At this stage, the conflict is not yet intense, and the evil is still hidden in unseen places.
On the way north out of the city, several cars moved slowly. However, apart from the occasional need to clear vehicles blocked by zombies, the journey was relatively smooth. Robberies and the like no longer occurred in areas with many people and cars.
After a journey of many stops, it was already dusk when Lu Qingyan and her group finally reached the vicinity of the capital. The ground along the way was covered in human blood and the mangled bodies of zombies; after a month in the apocalypse, many buildings were abandoned.
Along the way, Sun Zhuo frequently tried to get Lu Qingyan and the others to take the highway, saying that it would be faster and they could get to the capital sooner, but Lu Qingyan and Pan Qingbai refused.
Things are different now. Highways are great, with smooth traffic flow. Compared to the dangers of traffic jams and collisions, driving slowly on ordinary roads is much safer.
The closer they got to the capital, the more vehicles there were, but their speeds seemed to have increased considerably. Lu Qingyan and her group sped up, and as darkness fell, they could see the outline of a roadside gas station standing in the night.
"Battalion Commander, there's a gas station over there. Let's go fill up the car," Zhang Bao said, squinting.
"Well, it's getting dark, let's spend the night here. Zhang Bao, go and collect more oil to take back to the base," Pan Qingbai said.
"Why, why!" Sun Zhuo was the first to object. "Don't think I don't know the way. We're almost at the capital. What do you mean by stopping here?"
"Didn't I just say we should take more oil from here?" Pan Qingbai glanced at him lazily, already somewhat annoyed with the man.
Lu Qingyan laughed and said, "Sun Zhuo, are you a firecracker? How come you light so easily?"
"I invited you back, and this is how you treat me?" Sun Zhuo said indignantly, making an outrageous demand: "If you want this zombie vaccine, you should treat us like experts, not like this. Did you invite me back just to restrict my freedom?"
Upon hearing his remarks, Lu Qingyan chuckled: "Sun Zhuo, I remember Sun Yue is Dr. Mo's right-hand man. If all of this we've prepared is to suit someone's choice, then Sun Yue should be the first to speak. Why are you in such a hurry?"
Upon hearing Lu Qingyan expose his past, Sun Zhuo blushed and said, "I... Sun Yue and I are such good friends, I just said what he wanted to say."
"Heh," Lu Qingyan sneered, "You're making it sound like he doesn't have a mouth, that he needs your golden mouth to express what he wants to say?"
"Sun Yue," Lu Qingyan called out, and Sun Yue heard her: "You heard what Sun Zhuo and I said, so what are your thoughts?"
Sun Yue didn't want to cause any trouble at this crucial moment: "We're almost at the capital, so a little longer won't make a difference. We've traveled for so long, and everyone is tired. We should get some rest."
Sun Zhuo glared at Sun Yue, showing no dissatisfaction with his explanation, but he eventually quieted down.
A cool breeze was blowing at night. Lu Qingyan looked up at the bright stars in the sky, with Pan Qingbai sitting beside her.
"Xiao Ran, what are you looking at?" Pan Qingbai asked. She had been staring at him for a long time. He, too, had been silently watching her for a long time.
