It seemed like only a moment had passed before Shi Lan was woken up by Ming Xiao, who raised his furry dog face.
"It's about time; you should go do your mission."
Shi Lan blinked, snapping out of her daze.
A vortex appeared in the sky, and she involuntarily flew up, spinning along with the vortex.
A cacophony of noise and screams erupted in her ears. Shi Lan opened her eyes with difficulty and found herself surrounded by chaos. A few steps away, several maids in double buns wearing vests ran towards her. A man stood helplessly to the side, while a well-dressed old woman behind him pushed him aside and bent down to help her.
"Young lady, young lady, please don't frighten this old servant," the old woman gently patted the stunned Shi Lan and called out softly.
Shi Lan opened her mouth, but before she could utter a sound, she was horrified to find that her body was moving on its own, following the old woman's hand, without her control.
"I'm fine."
The old woman breathed a sigh of relief, quickly helped her up, gently brushed the dust off her clothes, and turned to scold the maid who had just rushed over, "Are you all dead? Why didn't you pull the girl away when you saw the carriage?"
The maids quickly begged for forgiveness.
The old woman scolded her a couple more times, showing a rather unyielding attitude. As the crowd gradually gathered around because of the shouts from earlier, Shi Lan felt a surge of annoyance and heard her own voice in her ear.
"Alright, isn't that embarrassing enough? Hurry up and go back home."
Although the old woman was old, she was still sharp of hearing and sight, and her mind was incredibly shrewd. The ill intent in her words was obvious, and how could she not understand it?
The wrinkled eyelids glanced sideways at the stunned man.
The man, jolted back to his senses by the stab, quickly ran a few steps, pulled over the carriage tied to the side, put down a footstool, and waited for the old woman to help her master into the carriage before carefully cracking the whip and hurrying back to the mansion.
The maids helped their mistress back to her courtyard, and the old woman hurried to the main courtyard to report, taking the opportunity to shirk responsibility.
When Madam Yu heard that someone had been hit by a carriage, she didn't bother to listen carefully and immediately ordered someone to fetch a doctor. She herself rushed to Mingcui Courtyard.
There was a flurry of activity in the courtyard. When Madam Yu entered, she saw Shi Lan being helped to sit down by the bed by the maids. Her socks were half off, revealing a shocking dark purple stain on her fair and delicate instep.
"What happened?"
Madam Yu's eyebrows shot up, unleashing her full power as the matriarch of the household.
All the maids and servants present were so frightened that they knelt down on the ground.
Madam Yu glanced around coldly, then fixed her gaze on the maidservant standing close to the bed. "Yunzhu, you speak."
Yunzhu's shoulders twitched. She said, "It's so hot and humid today. Miss got tired of sitting in the carriage, so we servants came out with you to get some fresh air. But then, out of nowhere, a mad horse appeared and pulled the carriage around. Miss couldn't dodge in time, and..."
Madam Yu snorted coldly, "That's because you were careless. Otherwise, why are you all fine, but the young lady injured her foot?"
Yunzhu shivered and lowered her head.
Yu took two steps forward, looking at the instep that was already swollen high with pity, and said, "My poor little darling, I hope you don't hurt your bones."
"The clinic isn't far away, why hasn't the doctor arrived yet?" Madam Yu touched him cautiously, and immediately heard a painful gasp in her ear, which startled her. She quickly turned around and scolded him.
The old woman who had come with Madam Yu hurried out, and before half a cup of tea was finished, she brought in a young woman of beautiful youth.
Upon seeing the visitor, Madam Yu quickly put on a smile and said, "Dr. Zhou, I'd like to trouble you to take a look at me."
Zhou nodded reservedly, put down the medicine box she was carrying, first looked at Shi Lan's feet, and then took out a lumbar support to take her pulse.
Madam Yu stared at her nervously, and when she saw that Madam Yu's expression was somewhat gloomy, she immediately felt a pang of panic.
"Did you injure any bones or muscles?"
Zhou Shi came to her senses and shook her head. "It's nothing serious. The young lady's injury looks frightening, but it's just a bruise. Apply some herbal medicine and take a few more medicinal baths."
Mrs. Yu breathed a sigh of relief.
Zhou pursed her lips, picked up her medicine box, and left the inner room.
Madam Yu instructed the maids to serve her carefully and hurriedly followed her out. As they walked, a voice drifted over, asking if there were any dietary restrictions for the next two days.
Seeing everyone leave, Yunzhu adopted the demeanor of a head maid, instructing the serving maids to attend to other matters. She then took a pillow and placed it behind her mistress, while lowering her voice to say, "Miss, the carriage's arrival was suspicious. Do you think we should inform Young Master Jiang?"
As Shi Lan was wondering who this Young Master Jiang was, she heard her own body say, "No need, I'm a little tired and want to rest for a while."
Yunzhu nodded and quietly left.
She heard the sound of the door closing, and Shi Lan saw her vision shift from what was in front of her to every corner of the room.
The Shi family came from a scholarly background, and the Yu family was also from a distinguished family. The original owner was influenced by this environment from a young age, and the house he decorated was exquisite and elegant, with a subtle luxury in its understated style.
A click of the tongue came from beside her ear, and then her vision changed again. She hopped and skipped to the dressing table by the wall. Her fair fingers supported her on the table, and her other hand was turning over a box carved with several plum blossoms. The pearl flowers and ribbons rolled together as she turned them over, no longer as neat as before.
"So this is how women from wealthy families live."
The dim, yellowish mirror stood silently, and the beautiful woman in the orange-yellow light smiled eerily, sending chills down Shi Lan's spine.
The old woman who had just helped her up in the courtyard was scolding the maids in the courtyard. Her loud voice drowned out the sound of her footsteps as she walked to the door. When the door was pushed open, the person in the mirror realized that something was wrong. Her fair and delicate face suddenly changed, and she hurriedly jumped back to the bedside.
Yunzhu carefully passed through the curtain with a teacup in her hand. "Miss, I added some extra chamomile to soothe your pain and calm your nerves. It tastes a bit astringent, but it's still palatable."
