Chang sat for a while longer before getting up and leaving.
The cold wind rose and then died down. Shi Lan opened her eyes and looked at the felt blanket that was still swaying and had not yet fallen, and frowned.
If she were to foolishly wait until tomorrow in her current condition, she would surely die. She doesn't want to break her record of zero mission failures.
With difficulty, Shi Lan lifted the covers, propped herself up, and slowly got out of bed.
The room wasn't very warm, and with her back throbbing with pain, Shi Lan couldn't help but shiver several times.
After struggling to put on her clothes, Shi Lan stood barefoot on the hard kang (a heated brick bed), arms outstretched, feet slowly lifting, feeling the tearing pain in her back intensifying. She bit her lower lip, enduring the pain and trying to stretch her body.
The pain in her back and the throbbing pain in her muscles and bones were intertwined, making it difficult for her to even breathe.
After finally completing the two movements, Shi Lan felt a warm current flowing through her body. She stopped to catch her breath for a while, and felt the tightness in her chest ease. Only then did she start moving again.
Time passed both quickly and slowly. It got dark outside, and the sounds of people walking and children running and shouting gradually increased. Only then did Shi Lan stop her body tempering, take off her clothes again, crawl into the quilt, and once again become half-dead.
As darkness fell, the curtain was finally lifted, and the aroma of rice wafted in with the cool breeze, accompanied by the sound of earthenware pots scraping against the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed).
Chang reached out and touched her forehead.
Having just finished exercising, Shi Lan was drenched in sweat, her face burning hot, almost hot enough to fry an egg on, but her body temperature had dropped. (Latest and fastest updates)
Chang Shi had no idea about any of this. She only felt that the temperature was a few degrees hotter than at noon. When she thought of the people who had worked with her that afternoon talking about how they couldn't make it through, she panicked and didn't know what to do.
Shi Lan squinted at her panicked appearance, and only then did she realize that the original owner did indeed have a place in her heart. Although it wasn't in that secret, it wasn't as insignificant as she had imagined.
For some reason, she felt a sense of relief, and her initial thought of using force to force her to tell the truth faded away.
Chang carefully wrapped Shi Lan up tightly and called her name softly, but Shi Lan did not move, as if she had lost all feeling.
Suddenly, Chang began to sob, and teardrops fell onto Shi Lan's face, the warm water droplets turning icy cold in an instant.
Shi Lan's face was still flushed, and her hands began to twitch slightly. Her breathing was intermittent, as if she was about to breathe her last.
Chang hurriedly called out to Shi Lan and gently patted her cheek, hoping to wake her up.
The violent slap brought a slight stinging pain to her cheek, and her muscles twitched uncontrollably. Shi Lan gritted her teeth and forced herself to endure it, hoping that the Chang family was not so observant as to see through her tricks based on mere clues.
Chang patted her a few more times, but seeing that Shi Lan had no reaction and the temperature on her face began to drop slowly.
Upon realizing this, she suddenly broke down in tears, muttering incoherently, "It's all my fault, it's all my fault, I'm the one who should die."
Shi Lan peeked out a crack in her eyes, but Chang Shi didn't notice and continued muttering to herself.
Shi Lan was impatient with these repetitive remarks, but since she was still pretending to be dead, all she could do was pray that she would have a stroke of luck and get some useful clues.
Chang was still weeping there. Shi Lan had been practicing martial arts all afternoon and was exhausted. Listening to the hypnotic whimpering, she drifted off to sleep.
At midnight, Chang finally stopped crying and began to fetch water to wash her face.
Startled by the sound of water, Shi Lan subconsciously opened her eyes and saw Chang Shi wringing out a towel.
Seeing her move slightly, Shi Lan quickly closed her eyes and waited quietly.
Chang Shi didn't notice anything. She just lowered her eyes, gently unfolded the handkerchief, smoothed out the edges, folded it neatly, and then began to wash Shi Lan's face.
She gently wiped her cheeks, brushed aside her stray hairs, and carefully examined her delicate yet already refined face. After a while, she suddenly sighed, "Lan Ya, don't blame your mother. I was confused at the time and that's why I switched you with San Ya." She carefully wiped Shi Lan's forehead and said softly, "I didn't want to either. Who would want to be separated from their own flesh and blood? But what could I do? The world is hard, and wars are frequent. Since that family could afford a wet nurse, it means they are quite well-off. She is my only child, and I hope she can survive. For San Ya's sake, I had to disregard my conscience. I'm sorry."
Chang continued to wipe carefully, but a fire burned in Shi Lan's heart. No wonder she kept this secret so tightly. It turned out that she was not only not the original owner's biological mother, but also the murderer who dragged the original owner into hell.
She must have confided these things to the original owner back then, but the original owner had already passed away and never heard these words. A feeling slowly swelled in Shi Lan's heart, and a burning pain rose in her chest.
Chang was still carefully combing Shi Lan's hair, murmuring repentance. Shi Lan, impatient with her rambling, suddenly opened her eyes, her dark pupils clearly reflecting Chang's image. "Then Mother, can you tell me who my real mother is?"
Shi Lan's eyes were dark and deep, containing only a hazy human figure.
Chang Shi never expected that a dead person could still open their eyes. She immediately cried out in surprise and rolled off the kang (a heated brick bed). Then, she hurriedly scrambled to the corner of the wall close to the edge of the kang, her eyes darting around at Shi Lan. She trembled like a leaf, her face pale with fright.
Seeing her like this, Shi Lan suddenly had a flash of inspiration. She imitated the zombie Ze, straightened her back and sat up directly on the kang. She stretched out her hands in front of her with a "whoosh", stared at her with her lifeless and dim eyes, and said, "The ghost messenger said that I did not repay my birth mother for carrying me for ten months, so the King of Hell will not let me reincarnate."
