Chapter 308 The Journey to Rescue My Childhood Sweetheart Begins (Part Two)

"Since you're so reluctant to part with him, how about I take you there so you can have a proper talk with him?"

Shi Lan had no idea there was someone behind her. She turned around abruptly and saw a tall man standing with his arms crossed behind a crooked tree not far away, watching for who knows how long.

Shi Lan frowned, suddenly becoming annoyed. But before she could lash out, she was surprised to find that the Soul-Destroying Nail in her mind was beating wildly. If she hadn't been holding it back, it would have already run to the man and started dancing.

Who are you?

Shi Lan stared wide-eyed and questioned him with a righteous indignation.

The man chuckled softly, his tone tinged with sarcasm, "Three years have passed since we parted, and my wife doesn't even recognize her own husband anymore."

Shi Lan's mouth was slightly open, and it took her a while to react.

"Can't you speak properly? It's so dark, and you're standing so far away. I can't even see where I'm going, let alone you," the man said, his voice filled with deep hostility. Even though she couldn't see him clearly, Shi Lan sensed danger. Perhaps the pressure was stimulating her potential, because she rolled her eyes and, without even stuttering, came up with this explanation.

Upon hearing this, the man strode forward.

In the hazy, veil-like moonlight, as faint as ripples on water, the man's rugged face came into Shi Lan's view.

His thick, black hair was tied into a bun with strips of cloth, revealing his broad forehead, dark, sword-like eyebrows, and a pair of dark eyes that were like deep pools, cold and unfathomable. His nose was high and straight, and a faint shadow fell from the sides of his nose, obscuring a corner of his lips. Perhaps he was in a bad mood at the moment, because his beautiful lips were tightly pursed, giving off a sharp and murderous aura.

"Is my wife satisfied?"

The man's lips curled slightly, and his words were gentle, but Shi Lan still felt that he was being sarcastic.

But since I had a mission to complete, and considering all the things Haoze had done for me, what did a little hardship matter?

Shi Lan comforted herself for a few moments, then quickly forced a smile and said, "I'm extremely satisfied. Why would I have married you if I wasn't satisfied?"

Shi Lan thought she was just going along with what he said, but before she could finish speaking, the man glared at her and walked away without saying a word.

Shi Lan was a little dumbfounded. What was going on? She was clearly praising him, so why did he look unhappy?

The man strode confidently along the country road, followed by a woman whose body swayed like a willow in the wind, stumbling along behind him.

Strangely enough, the man seemed to be walking briskly, but no matter how he walked, he never stayed more than three steps away from the woman. If the woman walked a little faster, he would walk faster; if the woman couldn't keep up and slowed down, he would slow down as well.

After a while of this contest, someone came over with a lantern in the distance. The man paused, and his pace slowed down. When the woman came to his side, he said with a look of disdain, "You walk so slowly, what can you do?"

Shi Lan rolled her eyes at him, but ultimately didn't dare to argue back.

She was new here and didn't know anything about what was happening. He was an avatar of Lord Haoze, so she should give him some leeway.

The lantern swayed as it approached, and only then did Shi Lan realize that the person holding the lantern was a young girl.

"Brother Mo, have you found him?" The girl immediately came to greet the man, her clear voice filled with girlish brightness and shyness towards her beloved.

The man nodded without saying a word.

The girl stood beside the man, chattering about the things she had arranged for people to unload the carriages and horses while he was away.

Shi Lan pursed her lips, her goodwill towards the girl turning into deep malice before she could even feel it.

Mingxiao told her to eliminate the evil spirit while she was at it, and that evil spirit was a woman, so Shilan felt disgusted with any woman who got close to Haoze.

Shi Lan paused slightly, falling half a step behind the man. Just as the girl eagerly approached the man, Shi Lan suddenly stepped forward and forcefully pushed the girl aside.

The girl was jostled by Shi Lan and stumbled, falling onto the ridge of the field by the roadside.

Shi Lan let out a fake "ouch," leaning halfway against the man, her fingers automatically hooking around his arm, and said, "Little sister, how could you be so careless? You're carrying a lamp and you don't even look where you're going?"

The girl, looking aggrieved, rubbed the hem of her skirt, her moist lips half-bitten, and stood on the edge of the field gazing at the man with watery eyes.

Shi Lan snorted. How dare they seduce her man right under her nose? They must be tired of living.

Shi Lan snatched the lantern away, seemingly with good intentions, and said, "The dew is heavy at night. If you stand here any longer, the dew will soak through your skirt. There are people coming and going here. Although there are fewer people at night, there are still some. If someone sees you, will you still marry or not? If the man's family already has a wife and won't let you in, you'll probably have to go to a nunnery to survive."

As she spoke, Shi Lan grabbed the man and strode forward.

The man leaned to one side, letting Shi Lan pull him along. Despite being a seven-foot-tall strong man, he seemed as thin as paper. Shi Lan only needed to pull him gently, and he obediently followed.

Shi Lan glanced at him sideways, secretly thinking, "He's smart enough to know his place."

The lamplight followed the two figures further and further away. The girl watched for a while with tears in her eyes, then stomped hard on the grass under her feet, gritted her teeth in defiance, and climbed up the ridge of the field, her bound feet wobbling as she chased after them.

Hearing the commotion, Shi Lan turned her head to look. Seeing that the girl was having some trouble chasing after him, she grinned and took even bigger steps.

The man's gaze never left her. Seeing her like this, the corners of his mouth curled up slightly, and he followed her lead, quickening his pace a bit.

As the girl chased after him and fell further and further behind, she finally broke down in tears in anger.

Shi Lan curled her lips, took two steps forward, and stood still, saying, "What bad luck! What kind of people are these? They cry at the drop of a hat. Their tears are really worthless."
