Chapter 17: The Eccentric Emperor vs. the Powerful Minister’s Wife (17)

At the command of the scarred man, the robbers behind him rushed out with their swords raised, surrounding the merchant caravan disguised as officers and soldiers.

"Behave yourself! If you know what's good for you, hand over the silver and I'll spare your lives. If you dare to struggle, don't blame me for killing you without blinking an eye!"

The scarred man pointed his knife at everyone with an arrogant attitude.

The officers and soldiers looked at him coldly, without a trace of fear on their faces.

The one-eyed man frowned, feeling that something was wrong, but he didn't think much about it and waved at the robbers.

"Search for me!"

The robbers approached the carriage with ferocious looks. The officers and soldiers guarding the carriage turned around instantly and pulled out the long knives hidden under the straw, and fought with the robbers before they could react!

"superior!"

Zhou Huaiqian, hiding in the dark, waved to the officers and soldiers, and they rushed out instantly!

"Oh no, it's a trick!"

By the time the scarred man and the one-eyed man reacted, it was too late. Zhou Huaiqian quickly led the officers and soldiers to surround them.

The officers and soldiers brought by Zhou Huaiqian were not ordinary officers and soldiers, but soldiers who had fought on the battlefield with him.

In their eyes, these robbers were not even small soldiers or crabs. In just a cup of tea, all the robbers were arrested by them.

Some died, some were injured.

"General, all the people have been captured. Please give your orders!"

Zhou Huaiqian glanced at the robbers who were being restrained by the soldiers behind him and said in a deep voice, "Find out where their hideout is and catch them all in one fell swoop!"

"yes!"

Under the severe torture of the officers and soldiers, the robbers confessed everything after a short while.

Zhou Huaiqian immediately led the officers and soldiers to the robbers' lair, arrested all the robbers, and put them in the Xuzhou County Jail.

After completing his task, Zhou Huaiqian hurried back to the imperial city. The Xuzhou County Magistrate couldn't even find him to thank him.

Zhou Huaiqian galloped all the way and two horses died on the way in his attempt to get back to the imperial city as quickly as possible.

After returning to the imperial city, he did not rush to the palace to report, but went directly back to the general's mansion.

"Tell me everything that happened in the General's Mansion during my absence, in every detail."

The first thing Zhou Huaiqian did when he returned to the general's mansion was to take a hot bath and change his dusty clothes.

"Yes, General."

The butler didn't think much about it and recounted everything that had happened in the past few days.

Zhou Huaiqian leaned against the bathtub, closed his eyes and listened quietly to what had happened in the general's mansion these days, to be precise, what was happening about Jiang Jingyu.

During the days he was in Xuzhou, he couldn't help but think of Jiang Jingyu's face and every little detail of their childhood.

Zhou Huaiqian, who had already had a relationship with his deceased wife, knew very well that he had fallen in love with Jiang Jingyu again.

After confirming his feelings, Zhou Huaiqian thought about Jiang Jingyu every moment in Xuzhou. He wanted to see her, express his feelings to her, and say sorry to her.

He stayed at the place where robbers often appeared, without eating, drinking or sleeping, for a whole day and night, all for the purpose of eliminating the bandits as soon as possible so that he could get back to see the person he missed earlier.

But now he had clearly rushed back to the general's mansion, but he didn't dare to see her. He could only learn about her from other people first.

He had treated her so well before and said such chilling words to her on their wedding night. He was afraid that she would resent him, become alienated from him, and no longer accept his feelings and advances.

Zhou Huaiqian pinched his eyebrows in annoyance, struggling in his heart.

What if Ayu is disappointed in him and becomes disheartened with him because of his previous actions and words, how should he deal with his feelings for her?

"General, the water is cold. Do you want more water?"

After an unknown amount of time, a servant walked in from behind the screen and asked in a low voice.

Zhou Huaiqian murmured, "If you like someone and want to get her, but are afraid that she will reject you, what will you do?"

The servant was stunned and looked around subconsciously. After confirming that he and Zhou Huaiqian were the only ones in the room, he lowered his head again.

The servant thought for a moment and replied, "General, I believe that feelings can be cultivated slowly. As long as you keep the person by your side first, you can think of other solutions later."

Zhou Huaiqian closed his eyes, his expression unwavering: "Stay? How can I keep her? What if she insists on leaving one day?"

The servant subconsciously said, "As long as the matter is settled, we can naturally keep him."

Zhou Huaiqian suddenly opened his eyes, tapping his fingers on the edge of the bucket intermittently, a deep look flashed across his face.

He waved at the servant and whispered twice in his ear.

The servant was stunned at first, then nodded vigorously: "Don't worry, General, I will definitely take care of this matter for you!"

"Well, go ahead. Do it secretly and don't let anyone else know."

"yes!"

That night, dusk fell.

During the day, after Zhou Huaiqian went to the palace to report, he did not return to the general's mansion, but went to the tavern. He drank alone and stayed in the tavern until dusk.

Zhou Huaiqian returned to the general's mansion reeking of alcohol, and his steps seemed unsteady due to his drunkenness.

The guard at the gate of the general's mansion saw him and hurried forward to support him: "General, be careful with your step!"

"Go away, I'm not drunk, I'm not drunk."

Zhou Huaiqian brushed the two of them away and staggered into the mansion.

The two guards looked at each other, hesitating whether to follow, when a servant ran out of the mansion.

"General, General, why are you drinking?"

The servant hurriedly supported Zhou Huaiqian's arm and put it on his neck, then helped Zhou Huaiqian walk into the mansion.

The servant carried Zhou Huaiqian to the mansion. He looked around cautiously. Seeing that no one was around, he whispered, "General, everything is done."
