Feng Guang remained silent for a long time, unsure how to respond. Although she had hoped Xie Zhan could become closer to her, the fact that things had inexplicably come to this point made her feel... well, it felt rather strange.
Xie Zhan patted her head and laughed, "Why isn't Feng Guang saying anything?"
"What should I say..."
"From my perspective, of course I would like to hear Feng Guang say a good word."
Feng Guang blinked, unsure whether he was joking gently like before or serious, but either way, answering "okay" would be fine. She nodded and said, "Okay."
Xie Zhan smiled, took her hand, and placed the white jade hairpin in her palm. "A woman needs a hairpin when she comes of age. When you reach your coming-of-age ceremony, how about using the white jade hairpin that your third uncle gave you?"
"Okay." She answered again, looking down at the hairpin Xie Zhan had given her, wondering to herself how he could have thought of things three years from now?
"Come on, let's go to the hall for dinner." Xie Zhan took her hand and led her to the dining hall with a smile.
The rest of the Xie family had been waiting for quite some time. The old lady and the others didn't say much, but Xie Xun said with dissatisfaction, "Fengguang, why are you only arriving now? Don't you know everyone is waiting for you?"
"I……"
Just as Feng Guang was about to apologize, Xie Zhan said apologetically, "I pulled Feng Guang aside and talked to him for a while, which is why we were so slow. If you want to blame someone, then blame me."
"Third brother, you're spoiling this girl too much." Xie Xun thought Xie Zhan was making excuses for Feng Guang. He shook his head and said, "Feng Guang's temperament wasn't good to begin with. Now that you're spoiling her so much, I'm afraid she'll cause a lot of trouble because of her spoiled princess temper when she gets married."
“Since you’re worried, brother, then let Fengguang stay in the Xie family.” Xie Zhan’s relaxed smile was as if he were talking in jest. He took Fengguang to sit down and then said to Xie Xun, “With Fengguang in the Xie family, no one will dare to bully her.”
"Third brother, please stop joking." Xie Xun shook his head and chuckled. "Raising Fengguang has been a headache for me for the past ten years or so. If I have to keep it for the rest of my life, then my life will truly be tragic."
Feng Guang could tell her father was joking, but she still snorted, "Father, if you don't want to raise me, Third Uncle is willing to."
“That’s right.” Xie Zhan smiled with narrowed eyes, “Feng Guang is a very lovable person. If you don’t want to raise her anymore, then give her to me.”
Xie Jie, on the other side, said, "Third Uncle, will you take care of me too?"
Xie Zhao was displeased. "Jie'er."
Xie Zhan shook his head, "I can't raise Jie'er. After all, taking care of a little Fengguang would take all my energy."
Feng Guang pursed his lips but didn't say anything.
The old lady and Tan Rou exchanged a glance and remained silent for a moment. After a while, the old lady said, "The food is getting cold. Let's talk after we finish eating. Let's eat first."
This banter finally ended with the old lady's words.
After the meal, the elders chatted for a while as usual. The old lady pulled Xie Zhan aside again to talk about his marriage. Not only the old lady, but Xie Xun and Xie Zhao also joined in the fun. Tan Rou was even more enthusiastic, and she even prepared portraits of the women, just waiting for Xie Zhan to choose one.
Xie Zhan was helpless, while Zhao Wan held Huan'er and Xie Jie and watched the commotion from the side.
Feng Guang expressed her sympathy for Xie Zhan's plight, then waved and went back to her room to rest.
