When Yuanbao and the little white fox saw someone coming to rescue Xu Nian, they exchanged a glance, each looking at the other with disdain, and then tacitly stopped fighting.
The little white fox squatted down to Xu Nian's left, while Yuanbao squatted down to Xu Nian's right.
The woman saw them squatting obediently and sensibly to the side and glanced at them curiously.
Because Xu Nian's clothing and attire were essential for a Taoist priest, the women did not drive them away.
After waiting for a while, four or five people came out of the village: four men of different ages and a girl.
Four men carried carrying poles and ropes, while the girl carried her medicine box on her back, her pretty face filled with worry and anxiety.
The five people arrived at the place where Xu Nian had fainted, and the four men turned their backs to her first.
After examining Xu Nian's injuries, Yin Mengmeng confirmed that there were no fatal wounds and that he had fainted due to excessive blood loss. She quickly stopped the bleeding and asked several people to help carry him back to the village.
Xu Nian was rescued, and Yuanbao and the little white fox immediately followed and stayed close by her side.
"It's strange that this fox and pig aren't afraid of people!" said the youngest youth.
"Don't talk nonsense. This girl's attire clearly indicates she comes from some Taoist temple. Do you think the things she's with are ordinary?"
"Judging from how intelligent they seem, they can probably understand what we're saying," the eldest middle-aged man said warily, looking at Yuanbao and the little white fox.
"Goodness, Brother Dashan, do you mean these two are the female Taoist priest's demonic pets?" The young man had barely finished speaking when he was glared at fiercely by his companions.
At this point, the young man covered his mouth with one hand, and seeing that neither the little white fox nor the piglet was looking at him, he secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
The villagers were very superstitious about demons and ghosts, let alone discussing them in front of real demons.
The four carried Xu Nian to Yin Mengmeng's temporary residence, exchanged a few pleasantries, and then went their separate ways home.
Even the couple who discovered Xu Nian walked very fast, as if they were afraid that something would catch up with them.
Seeing that everyone was leaving in such a hurry, Yin Mengmeng didn't try to stop them. She went to the kitchen, fetched a basin of hot water, and helped Xu Nian clean and bandage her wounds again.
While the wound was being bandaged, Yuanbao pushed the little white fox out the door.
This time, the little white fox didn't resist and obediently let herself be pushed out the door.
It may have impure intentions, but it's not worse than a beast.
After bandaging Xu Nian's wound, Yin Mengmeng went to the kitchen to cook the medicine herself.
In a daze, Xu Nian opened her eyes and immediately smelled the strong scent of herbs.
Xu Nian lay motionless on the bed. The surroundings and smells told her that she had gotten what she wanted.
"Yuanbao?" Xu Nian tilted her head, not seeing any trace of Yuanbao and the little white fox in the room, and felt a little worried.
"Host, you're awake?" Yuanbao heard Xu Nian's call and immediately ran in from the courtyard, with the little white fox following behind.
Beside the bed, the two little ones looked at her with bright eyes.
"Host, you're too hard on yourself! You've lost so much blood that you're practically fainting just so Yin Mengmeng can save you!" Yuanbao complained with concern.
"Yin Mengmeng is a doctor. She can tell whether I'm fainting or not just by taking my pulse. Rather than pretending to faint and being found out, I'd rather be real," Xu Nian thought calmly to herself.
"Host, I didn't realize you could be so ruthless to yourself before!" Yuanbao exclaimed in surprise. It had seen how lazy its host had been before.
She almost always takes advantage of the male lead, and even when she can't, she still uses him.
"Huh? I wasn't this ruthless to myself before?" Xu Nian was taken aback, her gaze falling on the little white fox, her thoughts drifting.
"Yes! Before, the host would lie down whenever he could sit, and would never put in any extra effort." Yuanbao immediately covered his mouth with his paw after he misspoke.
Oh no, it forgot that the host has no previous memories. Its casual mention of past events is not a good thing for her.
“Yuanbao, I may be lazy, but I’m not stupid. If there are people I can rely on, I should make the most of them.”
"As for now, you've seen it yourself. Can I still rely on it? Otherwise, I'd be a dried-up corpse!" Xu Nian glanced at the little white fox on the ground, her eyes filled with a hazy mist that obscured her truest thoughts.
Perhaps, this time it's her turn to protect him.
"Host, you've really suffered," Yuanbao said with concern.
"..." Xu Nian's lips twitched. Why did these words sound so strange coming from Yuanbao's mouth?
The little white fox stopped wagging its big tail and its eyes scanned back and forth between Xu Nian and Yuan Bao.
Although neither of them spoke, it sensed that she and the little fat pig were communicating in a way it didn't understand.
Just as the little white fox was deep in thought, someone came in from outside.
"You're awake. How are you feeling? Is there anything that's bothering you?" Yin Mengmeng asked gently and kindly, holding the bowl of medicine.
"I'm alright. I am Xu Nian, a Taoist priest from Baiyun Temple who came down the mountain for training. Thank you for saving my life, young lady!" Xu Nian struggled to get up and express his gratitude.
Seeing this, Yin Mengmeng put the medicine bowl aside and said to stop her, "Don't move around, your wound will reopen."
"Let me tell you, the wound medicine I used on you is very expensive. Every little bit used is precious, so don't waste this money!" Yin Mengmeng looked at Xu Nian with a pained expression.
Xu Nian was taken aback by her greed; it was as if she saw another version of herself in her.
"How did you get these injuries? So many scratches, some places the skin and flesh have been torn off!" Even without experiencing it firsthand, Yin Mengmeng knew that Xu Nian's injuries were very painful.
"I got into a fight with some things, and I was outnumbered, so this is what happened." Xu Nian smiled bitterly, playing the victim at the opportune moment.
