Chapter 249 An Unnoticed Passerby in a Historical Novel (19)

After Xu Nian's heart-to-heart talk and reassurance, Shen Chaoxi behaved himself for a while.

However, she soon relapsed, becoming so clingy that Xu Nian's eyes twitched.

He wants to go with her to work.

He needs to take her with him to work.

Even when she goes to the toilet, you have to wait outside the door and chat with her every now and then to make sure she's still there.

Needless to say, they always shower together.

Xu Nian's blushing and embarrassing bathing experiences have honed her thin skin into the impassive person she is today.

The two of them are inseparable, 24/7; he's everywhere.

Seeing Xu Nian's helpless yet indulgent expression, Shen Chaoxi smiled subtly.

He had long since discovered that whenever he "had an episode," Niannian would be incredibly tolerant of him, and no matter what he did, she would grant his wish.

If that's the case, then I might as well be a patient.

Today was another day I fell ill!

Shen Chaoxi was calculating in his mind, and Xu Nian was truly at a loss for words, neither angry nor willing to speak to him.

He's only bothering her like this because he's bored.

After careful consideration, Xu Nian approached Shen Chaoxi and suggested, "Shen Chaoxi, let's adopt a child?"

"Adopt a child?" Shen Chaoxi looked at Xu Nian in confusion, not understanding why she would suddenly have such a thought.

Could it be that Niannian regrets it?

She wanted a child, but he had surgery and couldn't have children, so she thought about adopting one.

Thinking of this, Shen Chaoxi's expression became visibly sad.

He had only considered that he didn't want to lose her and didn't want a child to disrupt their lives, but he never considered her true feelings.

He is the one who made Niannian lose the possibility of becoming a mother.

Xu Nian saw Shen Chaoxi's expression change drastically, sometimes blaming herself, sometimes feeling sad, and sometimes regretting.

Realizing she had made a request she shouldn't have, Xu Nian was instantly filled with regret.

He is the male lead in the story, and he could have been a father if he hadn't chosen her.

But now it's impossible!

She even wants him to adopt a child. Isn't that like stabbing him in the heart?

"Shen Chaoxi, I'm sorry, it was my oversight. I won't say it again!" Xu Nian said with a face full of guilt.

“Niannian doesn’t need to apologize to me.” Shen Chaoxi shook his head, looked at the woman whose appearance remained unchanged, felt a moment of melancholy, but still decided to grant Xu Nian’s suggestion.

"Niannian, do you really like children?" Shen Chaoxi wanted to know if she genuinely liked children or if it was just a sudden whim to have one.

"I quite like him. Do you like him too?" Xu Nian also wanted to know if he had ever regretted it.

“Since Niannian likes it, let’s adopt a child.” Shen Chaoxi made the decision, his handsome face shining brightly at that moment.

Because he loves Xu Nian, he is willing to accept a child with whom he has no relation whatsoever, simply because Xu Nian likes him.

“Shen Chaoxi, raising a child isn’t something I can do just because I like it. What about your wishes?” Xu Nian pulled Shen Chaoxi’s face towards her, making him look into her eyes and tell her the answer.

“Niannian’s wish is my wish.” Shen Chaoxi blinked, not understanding what Xu Nian was struggling with!

"Forget it, let's put the adoption on hold!" Xu Nian could tell that Shen Chaoxi was unwilling; he only agreed because of her.

He respected her ideas, so he agreed with them, but forgot his own ideas.

Moreover, adopting a child requires a sense of responsibility.

Shen Chaoxi needs to have the responsibility of being a father.

She needs to have a sense of responsibility as a mother.

Xu Nian didn't know if she could be a good mother.

Raising a child is not like raising a pet. You can just feed and care for a pet.

Raising children requires proper upbringing, teaching them how to be good people, instilling common sense and values, and showing them how to be a decent human being.

Xu Nian felt she couldn't do it; she hadn't even figured out how to be a decent person.

When Shen Chaoxi saw Xu Nian suddenly change her mind, she was surprised, but after a moment's thought, she understood the problem.

He held Xu Nian's hand and chuckled, "Niannian, sometimes worrying too much will prevent you from getting anything done. If you want to do something, just do it, understand?"

After some persuasion from Shen Chaoxi, Xu Nian arrived at the orphanage gate with a heavy heart.

With Shen Chaoxi's encouraging gaze, the two walked side by side into the orphanage.

Knowing that the couple was coming, the orphanage director specially brought several orphanage teachers to greet them.

The children were playing, and the dean and several teachers took Xu Nian and Shen Chaoxi to see them.

After walking around, Xu Nian didn't see any children that particularly caught her eye, so she asked the director if all the children were there.

"There are a few children who are rather withdrawn and haven't come out to play. Would you two like to go and take a look?" the director said, rubbing his hands together with a broad smile.

Shen Chaoxi turned his gaze to Xu Nian, letting her make all the decisions.

Xu Nian nodded: "Then let's go take a look."

Led by the dean and teachers, Xu Nian and Shen Chaoxi arrived at the classroom where the orphans were studying.

There were indeed three children, around six or seven years old, in the classroom at that time.

The only little girl was drawing on her desk.

A little boy is intently building with blocks.

There was also a little boy engrossed in a story from a comic book.

Xu Nian was very interested in the little girl's paintings, so she went into the classroom and stood behind the little girl to look at them.

It was discovered that her painting depicted an orphanage, with each child in the painting wearing a happy smile under the protection of the director and teachers.

They are running, playing, and growing towards the sun.

The little girl's drawing of the figures is childish, but the meaning she wants to express is clear and understandable.

Xu Nian nodded in agreement. Just when everyone thought she would choose to adopt the little girl, she walked over to the little boy who was building blocks.

The little boy barely dared to breathe as he carefully placed the last block on top.

The little boy smiled knowingly as the artwork was completed.

Instead of cheering, he reached out and pulled the main building blocks out one by one.

The once indestructible building blocks began to wobble, and when the little boy removed the last main block, the entire building collapsed with a "crack".

The building blocks fell all over the floor, but the little boy didn't cry; he just frowned in confusion.

He didn't seem to understand why the block shelf would collapse without any support!

Shen Chaoxi looked at the little boy several times with surprise. When he met Xu Nian's probing gaze, he smiled but didn't say anything.

The two approached the boy who was reading a comic book. The book was ordinary, just a regular comic book, but the little boy was engrossed in it, completely ignoring the people around him.

After looking at the last child, Xu Nian pulled Shen Chaoxi out of the classroom.

Under the tense yet expectant gazes of the dean and a group of teachers, Xu Nian slowly spoke up: "My husband and I need to discuss this."

"Take your time to discuss it, there's no rush," the director said with a smile, waving his hand. Although he said there was no rush, he actually hoped that the children could be adopted by the couple.
