This was a desolate, wild mountain area, the only route Xiang Wan could take to reach Shuiyao Town after leaving Xihong Village. She found the official road too circuitous and deliberately chose to travel in a straight line. Unexpectedly, she encountered a living person who had instantly turned into a corpse.
Humans generally possess three "fires" on their bodies, one on the top of the head and one on each shoulder. Those with strong yang energy have these three fires burning brightly, causing even ghosts to retreat in fear of being burned. Those who are ill or tainted by yin energy are more susceptible to possession because their yang fire is easily extinguished. Especially when traveling late at night, when the yin energy is strong, a person's yang fire weakens. If someone calls their name from behind, turning around will extinguish the fire on their shoulders, allowing a ghost to seize the opportunity to either possess them or steal their soul.
The man surnamed Zou, whom San'er was called, must have had his three fires extinguished in an instant. An evil spirit entered through his skull, devouring his soul and transforming him from a living person into a corpse controlled by the evil spirit. Judging from the degree of his corpse's decomposition, San'er must have been possessed by the evil spirit as soon as darkness fell. Otherwise, his body wouldn't have been able to withstand the exorcism sword's attack.
The exorcising sword can easily slay ghosts. However, if it's attached to a corpse, the ghost could attach itself to any part of the body, making it difficult to distinguish unless it's forced out first.
The corpse, completely ignoring Xiang Wan's attempts to stop it, lunged at the man surnamed Zou in the tree, leaping several times and almost reaching his legs.
Xiang Wan flew forward, kicked the corpse aside, took out a talisman from her bosom, infused it with spiritual power, and slashed at the corpse with her sword.
"Brother, don't hurt him!"
The corpse-driver hanging from the tree was yelling loudly, almost disrupting Xiang Wan's pace.
Xiang Wan paused, her luck suddenly rising, and decided to use the immobilization talisman on the man surnamed Zou.
If, during the fight, this man surnamed Zou were to speak again and disturb Xiang Wan's mind, causing her to accidentally turn around and extinguish the yang fire on her shoulder, then ghosts within a radius of hundreds of miles would likely come looking for her.
She hadn't forgotten that her body was a favorite of ghosts.
The man surnamed Zou was immobilized. Xiang Wan then activated her exorcism spell, and the exorcism sword, gleaming with cold light, rushed towards the corpse.
The corpse leaped ten feet high and, without regard for anything else, bit into a tree branch. With a "crack," the branch with the man surnamed Zou hanging from it snapped off.
As the tip of Xiang Wan's sword pierced the corpse's chest cavity, a hand slapped her shoulder from behind.
