"Oh, he's here." Granny Ma responded from inside. She had thought it was someone Lu Qingyan knew, but it turned out to be her distant nephew.
She stared blankly at the figure in military uniform before her, tears streaming down her face without her realizing it. So alike, so incredibly alike. Actually, there were quite a few differences in their appearances, but seeing Rong Qing in his uniform unconsciously reminded her of her husband who had died in battle.
"Auntie," Rong Qing called out.
"Good boy, you've come back." Grandma Ma looked at Rong Qing and warmly held his hand, unwilling to let go. "I remember the last time I saw you, you were so small. You've grown so much since you came back. How is your family?"
The situation outside is still quite chaotic. Grandma Ma doesn't know many characters, and there aren't many educated people in this village, except for those living in the cowsheds.
She dares not ask those people to write letters now.
"Don't worry, Auntie, our family is doing well."
"No missions lately, have you?" Grandma Ma sighed. "Back when your great-uncle was in the army, he was always busy with missions and wouldn't let me write to him."
"Wait here, I'll go in and get you your food," Grandma Ma said as she went into the kitchen.
Once the food was served, Granny Ma started chatting with Rong Qing again: "I'm afraid you didn't come here just to see this old woman."
"Aunt, I did come here on a mission."
Grandma Ma was old but insightful: "Is your task related to those people in the cowshed?" As she spoke, she glanced at Lu Qingyan, afraid that Lu Qingyan might not be able to keep it to herself and would tell others.
However, she considered this girl one of her own and didn't want them to become estranged.
Rong Qing nodded.
Grandma Ma didn't ask any further questions. Instead, she muttered, "Our village is a little better off. We give those people fewer work points and less food out of politeness, but we still secretly help them out. A few people went in from outside, and there are still a few left. Are you here to take them away?"
"No, it's because we received a message from above saying that they will be exonerated soon."
"Really? That would be wonderful." The old lady didn't understand much else, but she knew how painful it was for someone to be away from home and unable to return.
After dinner, the old lady called Lu Qingyan to the kitchen and asked her while washing the pots, "Girl, would you like to find a boyfriend in our village?"
"Mother-in-law, why did you suddenly bring this up?" Lu Qingyan's face flushed as she thought of Rong Qing.
"I don't know many girls, but among them, you are the most diligent and capable. I also want to become family with you. I am all alone and have no grandchildren of my own. Now that my distant nephew has come, I want to ask you, have you taken a liking to him?" Old Mrs. Ma's voice was not loud, and she was not embarrassed at all when she said this.
These days, blind dates are all about efficiency. Just like taking down an enemy, you have to be quick, accurate, and ruthless. First impressions are very important.
“This brother is very good,” Lu Qingyan said. Rong Qing was the best person in her heart, and no one could compare to him.
"And what about you? Are you willing or not?" Grandma Ma pressed.
"I—" Lu Qing was about to say yes when she suddenly remembered something and asked, "Mother-in-law, this isn't something that can be done just because I'm the only one who's willing."
