake was delicious, so I hid here to eat more. I didn't peek."
He raised an eyebrow, looking at Xiang Wan with a half-smile, without saying a word.
"Sorry, I'm not feeling well and would like to go back to my room to rest. Please feel free to come to my room!"
As Xiang Wan spoke, she turned to leave.
"Wait a minute, it's only polite to reciprocate!"
As Xiang Wan turned her head, a finger darted out and scribbled across her face. She watched as the person walked away laughing, still reeling from the sight. After they left, Xiang Wan wiped her face, a small piece of cake falling off. Instantly enraged, she stormed off in the direction the person had gone.
"Stop right there!"
Xiang Wan didn't dare to shout loudly, so she could only walk quickly and shout at a volume that the person in front of her could just hear.
The man kept walking, and Xiang Wan chased after him relentlessly. As she saw fewer and fewer people on the road, Xiang Wan sensed something was wrong. Just as she was about to give up, the man in front of her turned around and provoked her, so she had no choice but to quickly step forward and grab his clothes.
"Stop right there!" With no one around, Xiang Wan's voice grew louder. "Who are you? What are you doing standing behind me like that? I already told you I didn't mean to smear cake on your face, I wiped it off for you, why are you so vindictive? Are you even a man?"
As Xiang Wan chased after him, her temper grew increasingly fierce, and words slipped out without thinking. As soon as the words left her mouth, Xiang Wan realized that she might have gone too far, but she couldn't bring herself to say it, so she could only hold her head high and stand firm.
The man opposite her seemed not to have heard her words. He suddenly leaned closer, his eyes fixed on Xiang Wan, and said softly, "Do you want to try whether I'm a man or not?"
Suddenly, the air was filled with the scent of male hormones, and Xiang Wan took a big step back, her face turning somewhat pale.
"Who...who are you? I am Lady Nangong! Dare to be disrespectful to me!"
"Ha!" the man suddenly laughed. "You're quite an interesting little girl, too bad..."
"Who's the little girl? I've already graduated from university. Please call me by my name, or Sister Liu, thank you!"
"Trying to appear mature? Too young."
"Anyone can pretend to be young, but pretending to be old takes skill."
"Little girl, you're sharp-tongued."
"You're not that old either. Let me reiterate, I'm not a little girl!"
"Okay, let's compare ages. How old are you this year?"
"I'm this year...you go first!"
"Unfortunately, I'm exactly one cycle older than you."
"Trying to look mature? Who would believe that?"
"Anyone with eyes can see that."
"They're blind!"
"Really? Look behind you!"
"Are you up to something again?"
"I'm not lying to you this time, turn around!"
Xiang Wan turned around suspiciously, only to see Nangong Chen standing behind her with an unhappy expression.
"Why are you here? When did you arrive?"
Nangong Chen didn't reply to Xiang Wan's words, but looked up at the person behind her, "Uncle, when did you get back? Why didn't you let me know?"
"Notify you? So that the old man can lock me up?"
“That’s not what I meant…” Nangong Chen frowned.
"Alright, whether you let me know or not, I'm back, just in time for your wedding banquet. But speaking of which, where did you find this bride? She's quite interesting."
Xiang Wan was speechless. It turned out that she had come to settle scores with him, but was only lured here to argue with him.
While the two of them were talking, Xiang Wan tried hard to recall the plot she had received, and only then did she remember this character. She was immediately dumbfounded.
