Chapter 33: A Novel Set in the Republican Era - Male Second Lead: Educated Youth vs. Beautiful and Arrogant Village Flower (33shuhaige.net)

Mother Shen always doted on her youngest son, and smiled gently at him. "Mom has just figured some things out. Xiao He, you also think I should listen to your father before eating."

Shen He had a vague feeling that something was wrong with his mother, but he still mumbled, "Maybe Dad has something urgent to attend to?"

After hearing this, Mrs. Shen put down her chopsticks and took out a handkerchief to wipe her mouth. "I also have something urgent to say." Then she stood up and looked Mr. Shen in the eye.

"What could you possibly want? I think you're just trying to make me miserable." Father Shen was truly enraged this time, and he was practically shouting as he spoke.

Mother Shen blinked indifferently, "I want a divorce." Her tone was even calm.

But it struck everyone like a thunderclap.

The usually composed Brother Shen lost his balance and fell to the ground with a thud. "Mom, what happened to you?"

Grandpa Shen, also stunned, slapped Shen's father on the back. "You brat, what have you done to wrong Xiaoyun?"

He then turned to Chen's mother and said, "Xiaoyun, just tell me what grievances you've suffered, and I'll get justice for you."

"I haven't been wronged because I've figured things out. We'll get the paperwork done after the New Year." Mother Shen's tone was as indifferent as if she were asking what to eat for breakfast the next morning.

Mr. Shen was also caught off guard. "Are you crazy? You want to divorce me? What are you doing at your age?"

Noticing the way he looked at her as if she were crazy, Shen's mother still nodded. "Shen Jingang, I, Wang Yun, am determined to divorce you."

Mother Shen's firmness made Father Shen a little uneasy, and it took him a while before he finally remembered to ask the reason.

"Why? We're doing just fine here, and I haven't been out drinking, gambling, or whoring."

"Because you've always suppressed me!" Mother Shen's tone was no longer indifferent; her hands clenched tightly as she finally shouted these words.

Mr. Shen still looked confused. "I suppressed you?"

Seeing his expression, Chen's mother found it amusing, and without further explanation, turned and went back into the house, locking the door behind her.

Shen's father sat there dumbfounded, while the others looked at each other in surprise.

Chen Shi was excited and wanted to go downstairs to set off firecrackers, but his mother, who was nearly fifty, finally understood.

This commotion dampened everyone's spirits, and the meal ended up being a quiet and unpleasant affair.

That night, Song Jiajia nestled against Shen Shi's chest and asked, "Are Mom and Dad really getting a divorce?"

Song Jiajia spoke almost in a breathy voice, her breath hitting Shen Shi's chest and tickling his heart.

After calming down for a few seconds, he said, "They'll probably leave."

"Why get a divorce if there's no conflict?" Almost no one in the village gets divorced, and people just laugh when they hear that someone's daughter is getting divorced.

Song Jiajia was somewhat affected and believed that divorce was a bad thing, but that life could still be made do if there were no major problems.

Shen Shi understood, but explained, "Because you can be happier after a divorce. Everyone should pursue what they want and not care about other people's opinions."

Song Jiajia nodded, thinking that what Shen Shi said made a lot of sense. "Then I will be like that in the future, and I won't care what others think."

Hearing the girl speak sweetly, Shen Shi couldn't help but lean down and kiss her. "I'll support you in whatever you do, except for wanting to change your husband."

Song Jiajia felt a warm glow in her heart and snuggled closer to him, saying, "My husband is so good to me, I wouldn't trade him for a thousand pieces of gold."

Her voice was sweet, and it sounded like she was being coquettish.

Chen suddenly pressed down on him, exclaiming, "My darling." He then started taking off his clothes, and the two began to play around again.

Next up is the first day of the Lunar New Year. In order to let everyone have a good New Year, Shen's mother did not mention the divorce.

The family had a lively time together, and no one knows what they were really thinking, but on the surface, they all maintained a harmonious atmosphere.

Even the usually dramatic Shen father was unusually quiet.

Several days passed with each person preoccupied with their own thoughts, but there was no further news from Shen's mother, as if she had forgotten about the matter.

Seeing this, Shen's father got cocky again, and even Shen Shi couldn't help but wonder if his mother was just joking when she said those words the other day.

On the evening of the tenth day of the Lunar New Year, Chen's mother prepared a large table of dishes. As soon as Chen He sat down, he exclaimed in surprise, "Mom, what good thing happened today? This is even better than what we ate on the first day of the Lunar New Year!"

"Your second brother is leaving tomorrow, so make some good food to send them off." Mother Shen said, and then called to Shen Shi, "Hurry up and eat more seafood, it's a rare treat and not easy to buy."

"Okay, you should eat more too." Shen Shi ate one himself, and then put some on his mother's and his wife's plates as well.

After these few days of adjustment, regardless of whether his mother has really come to her senses, at least it's not as awkward as before.

The point of life is to be happy.

Seeing the harmonious atmosphere between Shen Shi and his mother, Shen He was a little unhappy. His mother had always doted on him, her youngest son, but now she wasn't as kind to him as before.

Once the boy's stubbornness kicked in, Shen He said indignantly, "If Second Brother is leaving, then make more dishes. Mom, you're being too biased!"

"Hmm, I'm biased?" Chen's mother looked at Chen He and asked, "Your second brother rarely comes back, and if I cook a few more dishes, is that biased? When I give you more pocket money, why don't you say I'm biased?"

"That's different!" He's the most pampered child in the family, how can you compare him to my second brother?

The impetuous young man retorted loudly.

“We were born to the same parents, what’s the difference?” Mother Shen said, looking at her beloved youngest son.

"Mom...how could you..." Shen He was on the verge of tears, wanting to argue a few more times, but her father interrupted her, "That's enough."
