The person ran quickly and, before Shi Lan could speak, berated her, "What kind of wife are you? Your husband has been beaten so badly he can't get out of bed, and you still have the mood to wander around here."
Shi Lan blinked, and after a few seconds, she said, "Auntie, what brings you here?"
The woman Shi Lan referred to as "Auntie" was none other than Liu Jinxiang's mother, Miao Xiaojuan.
Miao Xiaojuan glared fiercely at Shi Lan and said aggressively, "Why can't I come? Next year you'll be my Liu family's daughter-in-law. Would it be embarrassing for me to come?"
Shi Lan frowned and said, "That's not what I meant. I wanted to ask if you came to see me for something?"
"What happened?" Miao Xiaojuan glared at him and said, "I don't know what kind of scourge we've run into. We were just having a good time when we ran into a robber. My Jinxiang is such an honest man. He gave us the money, but that scoundrel wasn't satisfied and beat us up..."
Miao Xiaojuan was emotional, and as she spoke, tears streamed down her face, and she broke down in tears.
Shi Lan stared at her blankly for a while, then took out a tissue from her pocket and handed it to her.
Miao Xiaojuan wiped away her tears, took a breath, and finally calmed down a bit before saying, "Jinxiang is still lying down and can't move. The doctor said it's some kind of sponge injury, but I don't know what it is. Anyway, he can't move right now."
Miao Xiaojuan was a little down because her education level was too low, and she couldn't understand those complicated medical terms at all. Liu Jinxiang was too proud to explain, so she only knew that it was bad, but she wasn't sure exactly what was wrong.
Shi Lan pursed her lips. Although she felt a little guilty for making Miao Xiaojuan so sad, she couldn't deny that knowing he wasn't good for her made her feel so at ease.
"Where is he now?"
Shi Lan said in a low voice, her voice choked with emotion.
“He’s at the Third Hospital. You’re free anyway, go over and keep an eye on him. I’ll go back and make him something delicious to help him get some nutrition,” Shi’s mother said without asking Shi Lan any questions. She adjusted the strap of her bag and turned to leave. When she saw Shi Lan standing there motionless, she shouted, “Hey, why are you still standing there like an idiot? Come with me!”
Shi Lan brushed a stray hair behind her ear, thinking to herself, "How does she know I'm alright? I have plenty of things to do." But she said expressionlessly, "Auntie, I have other things to do. Please take care of things at the hospital."
Miao Xiaojuan was furious. She strode up to her and raised her hand high.
Shi Lan looked at her coldly, her fingers half-clenched into a fist, her arm slightly tense.
When people around saw the argument, they stopped in their tracks, turned to look back, slowed down and whispered among themselves. Some quick-thinking individuals even took out their phones, ready to film some sensational videos.
Seeing the situation around her, Miao Xiaojuan remembered what Liu's father had told her to be mindful of her image and not to embarrass the Liu family. Reluctantly, she lowered her arm, then spat again, shouting, "You heartless wretch! My Jinxiang treats you with all his heart, buying you this and that, worrying you're not getting enough nutrition, booking restaurants for you, and always praising you to me for being so sensible and reasonable. I thought you were a good person, and I even told his father to get you two together as soon as possible. But look at you now! How can you face Jinxiang? He's been sick for so many days, and what have you done? You haven't even offered a damn. A lady from a respectable family, a scholarly household—I spit on you!"
Culture determines quality. Miao Xiaojuan only went to the third or fourth grade of elementary school. She spoke as freely as she wanted, and her vulgarity was unbearable.
Shi Lan didn't want to make her private affairs public, and with some reservations, she couldn't explain things clearly in person. So she said, "Auntie, my affair with Liu Jinxiang can't be explained in a few words. If you want to know the situation, you can go back and ask him. Over the years, I believe I've treated him well. On the contrary, he owes me a life, and we broke up a long time ago. His affairs have nothing to do with me. However, considering that we've known each other, I'll visit him when I have time. As for taking care of him, I think you've come to the wrong person. There's someone else who wants to take care of him."
After saying that, Shi Lan left without looking back.
Miao Xiaojuan seemed surprised that Shi Lan had said such a thing, and that Shi Lan's attitude was so firm. She was momentarily stunned.
Seeing that there was no excitement to be seen, the people around dispersed in twos and threes.
Miao Xiaojuan glanced around sheepishly, lowered her head, and hurried away.
Walking towards the library, Shi Lan grew increasingly angry. That scoundrel Liu Jinxiang! He had the audacity to spout nonsense in front of Shi's father, nearly scaring the old man to death, but why couldn't he at least explain things clearly to his own family? They had already broken up. When he was young and carefree, he was a womanizer and a philanderer, but when trouble came, he had his mother jump in to cause her trouble. Was he planning to drag her down with him if he became a eunuch?
Finally, Shi Lan stopped in her tracks, turned around and left the school gate, taking a taxi straight to the hospital.
Hospitals are always bustling with people. After checking her information at the service desk, Shi Lan went straight to the elevator and rushed to the ward door.
After knocking twice, Shi Lan pushed the door open and went inside.
On the hospital bed, Liu Jinxiang lay half-reclined. Two police officers stood to the inside. One had a handsome face and was holding a pen and paper, seemingly taking notes. The other, with thick eyebrows and phoenix eyes, stood by the bed, his gaze shifting from Liu Jinxiang to the doorway.
Shi Lan was surprised to find police officers inside. She paused for a moment before saying, "Did I come at the wrong time? Should I go outside and wait for a while?"
Liu Jinxiang turned his head to look at her, a hint of joy on his face, "Lanlan."
Seeing that Liu Jinxiang recognized him, Danfeng nodded to Shi Lan and said, "No need, we just came to verify the situation and will leave immediately." As she spoke, she looked down at Liu Jinxiang and asked, "Are you sure the thug you saw back then was this person?"
