Nanwan Village is a very peaceful village with a small population, only about a hundred households and a little over six hundred people.
There is a two-story brick house in the back of the village.
Judging from the color of the bricks, it can be seen that the building was recently constructed.
There is a large yard in front of this brick house, where many vegetables are planted. In one corner, loofahs have climbed all over the wall.
It is harvest season now.
Everyone in Nanwan Village had a smile on their face.
What could be more joyful than a bountiful harvest?
"Dad, Dad, the hen laid an egg!" A girl wearing a maroon cotton shirt, with two thick braids swinging, held two eggs in her hands and shouted loudly.
"Okay, okay, Dad will boil these two eggs and give them to us to eat later." Ning Anping came out of the room, looking at the girl in front of him with a smile.
"No, I don't want it. I want to save it for Grandma." Ning Hongzao pouted. "Here, one for you and one for Grandma."
Ning Hongzao is sixteen years old this year, which is considered a young lady in the countryside.
Last year saw many significant events: the passing of the nation's three top leaders cast a shadow of gloom over the entire country. However, the digital clique, which had been thriving in China for many years, was also wiped out, and then the college entrance examination was reinstated.
Like a bolt from the blue, it pierced through the confusion of the country, giving everyone hope, especially the educated youth who had been sent to the countryside.
Ning Hongzao also took the college entrance examination.
She has always been a good student, and with her older brother providing her with extra study materials, she has a very good chance of getting into university this time.
"Hey, Hongzao, when will your college acceptance letter arrive?" Aunt Hua from next door came out carrying a basin of water and asked when she saw the Ning family's courtyard gate open and Ning Hongzao inside.
"I'm not sure either, but it should be soon. What about Qingqing? Has Qingqing's acceptance letter arrived yet?"
"Qingqing applied to the same school as you, but neither of you came. Why would her? I don't know what's wrong with this girl these past few days. She keeps running up the mountain. I don't know what's so attractive about the mountain?"
"The autumn harvest is over, and the wild fruits on the mountain are ripe. We should go pick some." Ning Hongzao chuckled dryly. There was nothing particularly attractive about the mountain, but there were certainly attractive boys.
The village secretary's son, Han Qingshan, has been sketching on the mountain lately, painting things that are incomprehensible to most people. Surprisingly, he has attracted a lot of female fans.
"Old Ning, you're the best. Hongzao is so well-behaved, always helping out at home."
"Yes, I think so too. My family's red dates are the best."
Hearing someone praise his daughter, Ning Anping touched his chin, looking quite pleased with himself.
"You're getting all worked up over me, aren't you?" Aunt Hua teased Ning Anping a couple more times before turning and going back to her own home.
"My daughter is a source of pride for me." Ning Anping patted Ning Hongzao's head. He thought that the best thing he had ever done in his life was bringing Hongzao back. Without Hongzao, his life would have been much less fun.
"Uncle Anping, Uncle Anping, Hongzao's college acceptance letter has arrived!" Just as the father and daughter were discussing who should get the eggs, Ning Hongzhi, who worked at the town's post office, came riding his bicycle over excitedly, waving a letter.
"Uncle Anping, Hongzao passed the exam."
Ning Hongzhi's father and Ning Anping are cousins, so he is also Ning Hongzao's cousin. His cousin was able to get into a city university, so he, as her cousin, also felt proud, right?
At the post office, many people looked at me with envy.
"Uncle Anping, the red dates are really impressive."
"Yes, my family's jujubes have always lived up to expectations." Ning Anping took the admission notice. Although she was already prepared, she still felt her eyes well up with tears when she saw the notice.
"Dad, why are you crying? I passed the exam, that's a good thing. You should be smiling, not crying." Ning Hongzao took out a plain white handkerchief and wiped Ning Anping's tears.
"Yes, yes, it's a good thing. Dad is so happy. My daughter Hongzao is really amazing."
"Brother Hongjun, what about Qingqing's admission notice?"
"Qingqing passed the exam too. I was busy giving this to you first, and now I'll go give it to Aunt Hua." Ning Hongjun smiled and took another notification from his bag, then went to the next room. A moment later, cheers could be heard coming from the next house.
"What's going on at Aunt Hua's house? They seem so happy. I could hear the cheers from over there." A Phoenix brand bicycle stopped in front of her house. Ning Hongzao looked up and her smile deepened. The dimples at the corners of her mouth appeared and disappeared, making her look even sweeter.
"Brother, you're back? How long will your break be this time?"
"I can stay for three days." The man on the bicycle was about twenty years old, wearing a Lenin suit, and had a tall and slender figure.
He parked the bicycle and reached out to pat Ning Hongzao's head.
“Brother, Qingqing and I have both been admitted to the city university.” Ning Hongzao handed her admission notice to her brother Ning Hongze.
Ning Hong looked at the acceptance letter, her expression softening further. "Hongzao, you're amazing! I knew you could do it."
It's no wonder that he saw the village chief walking with such a swagger on the road just now, since two college students came from Nanwan Village at the same time.
In the evening, Grandma Ning killed the old hen in the house, firstly to celebrate Ning Hongzao's admission to university, and secondly to nourish Ning Hongze, who rarely came home.
