Chapter 773 The Widow (5)

Aunt Chu slowly patted her newly made dress and stood up.

Mother Liu said angrily, "Aunt Chu, you have no manners at all!"

"Would you please take a look, Aunt Liu? Besides you, is there anyone else in this house who belongs to the Madam?"

All the maids in the room lowered their heads, as if they had become deaf, ignoring Aunt Chu's clamor.

Aunt Chu, clutching her handkerchief, smiled slightly, her eyes gleaming: "I've already heard from the doctor that Madam doesn't have many years left to live. Your only widowed sister is in the Northwest, with only one daughter left. Doesn't she need me to take care of her?"

"If you continue to be so ungrateful, I'm afraid you won't even make it through this year."

Aunt Chu's voice was slow and deliberate, yet tinged with coldness.

A cough suddenly came from outside.

Aunt Chu knelt down again in the blink of an eye, tears streaming down her face: "Madam, please spare me! I only want to live a peaceful life with Xin'er, and I have no intention of fighting for her!"

Wei Wenxuan rushed over and happened to see Aunt Chu kowtowing to Jiang Yu. He pulled her up and vented his anger on her: "Can't you just behave yourself! Jiang Yu, look at yourself, do you still look the same as before! You wicked woman!"

Jiang Yu stared at Wei Wenxuan for a long while, then forced a weak smile: "You said I'm not the same as before, but what about you? Are you still the same as before?"

As she watched him silently, Wei Wenxuan felt a pang of pain in his heart, but he turned his head away and instructed the others, "From now on, Madam should rest quietly, and no one is allowed to come to see her!"

Then he led Aunt Chu out the door.

Aunt Chu smiled at Jiang Yu before she left.

After Wei Wenxuan left with Aunt Chu, Jiang Yu suddenly spoke up: "Aunt Liu, do you think he still remembers that today is my birthday? He said that he would spend every birthday with me after we got married."

Liu's mother kept wiping away her tears: "Girl, you must pull yourself together. Your daughter is still a child."

Jiang Yu had already met with Wei Jinxiu during the day.

She felt relieved that her daughter was much more mature than before.

But she couldn't bear to stay in this mansion for even a day longer.

Every time she thought about how she still had to endure this, watching Wei Wenxuan constantly bring new brides into the house, laughing and joking with other women, and having many children, while she could only sit in the position of the principal wife, like a piece of wood, waiting for people to serve her tea.

She just wanted to die right then and there.

Even though men and women can divorce nowadays, Jiang Yu has nowhere to go.

Her father died early, and her older sister lived far away in the Northwest. She didn't even have a maternal clan, and she couldn't find anyone to support her.

Moreover, she only wanted to die because she was hurt by Wei Wenxuan, so how could she have thought of anything else?

Silently apologizing to Wei Jinxiu in her heart, Jiang Yu then asked the others to leave, saying that she needed to rest.

Liu's mother, unsuspecting, said many more words before leaving.

After everyone had left, Jiang Yu struggled to her feet.

It is not a simple matter for a seriously ill person to commit suicide.

If Jiang Yu didn't truly not want to live, she probably wouldn't even have the strength to die.

She painstakingly tied a knot in the rope and then called Liu's mother in.

“Tell the master that today is my birthday. He promised me that he would spend it with me every year. This year, I want him to keep his promise.”

Liu Mama hesitated, but seeing Jiang Yu's determination, she could only curtsy and reply, "This old servant will go right away."

After Liu's mother closed the door, Jiang Yu sat quietly for a moment, recalling her more than twenty years, and finally raised her foot, intending to step on the stool.

Just then, Liu's mother's overjoyed voice came from outside—

"Young lady, young lady, Madam Jinrong has come to see you! Your sister has returned from the Northwest!"
