Side Story 2: Like a Dream

I am a hybrid, a succubus and an elf...

I have never seen my father or mother since I was born; I am the product of their mistake.

I don't remember the specifics, but I heard that I was abandoned on the roadside and picked up by an old woman, who then raised me until I was three years old when I passed away from illness.

I began my journey of wandering the world. I named myself Lorrian, which didn't mean anything; it was just because I only knew these three characters. If I had been to school, perhaps I could have given myself a better-sounding name.

The slums of Silvermoon City are home to the largest number of mixed-race people on the continent, probably because succubi are a promiscuous and irresponsible race.

I resemble them yet I'm not. At least their mixed-race features aren't obvious, while my terrible pointed ears and tail are things they can't hide no matter what.

I was a child hated by everyone in the slums because of my ears. Sometimes I thought about cutting them off, but I was afraid of the pain. I didn't have money to buy medicine, and I was afraid of the pain.

Later, I made up my mind to leave Silvermoon City. I wanted to see the outside world. The old woman in the slums described the scenery of other major cities as beautiful. I didn't want to stay here and be bullied for the rest of my life.

Every time I tried to resist, I was beaten, so I decided to run away, to get as far away from them as possible, and to never see them again.

My first stop is Ascaria, the main city of humans. Grandma said it has the most prosperous districts, and the humans there are very rich.

I want to see what rich people are like.

However, my journey was a bit bumpy. Someone took pity on me and gave me a piece of bread. I was so hungry that I ate the bread in one go, and then I fainted. When I woke up, I was in the Colosseum.

Do you know what a gladiatorial arena is? It's a place where people fight tigers and lions for the amusement of nobles. Why do I know about it?

Because I was the one who fought the tiger.

Of course I can't beat a tiger, but I have a strong ability to recover, and I always manage to survive.

These days are too dark and hopeless; I want to escape.

Then I ran away.

There's no point in talking about the hardships I've faced. It's just that many times when I was on the verge of death, I thought to myself, "I haven't even had a full meal yet. At least let me eat my fill before I die."

I wandered all the way, but I never found the way to Ascaria.

Ascaria probably didn't want a half-blood like him either...

In the end, I don't know where I ended up. It was so cold in winter, and I had nothing.

What a pity, it probably won't survive this winter.

Before I fell unconscious on the snow, I was thinking that falling into the snow wouldn't hurt at all.

I was lucky to survive. I dragged my ailing body forward and saw them enjoying each other's happiness and family bliss.

I can't stop feeling jealous. Why can't it be me? Why can't I be one of these people?

...

No one helped him this winter when he was 13.

He died in the snow.

Startled awake from a dream, Lorrian frantically seeks confirmation of the reality of her life.

He hugged Ye Jiu tightly, the real touch bringing him peace. "I didn't die that year, I met you..."

Ye Jiu was sleeping soundly when he suddenly woke her up. Hearing these words, she was even more confused. She found a comfortable position in Luo Rui'an's arms. "Had a nightmare? Go back to sleep, I'm here."

Lorrian's heart calmed down immediately; what he needed was right there in his arms.

He pressed close to Ye Jiu's back and gently placed a kiss on her back. "Okay, goodnight."
