"Qingyan, you were so cute when you were little," Rong Qing praised.
In the photos, Lu Qingyan is mostly wearing a pink tutu, looking like a little princess.
However, although those eyes were as innocent as any other child's, they also held a different kind of sorrow. That sorrow seemed to emanate from the very depths of the soul, making one want to pity them.
"Are there any smaller photos left?" Rong Qing asked.
Their relationship, from the beginning until now, has basically consisted of knowing the present, fantasizing about the future, and rarely mentioning the past.
Looking at these photos now, Rong Qing was suddenly filled with doubt: Qingyan had never mentioned her parents to him, only that she had an uncle. Were her parents deceased?
Lu Qingyan briefly explained her identity, not intentionally trying to gain his sympathy.
Rong Qing rubbed his chin against Lu Qingyan's forehead: "Qingyan, you are very brave."
"Is that so?" Lu Qingyan asked in return.
"Of course, if you had never thought about escaping from there, you might still be trapped there alone, with no one knowing you exist, and you would be kept like a pet." Rong Qing had encountered countless dark realities before, so he wasn't particularly surprised.
He simply felt sorry for the hardships Lu Qingyan had endured. But he wouldn't bring them up; he would only treat her even better in the future.
“Yes, I also think that was the best thing I ever did, and then I met Uncle and you, Rong Qing. I’m very lucky.” Lu Qingyan looked at Rong Qing with her eyes crinkling, feeling that his slightly blue eyes were shining with a different kind of light.
The two lingered for a while longer, and before they knew it, it was time for Rong Xu to return. Lu Qingyan watched as the hour and minute hands of the living room clock turned ninety degrees, and her heart tightened instantly.
"Why are you so nervous?" Although Rong Qing was talking about Lu Qingyan, he was also a little nervous, and his palms were sweaty as he held Lu Qingyan's hand.
"Aren't you nervous?" Lu Qingyan rolled her eyes at him.
"Of course I'm nervous too. I don't know if I can pass your uncle's test and bring you home. I heard that fathers-in-law in Xia Kingdom especially like to make things difficult for their sons-in-law." Warm breath fell on Lu Qingyan's ear, making her face flush. She took a step back and glared at Rong Qing.
Rong Xu is always punctual. He said he would be back around 3 p.m., and sure enough, he returned 15 minutes later.
He first looked at Lu Qingyan, then breathed a sigh of relief and said, "It's good that you're back." He didn't mention his mistakes or say anything apologetic.
However, when he saw Rong Qing behind Lu Qingyan, he realized that things were going wrong.
Rong Xu said to him, "Uncle."
Lu Qingyan: "!--!"
In an instant, lightning flashed and thunder roared, as if a bolt of lightning had struck Lu Qingyan's head. He stared blankly between the two people, his mind still reeling.
She asked Rong Xu blankly, "Uncle Rong, what do you call him?"
Rong Qing took a step forward, put his arm around Lu Qingyan, and made her look at him.
Rong Qing smiled and said, "So it's you."
"Uncle, it's been a long time," Rong Xu said with a complicated expression.
Whether he is willing to acknowledge this person or not, this person's seniority is always higher than his own, and they are blood relatives—this is an undeniable fact.
"It's been a long time." Rong Qing gently patted Lu Qingyan's back and said to Rong Xu, "This is your aunt."
