Chapter 256 Insignificant Characters in the Apocalypse (Part 4)

As evening approached, everyone missed their accommodation. With nightfall looming, Shen Chen had no choice but to park the car in a slightly flat open space by the roadside.

Feeling a little embarrassed by his mistake, Minghao volunteered to go for a walk around the neighborhood to see if there were any small mutated beasts to hunt down and add to everyone's meal. Guo Dabao had made his relationship with Liu Hui public today, so he also wanted to take the opportunity to show off and said he would go with Minghao so that they could look after each other.

The two entered the reed marshland, which was at least waist-high. Shi Lan pulled a bunch of dry grass from the roadside to start a fire, boil some water, and then heat up the steamed buns.

Liu Hui was still angry with Shi Lan because of what had happened before. Seeing Shi Lan busy, she didn't come down to help. She just wrapped her clothes tighter, snorted coldly, and leaned back in her chair without moving.

Chen Chen sat in the front seat, glanced at the busy figure in the rearview mirror, then looked at the pretty face reflected in the rearview mirror, a smile playing on her lips, and moved from the front to the back.

"Why are you unhappy?"

Shen Chen sat down next to Liu Hui, lowered his head, and whispered.

"Where is it?" Liu Hui glanced sideways at the face that kept getting closer to her.

Shen Chen wasn't angry at her coquettish reproach. He gently brushed his lips against her earlobe and whispered, "Did you have fun today?"

Liu Hui raised her eyebrows, about to speak, when she felt a sharp pain in her ear, and her small ear was instantly swallowed by the man.

The touch, seemingly light yet heavy, ignited a fire within Liu Hui, and the lingering emotions from the day surged forth like a rapidly rising tide.

The car began to shake, and the reinforced wheels seemed unable to bear the constantly fluctuating weight, emitting a faint creaking sound.

Shi Lan lit a fire half a meter away from the car. When she looked up, she saw the car swaying back and forth, and her fair face immediately changed color.

When will this ever end?

Shi Lan spat lightly, threw down the branch in her hand, and sat down on a rock.

About twenty minutes later, Liu Hui rolled down the car window, revealing half her face, and said, "Sister, it's too cold, let's boil some water."

Shi Lan glanced at her sideways, thinking to herself, "She's not clumsy, why does she always have to boss others around?"

"I'd like to burn it, but I'm afraid if I open the door, you'll catch a cold."

Liu Hui glanced inside and said sweetly, "What are you talking about? There's nothing between me and Chen Chen."

Shi Lan pursed her lips. In the original owner's memories, the two of them did everything except go shirtless.

The car door opened and someone pulled it open from the inside. Shen Chen got out of the car looking quite presentable. Although his clothes had some creases, they were natural wrinkles from sitting all morning, and not the wrinkles that Shi Lan had imagined.

Shen Chen handed over the kettle, which was half full of water, and said gently, "Don't misunderstand, Xiao Hui is Guo Dabao's girlfriend now. I was just having a heart-to-heart talk with Xiao Hui."

Shi Lan nodded noncommittally, hung the water bottle on the makeshift shelf, added a few more handfuls of dry grass, and then said, "It doesn't matter if I misunderstand or not, the key is not to let Guo Dabao misunderstand." She looked Chen Chen up and down, her eyes filled with a smile, "Otherwise, I'll have to worry about your frail body."

Shen Chen frowned slightly, wanting to speak again, when the sound of washing up came from the reeds.

Shi Lan instinctively stood up warily, turned around and grabbed a machete from the front seat. Shen Chen was taken aback, but reacted quickly and also grabbed a stick.

Inside the car, Liu Hui quickly closed the door, staring in terror at the swaying reeds.

The rustling sound grew closer, a hand parted the reeds, and then a familiar voice came, "I didn't expect there to be rabbits here. They're so big, they're enough for us to eat our fill."

Guo Dabao's loud voice relieved Shi Lan, who was on high alert.

After a short while, Guo Dabao and Minghao gradually emerged from the reeds.

"Shi Lan, here you go!" Guo Dabao held the large rabbit ears with both hands and threw it towards Shi Lan.

The rabbit was over two feet long and its plump body probably weighed twenty or thirty pounds. Guo Dabao threw it straight at Shi Lan's head. If it hit her, a nosebleed would be the least of her worries.

Shi Lan knew that this was retaliation for what happened during the day, so she took half a step to the left and tilted her body slightly. The rabbit flew past Shi Lan's head and hit Liu Hui, who was about to open the car door.

Guo Dabao quickly shouted, "Be careful!"

As soon as Liu Hui looked up, she saw a huge creature rushing towards her, which startled her so much that she froze.

The rabbit brushed past her shoulder and landed by the car door with a muffled 'thud'.

The car shook violently a few times. Shi Lan glanced at the rabbit that had fallen beside the car, and when she turned her head again, the coldness in her eyes intensified.

Liu Hui clutched her chest, staring at the rabbit as well, and said in a sweet but angry voice, "Guo Dabao, are you trying to scare me to death?"

Guo Dabao scratched his head and laughed, "Xiao Hui, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to."

Liu Hui glanced at Shi Lan with a charming look, knowing that Guo Dabao wasn't trying to make things difficult for her, and said, "Be careful next time."

Seeing that Liu Hui didn't scold him, Guo Dabao smiled even more foolishly, and ran over to snuggle up to Liu Hui.

Minghao, who was a step behind, witnessed the whole thing. Seeing Liu Hui leave, he took two steps forward and whispered, "Guo Dabao doesn't know his own strength. I hope he didn't scare you just now."

Shi Lan glanced at him coldly, wondering whether he was a subordinate or someone who was deliberately trying to kill someone; who could say for sure?

Shi Lan ignored him completely, turned around and went to the car to get two steamed buns, which she then roasted over the fire.

Seeing that the atmosphere between the two was not right, Shen Chen smiled slightly and turned to look at the two people who had hidden behind the car.
