Early in the morning, after returning from his morning exercise, Leng's father bought steamed buns, fried dough sticks, and soy milk.
After setting out breakfast, Leng's mother went to wake Leng Yue. She knocked on the door a few times, and when no one answered, she called out, "Yueyue, get up and have breakfast."
When no one responded, Leng's mother pushed the door open and went in. She found Leng Yue fast asleep in front of the computer!
"Why is this child sleeping here? Honestly, isn't she afraid of catching a cold?" Mother Leng complained as she pushed Leng Yue, "Yueyue, go to bed."
After calling for a while, Leng Yue finally opened her eyes, drooling, "Mom, why are you here?"
"Silly girl, I've come to call you for dinner." Leng's mother said, tidying up Leng Yue's desk. "Look at the mess you've made! Are you going to sleep like this all night? Honestly, why are you so busy?"
Leng Yue rubbed her eyes. "Mom, you and Dad eat first. I'll be there a while. My manuscript is due today!"
Seeing her like this, Mother Leng sighed and went out.
While eating his fried dough sticks, Mr. Leng noticed that Mrs. Leng seemed unhappy, so he asked, "What's wrong? Is Yueyue sleeping in again? That's just how her job is, don't interfere too much, or the child will get annoyed..."
“She didn’t sleep in, she was busy all night. She wasn’t like this before,” Mrs. Leng complained to Mr. Leng in a low voice. “I’m worried that Yueyue will ruin her health. You know, she was just discharged from the hospital…”
"Alright, alright," said Mr. Leng, handing Mrs. Leng a bowl of porridge. "Eat, eat. The child is grown up; she knows what she's doing."
Mother Leng sighed, stirring the porridge in her bowl with a spoon. "Mealtimes are getting quieter and quieter these days. Zihao hasn't been coming lately, and it feels like half of our family is missing!"
"Missing your grandson?" Mr. Leng said with a smile. "If you miss him, we'll just call and invite our son and the others over for dinner."
"I guess he'll have to work overtime again and won't be able to come," said Mrs. Leng, not holding out much hope. "It would be good if Zihao could come back."
"I miss my grandson too. I'd better ask my son if he can come back!" Mr. Leng quickly finished his meal and went to make the call.
Seeing this, Mrs. Leng stopped eating and listened from the side. As soon as Mr. Leng hung up the phone, he quickly asked, "Can they come?"
Mr. Leng shook his head. "We have to work overtime again, but they said they'll come together as a family of three this weekend."
"This weekend?" Mrs. Leng said, flipping through the calendar. "It's only Wednesday today, there are still three or four days to go!"
"Look how anxious you are," said Mr. Leng helplessly. "It's only been a few days. If you're so worried, let's go pick up our grandson from school right now."
"Forget it, they all said they won't let us pick up Zihao this week, so let's not go. We don't want to upset them!" Mrs. Leng complained.
Father Leng shook his head. "Old woman, I've never seen you so sentimental when you're busy. What's wrong with you today?"
Mrs. Leng looked at Mr. Leng, "Actually, I'm worried about our daughter. She's so old and doesn't even have a boyfriend. What will she do after we're gone? So, I also want Zihao and Yueyue to get closer..."
"See, see, you're here again. If the girl hears this, she'll definitely be unhappy!" Mr. Leng cleared the table and pulled Mrs. Leng into the kitchen. "You, don't always think so much. Take it slow, things will get better."
"Sigh, what can we do if we don't take it slow?" Mrs. Leng chimed in. "You don't know, when I picked Yueyue up yesterday, I saw Aunt Li. She was saying, openly and subtly, that Yueyue isn't normal, and she kept praising her son-in-law. I was so angry!"
“How is our Yueyue any worse than her daughter? She has a good education and she’s good-looking! Besides, you don’t know, her son-in-law is all talk and no action. In reality, he’s a monkey with a pointed face. Who would want him?” Mrs. Leng said indignantly.
As Mr. Leng washed the dishes, he listened to Mrs. Leng's complaints, but he couldn't bring himself to speak. He knew his wife would be upset if he told her not to talk about other people's business. But as a grown man, he couldn't join in, so he remained silent.
"Are you even listening to me?" Seeing that her husband remained silent, Mrs. Leng angrily pinched him.
Mr. Leng nearly dropped the bowl. "What are you doing?"
"Why aren't you saying anything?" Mother Leng asked angrily.
“I heard everything you said. Just don’t take it to heart by arguing with Aunt Li. They’re not highly educated, so it’s understandable that they might have some petty bourgeois traits. Why should you, someone with a higher education, argue with her?” Father Leng wiped his hands and took off his apron.
“You have a high level of education, but I don’t! At most, I’m just a family member with a high level of education.” Mother Leng turned her head unhappily.
"Family member, can we stop being angry? I think we should think about what delicious food we can cook for our grandson when he comes back this weekend!" Mr. Leng changed the subject.
As expected, Mrs. Leng took the bait and went to look through the recipes, saying she wanted to study them carefully and give her grandson some good nourishment.
Seeing that his wife was no longer dwelling on Aunt Li's matter, Mr. Leng secretly breathed a sigh of relief. He turned around, picked up his teacup, put on his shoes, and went out for a stroll.
Leng Yue finally finished translating and revising all the manuscripts before 10 o'clock. She composed an email, clicked send, and it was exactly 10 o'clock. Only after the other party replied that they had received the message did Leng Yue log off.
Stretching out a big yawn, Leng Yue exclaimed, "Finally, I can get some sleep. I'm so tired!"
After finishing her sentence, Leng Yue fell asleep immediately. Perhaps she was too tired, because Leng Yue slept for a long time, not waking up until after dinner.
Smelling the aroma of food, Leng Yue, her hair a mess, entered the kitchen. "Mom, it smells so good! What are you making?"
"You brat, you walk so quietly! You scared me to death!" Leng Yue suddenly spoke up, startling her mother so much that she dropped the spoon into the pot.
"Mom, are you too focused?" Leng Yue was yawning non-stop, how could she not make a sound? "By the way, did Dad go out?"
"Yeah, he ran out right after eating. There's no way he can stay home with these chores anyway." Mrs. Leng turned to look at Leng Yue. "Did you sleep well? I saw you were sleeping so soundly at noon that I didn't dare wake you. I said I'd wake you after I finished cooking, but I didn't expect you to get up by yourself!"
"I was woken up by hunger, wasn't I? Mom's cooking smelled so good that it woke me up from my dream." Leng Yue spared no effort in flattering her.
"You talk too much. Go wash up, and then call your dad and tell him to come home for dinner. Honestly, how old are you? It's mealtime and you still don't know how to come home. Do you think people won't eat?" Mrs. Leng nagged as she turned off the stove.
Leng Yue found it interesting and stood there listening. When her mother saw she wasn't going to wash up, she started nagging again. Leng Yue wasn't angry, and just smiled and went to wash up.
Mrs. Leng was speechless for a moment, feeling that Leng Yue was acting a little strange. While ladling soup, she muttered, "This girl, why is she so happy? Is she still half asleep?"
Leng Yue was truly happy; she was finally back to a normal life and could finally eat properly again.
