"What phenomenon?" Qiao Heping, the youngest and most curious of the five, asked curiously.
"Ding!" The elevator suddenly arrived.
As the group stepped out of the elevator, Rebershu said, "You'll find out soon enough."
The elevator doors slowly closed and rose again. The top of the elevator was just a thin iron plate. Chen Ke punched down and punched a hole in it. With a force of his hands, he rolled the iron plate up to both sides along the hole, making it big enough for one person to pass through.
Chen Ke jumped into the elevator and pressed the down button again.
The elevator doors opened with a "ding," and a gentle breeze blew in, but the elevator was empty.
At this moment, the five people arrived in the hall, and a little boy with an electronic projection appeared in front of them.
"The doctor is currently conducting research. Please follow me to the conference room."
Although the five of them were allowed to enter the secret base below, no one was allowed to set foot in the doctor's private laboratory, so they could only follow the AI Xiao Wu to the conference room to wait.
Xiao Wu was an artificial intelligence system researched by the doctor before the apocalypse. After the apocalypse, the doctor installed it in an underground experimental base to monitor and manage the secret laboratory.
It led people to the conference room and then disappeared, only to reappear at the elevator entrance in the blink of an eye. Its face, which should have been expressionless, showed a hint of confusion.
"Master, the low-level AI here seems to have detected you," the system reminded Chen Ke at this moment.
Chen Ke walked past a row of glass-enclosed laboratories, filled with humans covered in various test tubes and instruments. Hearing the system's words, his expression didn't change at all. "Then go and reason with him."
"Yes, Master."
Then, in less than a minute, the system reported to Chen Ke: "I've settled things with the master. I had a good talk with him and he's so happy he can't even speak."
"very good."
Chen Ke did not linger there and continued walking further in, where he sensed a trace of his kind.
The place that made him feel like he was one of their own was probably the place where that level-three zombie had been imprisoned.
Meanwhile, in a laboratory filled with various advanced experimental instruments, an old man stared at his computer screen with a frenzied expression, his eyes filled with ecstasy.
"Hahaha, I'm right, I'm right, I knew I was right! Only in this way can we wipe them all out! I'll wipe out the zombies right away! I'll become a hero, I'll definitely become a hero of humanity!"
A middle-aged man pushed open the door and entered. Upon hearing the old man's words, his face immediately lit up with excitement. "Really, teacher? You're on the right track? That way, we can definitely wipe out all the zombies?"
The old man saw the middle-aged man's face fall instantly. "Li Ruichun, let me tell you, don't you dare try anything funny this time. This is a matter of life and death for all mankind, more important than our lives!"
Li Ruichun smiled and said, "Teacher, what are you saying? Aren't I working so hard on these experiments for the sake of human development?"
"Huh? For the sake of human development? Don't think I don't know you've been secretly feeding zombies with evolved humans to stimulate their level-up. What are you planning to do? Obtain a level-three crystal core for research?"
At this point, the old man's tone became even more agitated, "I told Li Ruichun, now that my experiment is finished, from this moment on, I will absolutely not allow you to conduct such heinous experiments again!"
Li Ruichun pushed up his gold-rimmed glasses, a glint of light flashing in his eyes behind the lenses. "Really, teacher? You've really finished all your experiments?"
The old man smiled smugly, "Clang—"
But before he could finish speaking, a barely audible gunshot rang out.
The old man stared in disbelief at his chest, pierced by a bullet and bleeding profusely. "Ho ho! Li, Li...you dare..."
"Ha, what do I have to be afraid of? Teacher, if your experiment wasn't still unfinished, you would have gone to see your teacher's wife long ago when the apocalypse came."
"You, you—"
"Ah, yes, I also killed your wife, just so you could focus on your experiments without any distractions. How about that? Wasn't I very thoughtful of you?"
Upon hearing this, the old man's eyes bulged, his face contorted with rage, and he spat out a mouthful of blood. His hands, which had just tremblingly reached out to Li Ruichun, collapsed.
"Oh dear, I've really done something terribly wrong. How could I have angered my teacher to death?" Li Ruichun said hysterically, staring at the old man's corpse for a while before suddenly bursting into maniacal laughter: "Hahaha, isn't he a little resentful in death? That's right!"
"I work harder than anyone else, but you just can't see it. You won't give me a spot for direct admission, you won't give me good research projects, you won't give me anything!"
"This is what you deserve! This is what you owe me. Now open your eyes and see who your most capable and promising student really is!"
Li Ruichun's eyes shone brightly as he operated the computer while muttering to himself.
"You are indeed capable; your shamelessness is unmatched." A cold, mocking voice echoed in the empty laboratory.
Li Ruichun turned around abruptly, his face calm. "Who? How dare you sneak in here like this? You've got some nerve!"
Chen Ke strolled in through the door with his hands in his pockets, his eyes curiously surveying the experiment that was strictly off-limits to anyone, his expression as relaxed as a tourist visiting a museum.
"Who are you?" Li Ruichun became more alert the moment he saw Chen Ke; his intuition told him that this young man was no ordinary person.
Although no supernatural abilities can be sensed, it gives off a sense of unfathomable danger.
