"Your Majesty, please speak your mind. There's no need for us to reminisce about the past." Looking at her beautiful face, Yu Guijun said with a somber expression, "What kind of person are you? After all these years together, do you think I don't know?"
Ren Junhe looked at Yu Guijun for a long time before revealing his purpose: "Back then, I thought highly of Yan'er and entrusted her with the military tally. But after her accident, I searched for a long time but couldn't find it. Do you know where it is?"
"A military tally?" Yu Guijun was stunned for a moment, seemingly shocked by the news.
It's no wonder he was so alarmed; such important matters are not easily found out by outsiders. Besides, he trusted his son so much that he wouldn't bother to investigate.
From beginning to end, he never imagined that something so important would end up in his daughter's hands.
Seeing his reaction, Ren Junhe felt uneasy and said, "You are her biological father. Would she really hide such a big thing from you?"
"A daughter is no longer under her father's control once she grows up, and with you, the Empress, around, how many days can I be close to her? Now that something has happened, you're blaming me."
Ren Junhe stammered, "Can't you really remember even the slightest hint?"
Yu Guijun stood up and laughed loudly: "Yes, I just can't remember anything. What do you want to do? Are you going to search me because you don't believe me, or are you going to torture me to extract a confession?"
"Yu'er, you're overthinking it. There's still some past affection between us, I won't lay a hand on you." Ren Junhe sighed and left with his hands behind his back.
Behind him came the curses of Yu Guijun: "Ren Junhe, I knew you would end up with nothing. You can't take care of your husband or protect your daughter, you deserve to be the ruler of a fallen kingdom!"
Ren Junhe paused, clenched his fist, and a stream of blood flowed out from between his fingers.
She has important matters to attend to and doesn't want to bother with this foolish woman.
Ren Junhe's second destination was the East Palace, Lu Qingyan's residence.
Lu Qingyan knew perfectly well the relationship between Ren Fengliu and Ren Junhe. She was also fully aware of the current situation in the court and at the front lines. Normally, seeing Ren Junhe in this place would have surprised her, but now she had a feeling that she hadn't expected it.
"Flirtatious," Ren Junhe called her name first.
Lu Qingyan also stood up and respectfully returned the greeting: "Mother Empress."
"I remember the last time this Eastern Palace underwent major repairs was when my late mother was alive. Many years have passed in the blink of an eye, and this is the first time I have come here." Ren Junhe looked at every plant and tree in the Eastern Palace and sighed.
Lu Qingyan nodded: "When my grandmother was still alive, she was indeed very good to me."
"Yes, it is excellent. Otherwise, we would not have gone against the majority opinion to make you the Crown Princess."
Even now, the mention of this matter still leaves Ren Junhe with a bitter taste in her mouth. Come to think of it carefully, she, as a mother, had never received a single word of praise from the late emperor.
Lu Qingyan smiled shyly: "It's all thanks to the Empress Dowager's high regard for me. I feel ashamed and dare not take credit for it."
Ren Junhe's face stiffened, and as he spoke, he finally got to the point: "If you calculate it, you're almost twenty-four or twenty-five now. When other people's daughters are your age, they already have three husbands and four wives, they've established their families, and it's time to start their careers."
Lu Qingyan listened carefully, not in a hurry to interrupt.
Ren Junhe continued, "You are still young, while I, the Empress Dowager, am already old. So I have come here today to discuss the matter of succession with you."
