It was a boundless sea.
A silver dragon lay quietly on the seabed of a small island, its eyes half-closed. With each breath, it stirred up shallow currents on the seabed. Under its restrained dragon might, a few sea spirits played around its body without noticing.
The calm of the sea was shattered when a child suddenly fell into the water.
The elves scattered in all directions. The silver dragon lifted its eyelids and its meandering tail swept idly across the sand and stones on the seabed. An undercurrent surged up, carrying the child who had fallen into the water towards the surface.
Meeting someone is fate. The Dragon God never has any extra kindness to go around saving people, but if he meets someone who is clearly not yet old enough to die, he will lend a hand.
However, things took a little beyond what was expected.
The child who had fallen into the water sensed the unusual flow of the seawater and suddenly looked down, whereupon a dragon with a body of pure silver light came into view.
The next moment, the child was thrown ashore by the current.
For the Dragon God, saving a child living on an island was merely a trivial event in the grand scheme of his life. But for the child, witnessing such unimaginable creatures was a miracle.
From then on, a child appeared on the island's shore, rain or shine, who would come every day to shout and yell at the sea without fail.
He didn't know the creature's name, so he assumed it was a sea god. He believed his life had been saved by the sea god, while others wouldn't believe a child's words.
The sea spirits carried the child's cries to the Dragon God's ears, but the indifferent Dragon God never responded.
Year after year, year after year.
Many, many years have passed, and the children on the island have gradually grown into handsome young men capable of sailing their own boats out to sea.
He rolled up his trousers, dressed in animal fur and clothes woven from special tree branches found on the island, and leaped off his boat into the sea.
The island's inhabitants both revere and depend on the sea. They use sturdy boats to go out to sea to fish for food to sustain themselves, but they never dare to rashly encroach on the ocean.
Even the most experienced swimmers wouldn't dare to dive that deep.
The boy, however, persisted in diving down. He knew what kind of wondrous things existed in the seabed, and he inexplicably believed that the gods of the sea would protect him.
This inexplicable confidence comes without any reason.
But when he couldn't hold his breath any longer, and seawater filled his mouth and nose, yet he still couldn't float to the surface, the silver figure that had appeared in his dreams countless times actually appeared before him, and the boy couldn't help but grin and reveal a hearty smile.
That wondrous, beautiful, and majestic creature looked at him indifferently with its pale golden eyes. Its tightly closed mouth was as tall as him, and the horns on its head gleamed with a beautiful white light. Four claws grew on its slender body.
With a casual flick of its tail, the silver dragon manipulated the seawater, engulfing the reckless and audacious boy and pulling him to the surface.
However, the weak humans had already fallen unconscious from such torment.
On a secluded rocky outcrop on the edge of the island, when the boy awoke, he saw the enormous body of that wondrous and magnificent creature coiled up on the rocks, occupying a large area, while he lay in the empty space where the creature's body was coiled.
"Great and wondrous sea god, I have seen you again. Did you sense my sincerity and mercifully come to see your admirer?"
As the boy spoke, he knelt excitedly and gazing up at the silver dragon's head, his heart surging with emotion, and he couldn't help but sigh, "You are so indifferent. No matter how much I begged for your mercy, you never looked at me... But I have seen you again after all."
The silver dragon suddenly stood up and plunged into the sea amidst a wave, disappearing without a trace.
"No! Great sea god, you have not listened to the plea of your admirers, why have you abandoned me like this?" The boy excitedly tried to go back into the water, but the seawater surged and could not even submerge his feet.
He was rejected by the sea.
The Dragon God's ruthlessness exceeded his imagination.
His family found him, and the boy told them what had happened, only to be met with ridicule.
"If he—the great being you speak of—truly exists, then aren't you, who dare to presume to gain his attention, utterly shameless and laughable?"
“No, you don’t understand. I can feel it. My soul is guiding me closer to him. This feeling arose in my heart the first time I saw him. I can’t control it, and I don’t want to control it. Even if I lose my life, even if he really won’t see my humble and insignificant existence, nothing can shake me.”
The boy declared with unwavering conviction: "It—that feeling—burns within my soul, making me vibrant, making me meaningful. Even if the end result is futile? So what? My life, as insignificant as dust, is still fighting for my dreams, just like yours!"
"If this is what you hope for, then we await the day you reach the other side of your dreams."
The sea spirit mimicked the boy's words perfectly in the silver dragon's ear. The dragon god, who had not fallen into slumber, watched quietly, something seeming to flash in his majestic and indifferent eyes.
Time passed quietly, and the boy grew into a young man. He still tried to communicate with the sea spirits as always, but unable to enter the water to find them, he had no other choice.
The storms receded from him, the tsunamis avoided him, and schools of fish leaped into his boat on their own. He knew it was the work of the sea god, so he said to the sea, "Why do you do this? I mean, you take care of me and protect me, yet you won't even see me. You know perfectly well how insignificant my needs are, yet you refuse to grant them. What good are more food or a better environment? Do you know how much pain I suffer?"
