Chapter 92 The Honest Older Brother in the Historical Fiction 2

Chen Zhi would come back from playing basketball at school every day, so the original owner would save food for him separately every night.

Chen Ke remembered the food the original owner had left in the cupboard and replied, "It's in the cupboard."

Unexpectedly, Chen Zhi immediately said, "Then brother, can you heat it up for me? I'm going to take a shower first, and I'll come back to eat after I'm done."

Chen Ke heard Chen Zhi fumbling for his clothes outside and leaving without even looking up.

It's terrible, really terrible. Chen Ke felt it would be difficult for him to live a simple and peaceful life in such a living environment.

The single room was converted into three small rooms. In reality, the conversion was just using curtains and wooden boards to separate them. The space was not only cramped and crowded, but also poorly ventilated. Chen Ke sat there for a while and his clothes were soaked with sweat.

The room was filled with all sorts of odds and ends. Chen Ke, Chen Zhi, and Chen Yu were the type who wouldn't even pick up a fallen broom, so don't expect them to tidy up their things. There was hardly any room to even step in the room.

Chen Ke got up and tidied up his things briefly. He noticed that the original owner had kept some of his old books. He picked one up at random, "Mechanical Applications," and began to read it thoughtfully.

When Chen Zhi returned after taking a shower, he saw no movement in the kitchen and assumed that his older brother had already warmed up his hands and feet. However, when he went inside, he found the wooden dining table empty.

"Brother, big brother."

Seeing that Chen Ke didn't respond, Chen Zhi dried his hair and went to Chen Ke's "room." He lifted the curtain and found Chen Ke reading a book. He looked surprised and asked, "Brother, what are you reading? Where's my food?"

Chen Ke didn't even look up. "Didn't I tell you it's in the cabinet?"

"Didn't I ask you to heat it up for me?"

Chen Ke finally raised his head. "Your hand is broken?"

Chen Zhi looked blank. "No, no."

"Then why don't you heat it up yourself?"

Chen Zhi: ""

When did his older brother become so good at roasting people?

Chen Zhi's stomach growled, and seeing that Chen Ke really didn't intend to heat up his food, he had no choice but to go himself.

Chen Zhi was reading comics while eating. When he finished and looked up, he realized it was already dark outside. He took two steps and walked to Chen Ke's door. "Brother, it's dark outside. Aren't you going out to look for Chen Yu?"

Chen Ke used the exact same tone as before, "What? Her leg is broken and she can't go home by herself?"

Chen Zhi: ""

Well, I guess his brother's gone crazy today; he's deliberately ignoring them.

Chen Zhi walked out of the compound gate with a flashlight. Chen Yu, who had been observing from a distance, immediately hid back in the corner. Hmph, he only came out to find her now. Let's see if she forgives him until she's angry enough!

Chen Yu waited smugly, arms crossed.

Chen Zhi shone his flashlight directly into Chen Yu's face, and Chen Yu cried out "Ah!" and quickly covered her eyes with her hands.

"What are you waiting here for? To feed the mosquitoes?"

"Chen Zhi? It's you?" Chen Yu lowered her hand to adjust to the light and looked behind Chen Zhi in disbelief.

Chen Zhi impatiently straightened Chen Yu's posture. "What are you looking at? Big brother hasn't come out yet. Are you coming back or not? If you're not coming back, I'm closing the door."

Chen Yu's eyes reddened again. It was so late and her older brother hadn't even come out to look for her. He really didn't love her anymore and wasn't worried about her at all.

"You crybaby, stay here and feed the mosquitoes!" Chen Zhi said, then walked away.

Chen Yu sniffed and reluctantly followed. Chen Zhi, her second brother, was completely different from her eldest brother. He would really close the door if he said he would, and he wouldn't care about her at all.

The two siblings entered the house and ran into Chen Ke, who was going out to the public bathhouse to take a shower.

"Hmph!" Chen Yu turned her head away, clearly sulking.

Chen Ke pretended not to see it and pointed to the bowl on the table at Chen Zhi, "Take it out to wash, don't leave it until morning."

Chen Zhi, who has never washed dishes before: ? ? ?

"Also, don't cut up the skirt on the floor to use as a rag. The dishcloth needs to be replaced."

Chen Yu: ? ? ?

Her skirt was still on the ground?

Chen Yu angrily ran over, picked up the skirt, and went back into the house.

Chen Zhi watched Chen Ke leave before rushing to Chen Yu's door, his voice filled with shock: "I'm telling you, my brother is really acting strange today. He actually asked me to wash the dishes!"

Chen Yu gave a mocking laugh, "Chen Zhi, you're sixteen years old already, what's wrong with washing a dish?"

"Chen Yu, don't be stubborn. If our eldest brother really abandons us, you'll be the one who suffers!"

Upon hearing this, Chen Yu's expression changed, and she said, "Why doesn't my older brother care about us? He's been supporting us ever since Mom and Dad died. Why is he suddenly abandoning us?"

Chen Zhi leaned against the door frame, looking like he knew a lot. "Let me tell you, it's because someone is going to find a wife for my older brother! They say we're a burden, so my older brother is acting strangely today. He's testing us to see if we can live on our own."

Hearing Chen Zhi's confident words, Chen Yu's eyes widened suddenly, still somewhat incredulous. "Where did you hear that? I've never heard of anyone talking about finding a wife for my older brother."

"Aunt Wang from across the street overheard them yesterday when I happened to pass by their door saying that my brother is so hardworking, it's not hard to find a wife, but we two are a burden."

“She’s the burden! Her whole family is a burden! We’re my brother’s only family, how can we be a burden!”

"That depends on what my brother thinks," Chen Zhi shrugged.

With a creak, Chen Ke pushed open the door and came in after taking a shower.

Chen Zhi quickly picked up the bowls on the table. "Brother, you're back after washing them? I was just about to wash the dishes."

"Okay, go ahead." Chen Ke nodded and went straight back to his room.

Chen Yu observed from behind the curtain. When she saw that Chen Ke really ignored her, a sense of panic flashed through her heart. Was her brother really going to abandon them in order to get married?

No, that's impossible. His brother promised to take good care of their parents before they passed away; it's impossible for him to suddenly abandon them.

My brother must have had a bad day at the factory, that's why he's acting so strangely. He'll be fine tomorrow.

Chen Yu comforted himself and went to sleep.

The next morning, Chen Ke opened his eyes in a bad mood, not only because he hadn't slept well in the sweltering heat the night before, but also because starting today, he would be replacing the original owner of this body as a hardworking textile worker in the textile factory.

Having traveled to so many parts of the world, this was the first one that Chen Ke found challenging.

After tidying up, Chen Ke left the "room," grabbed a toothbrush and towel, and went straight to wash up.

Almost everyone in the compound who had to go to work was up and about, some washing up, some cooking, some soothing their babies, some emptying chamber pots—it was noisy and bustling, full of the atmosphere of everyday life.

Chen Ke was brushing his teeth at the farthest point from the public restroom. The woman from yesterday was washing diapers for her grandson, pouring the water directly into the sink. But Chen Ke had just seen another woman washing dishes in that same sink…

"Chen Ke, you're only up today? You're usually cooking by now."

Chen Ke spat and nodded, saying while washing the cup, "I'll eat in the cafeteria from now on, and I won't get up so early anymore." The original owner had just died suddenly, and he didn't want to follow in his footsteps. Besides, he couldn't possibly get up early to make breakfast for others.
