“It is indeed a very dangerous thing, but the greater the reward, the more dangerous the thing.” Arno said, “Wendy, do you think your place in Herman’s heart might actually be more important than his beliefs?”
“Of course not!” Feng Guang answered without hesitation: “Herman has been a bishop for many years. He has been influenced by the ideology of the Holy See since childhood. Don’t you know very well how strong the Holy See’s ability to brainwash people is!”
Even her parents were willing to give up on her. Under the weight of "faith," even family ties can be worthless. How much stronger can love be?
Arno laughed easily, "You accept it so readily, but how can we be sure if we don't try? I'm going to take a gamble, Wendy, you should take a gamble too. The Vatican and your lover, what will Herman choose?"
"You can't do this!" Feng Guang gripped the iron door of the cell. She didn't know whether her current panic stemmed from fear that Herman would get into trouble, or from fear that... Herman would choose to abandon her.
Arno placed a plate of food on the ground. "I know you can't eat that stuff. This food was made by the chef, so you can eat it without worry. Now, I'm going to find Herman."
"Arno!" Feng Guang watched Arno's retreating figure, stamping her feet in frustration, but could only stay in the prison and worry helplessly.
Arno seemed to be in a good mood after leaving the prison. He walked to the Vatican, and it was getting late. However, the moment he stepped into the dimly lit corridor, Arno clearly sensed that something was wrong.
He stopped in his tracks. "I think you should be back by now."
A figure slowly emerged from the dark corner; it was Hermann, expressionless.
Arno smiled. "Magic cannot be used in the palace prison, Your Grace. Are you feeling discouraged that you cannot personally rescue Wendy?"
“You deliberately attacked me while I was away on a mission.” Herman took a step closer, his figure appearing faintly in the twilight, looking somewhat thin.
Arno said, "If you were here, I definitely wouldn't have been able to catch Wendy."
"You have a good sense of self-awareness."
Some time ago, a villager reported that members of the Wizard Association had appeared in a village, and that they were said to be very dangerous. Herman led his men there, but by the time he received the news and rushed back, Feng Guang had already been arrested.
Arno added, "You know my purpose very well. Now, you have a choice: Wendy or to remain loyal to your beliefs."
“There’s no choice.” Herman’s eyes darkened. “Nothing in this world can compare to Wendy.”
"Your Excellency is truly devoted," Arno remarked with a half-smile.
Just then, a group of people from the Vatican came over. "Bishop Herman, so you've returned! That's wonderful! We've been waiting for you to judge the Daughter of Darkness."
“No need to wait.” Hermann’s emotionless voice fell as he walked through the crowd.
As he moved step by step, in the dim light of dusk, bursts of blood erupted in the air.
Arno's eyes widened slightly as he watched those people, without uttering a sound, turn into a pile of flesh and blood and fall to the ground.
Herman stood before Arno, his back carpeted with blood. “Give Wendy back to me, and I will wash this Vatican in blood.”
