Feng Guang thought of that gentle Empress and felt a little sorry for her. She was now the Empress, the most powerful woman in the harem, second only to the Emperor. But three years later, she would be a deposed Empress, imprisoned in the Cold Palace.
Feng Guang could only sigh. She had only met the Empress twice and their relationship was not deep. She would not risk her life to secure the Empress's position.
As she pondered these things, Feng Guang became sleepy and fell asleep in Xie Zhan's arms.
The carriage, which had only traveled a short distance, stopped again. The faint sound of a woman crying could be heard. Xie Zhan asked, "What happened?"
"Third Master, there's a woman ahead who's about to be sold to a brothel by her father. She's kneeling and begging for help." The coachman's voice was already used to it. He had been driving for Xie Zhan for so many years, and he would almost always encounter this kind of scene every time he went out. His master would only have one reaction: to help if he could.
But today is an exception.
Xie Zhan said coldly, "If that person doesn't want to leave, then let him stay. Just run the car over him."
"Third...Third Master?" The coachman wondered if he had misheard.
Xie Zhan's laughter rang out, "How about that? Can't you hear me?"
"No..." The driver's voice was visibly trembling. Although he didn't understand why his master would make such a decision today, according to the rules, if ordinary people blocked an official carriage, they could be beaten to death with sticks. Moreover, he was just following orders to drive the carriage past.
The carriage started moving again, and there was no sound of a woman being hit.
Xie Zhan placed one hand on the back of the girl's head, making her feel more secure against his chest. His chin rested on the top of her head, and he gently closed his eyes. He was enjoying the tranquility of the moment.
After about half an incense stick's time, they arrived at the Xie residence.
The old lady came to the door to greet her most beloved youngest son, but when she saw Xie Zhan carrying Fengguang down, her face immediately fell. "What kind of behavior is this?"
"Mother, please keep your voice down. Fengguang drank some wine last night and hasn't slept well. She's sleepy right now, so it's not her fault." Xie Zhan said this to the old lady in a hurry before carrying Fengguang through the gate.
Tan Rou frowned, "Old lady..."
"I know." Old Mrs. Xie lowered her gaze, but she had no choice.
Xie Zhan took Feng Guang back to her room, and Zhao Wan rushed over to take care of her. When she saw that Feng Guang was just asleep, she breathed a sigh of relief, but then complained in a low voice, "This girl knows she can't drink, but she still insists on drinking. She deserves to suffer."
"Sister-in-law, don't blame Feng Guang." Xie Zhan saw Feng Guang impatiently turn over and continue sleeping with the blanket. He smiled and said, "Isn't Feng Guang quite lovable even like this?"
Zhao Wan sighed, "Fortunately, Feng Guang didn't grow up by your side. If she had an elder like you who indulges her so much, she would probably have caused a huge uproar."
"If things really get out of hand, I'll always be the one to clean up the mess." Xie Zhan added with a smile, "My sister-in-law said she wasn't feeling well, but she seems to be feeling much better now."
Zhao Wan's smile froze for a moment before she said, "It was just a minor ailment, it's already healed."
"That's good." Xie Zhan said, then looked at Feng Guang lying on the bed. "Over the years, I've been fighting on the front lines and have acquired quite a few trinkets. When Feng Guang wakes up, you can tell her about them. If she's interested, she can come find me."
Zhao Wan smiled and nodded, "Okay."
