At this moment, Shi Lan, who was standing under the city wall, ran wildly, followed by a group of vicious barbarians.
Sharp spikes were thrown by barbarians from time to time, and several dozen feet away, the tall city gate slowly opened, and a group of guards wearing armor and holding sharp blades rushed in to the sound of surging drums.
Shi Lan smiled slightly.
Now that reinforcements have arrived, she might as well go all out and kill them all.
Shi Lan turned around and fought to the death with the barbarians behind her, who were already furious from her provocation, hoping to gain a glimmer of hope for herself.
The sharp longsword sliced across the burly barbarian's body, spurting out streams of blood.
Shi Lan squinted, leaping and bounding amidst the crimson, each strike of her sword drawing forth a torrent of blood.
As the sound of horses' hooves drew closer, the barbarians who had been knocked down by brute force could only groan a few times before being trampled into a bloody pulp by the horses' hooves.
The valiant guards whizzed past, brushing against Shi Lan's clothes. Shi Lan stood quietly, watching the guards ride off on horseback, slaughtering the fleeing barbarians one by one.
Suddenly, a low sigh reached my ears: "The victor is king, the loser is villain; it has always been so. The most innocent are the common people who live the hardest lives."
Shi Lan glanced sideways.
Wang Liu's long, narrow eyes narrowed slightly, a hint of pity in them.
Shi Lan frowned dismissively. How could a high-ranking young man who lived a life of luxury every day understand the suffering of someone who was starving and lived on the edge of life and death every day?
Wang Liu seemed a little cold, pulled his collar tighter, and said, "The crisis at Yancheng has been resolved. What are your plans next?"
Shi Lan chuckled, "Plans? I'm a guard of the Xun family, so naturally I'll go back to where I came from."
Wang Liu pursed his lips, listening to Shi Lan's somewhat sarcastic tone. For some reason, he didn't reveal his own plans, but instead changed the subject, saying, "I have already ordered my maid to prepare a room. You should go and rest first. We can talk about going back after you've rested."
Shi Lan rolled her eyes at him.
Wang Liu stared straight ahead, not even glancing at her.
Shi Lan raised an eyebrow, but didn't say anything.
She has already demonstrated her talent; what happens next is beyond her control.
She had already witnessed his foresight, and Shi Lan believed that whether it was for immediate worries or for the prosperity of the family, Wang Liu would not let her go back.
This is the most crucial moment in the game between the two sides. It depends on who can hold on and persevere. Only the one who can get what they want will succeed. Shi Lan firmly believes that she will be the one who succeeds in the end.
Upon returning to the city lord's mansion, a maid was already waiting at the door. Upon seeing Shi Lan, she led her to a room that had been scented with incense.
Lying softly on the couch, Shi Lan stretched out her arms and legs and fell asleep quickly without even having time to wash up.
Although the assassination attempt was brief, she stealthily made her way into the crowd, using her keen intuition and rational judgment to quickly identify her target. She then killed him with lightning speed, while maintaining utmost vigilance to avoid being surrounded by the enraged barbarians. After all, her mission wasn't complete yet, and losing her life would render all her previous efforts futile.
As darkness turned to light, birds, having slept soundly through the night, hopped onto branches and chirped merrily in the bright morning sun.
Shi Lan lazily opened her eyes. A maidservant was standing by the door. Seeing that she had opened her eyes, the maidservant quickly walked over and carefully helped her up, saying, "Did you sleep well, nun? The water I prepared is just the right temperature for you to wash up now."
Shi Lan used her strength to get up, took the wrung-out handkerchief, and wiped her face.
The maid then brought over a stack of silk brocade garments and said, "Please change, nun."
Shi Lan casually flipped through the clothes and said, "These clothes are too ornate and complicated; I feel uncomfortable wearing them."
The maid looked up at her and saw that although her expression was calm, it carried an unquestionable air. She then stammered, "Then I'll go and get you something else."
Shi Lan nodded, and a moment later, the maid returned, this time carrying a piece of blue linen cloth.
Shi Lan reached out and touched it. This cloth was finer and thinner than any she had ever seen before, but strangely, it wasn't see-through. It felt very comfortable against her skin, like a second layer.
Shi Lan lifted up the clothes and examined them closely in the sunlight.
Only then did they realize that the thin fabric actually consisted of more than one layer. However, the fabric was so thin that the two layers together were even thinner than ordinary linen.
Shi Lan pursed her lips. She had been here for quite some time and had some understanding of the productivity here.
Ordinary kudzu cloth is usually used as a headscarf or an undergarment. The kind of kudzu cloth that a gentleman like Xun Shiba uses for his undergarments is of that kind. The kind she has in her hand now seems to be no different from those kinds of kudzu cloth, but in terms of value, even a whole cart of those kinds of kudzu cloth cannot compare to an inch of the kind she has.
"Lan is just a guard; he shouldn't be wearing such clothes."
Seeing the maid shake out the clothes, Shi Lan took a half step back and declined.
The maid was at a loss when she heard what she said.
“What is there to be ashamed of? Alan saved over a thousand people in the city with her own strength. Even if it were a hundred times more precious, she would still be worthy of it,” a clear and deep male voice echoed in the corridor. Shi Lan looked up and saw Wang Liu enter wearing a moon-white robe embroidered with gold trim. The green bamboo on the hem swayed gently as he walked, giving people a sense of aloofness and purity.
Shi Lan bowed and said, "I am not worthy of your praise, young master. This is the Xun family's territory, and I am only fulfilling my duty as a guard."
Wang Liu smiled slightly and said, "Humility is a virtue, but being too humble is not good. Don't you think so, A-Lan?"
Shi Lan's brow twitched slightly, and she lowered her head and cupped her hands in a respectful gesture.
