34. Artist Dad 1
"Your father is an artist."
This was the phrase Cheng Ye's mother said most often, and it was also the phrase Cheng Ye hated the most. When he was young, he had many fantasies and hopes because of this phrase. Now, it was just a joke. The person had never appeared, and who he was or what he was like had nothing to do with him, Cheng Ye. Perhaps he hadn't accumulated enough good karma in his previous life. Not only had he been without a father since childhood, but his mother passed away during his senior year of high school. He chose not to continue his studies because, even if he had been admitted to university, he wouldn't have had the money to pay.
Cheng Ye was awakened early in the morning by a knock on the door. He had slept in too late the previous night, and being woken up soon after was a bad mood. He hid under the covers and tried not to pay attention, but the knocking was persistent, determined to force him to open the door. Cheng Ye had no choice but to get out of bed in frustration.
"Who is it?" It definitely wasn't the landlord. The landlord would never knock on the door like that. She would just bang on the door and yell, 'Cheng Ye, pay the rent!'
The door to the house was made of stainless steel, and the bolt was a thumb-thick iron nub. It made a sharp sound when it opened and closed. Cheng Ye opened the door and was stunned. A man, dressed in a blue-gray Taoist robe and a bun, appeared to be about thirty years old and stood outside. Cheng Ye had never seen such a handsome man before. He had handsome features and fair, delicate skin. His bun was done in a casual, Taoist style, and his messy hair draped around his ears, making him look unusually lively. Not to mention, he exuded a uniquely ethereal and handsome air.
"Excuse me, is this the Cheng Ye family?" The voice was ethereal and pleasant.
Cheng Ye: "Uh, is he" a celebrity? Why are you looking for him? "You are?"
"Hello, I'm your father, Cheng Jiu." Cheng Jiu answered seriously.
Huh? What did he say? Cheng Ye glanced at Cheng Jiu with a look of astonishment and said earnestly, "Don't be afraid of doctors." Then he slammed the door shut.
Cheng Jiu tilted his head and blinked in confusion. Why did they close the door?
Cheng Ye closed the door, poured himself a glass of water and took a sip. His mood became even worse. No one would be in a good mood if he met a lunatic early in the morning, even though this lunatic was very good-looking.
"Dong Dong Dong" The very rhythmic knocking sound rang again. Cheng Ye closed his eyes irritably. What on earth did this lunatic want to do? Cheng Ye sat on the sofa for a long time. Listening to the incessant knocking sound outside, Cheng Ye had to get up again to open the door.
Cheng Ye looked impatient.
He said: "What on earth do you want to do?" Are all the scammers nowadays so shameless? Is it worth it for a poor guy like him who has no money or power to be defrauded?
Cheng Jiu: "I'm Cheng Jiu, your father." He said the lines with an innocent look on his face.
Haha, Cheng Ye laughed angrily and said, "I'm still your grandfather. Get out of here or I'll beat you up." A man who looks only a few years older than me dares to say he is my father. Has the liar's method become so stupid? Do you want me to give you a stupid award?
Cheng Jiu was confused for a moment, frowned and said: "You are not my grandfather." I am your father.
Cheng Ye snorted, "Your sister," "Are you stupid or am I stupid?"
Cheng Jiu said slowly: "Neither of them is stupid."
Cheng Ye: ...
Fuck, Cheng Ye cursed in his heart, and his voice could not help but increase: "I don't have any money for you to cheat. I'm so poor that even thieves are too lazy to patronize me, so please leave now."
Cheng Jiu understood what Cheng Ye meant and said slowly: "Why do you think I'm a liar? I'm not a liar, I'm your father."
Cheng Ye was really addicted to acting. He crossed his arms and said, "Okay, since you say you are my father, what evidence do you have?" Usually, scammers should have a bunch of work 'props', which are specially used for daily 'investment'.
Cheng Jiu took off the tattered backpack, took out a letter from it, and said, "This is a letter your mother Cheng Xiaoxiu sent me. She asked me to come and see you." Then he handed it to Cheng Ye.
"Oh," Cheng Ye was speechless again. "My mother passed away almost two years ago. Why would she send you a letter?" It seemed like he was a novice and his research wasn't thorough enough. Of course, if he had done more research, he wouldn't have targeted him. However, he still took the letter and opened it.
The general meaning of the letter is: I gave birth to a son for you, and now I am dying, so I will leave the son to you from now on.
This dog-gnawed handwriting seems to be very similar to my mother's, but do you think I will believe it? Naive.
"Bang" the iron door was closed again.
This time, Cheng Jiu didn't knock on the door again. He frowned in annoyance and thought, this son is a bit too defensive. Then, he sat cross-legged at the door, looking like he had no intention of leaving. Now that he had found his son, he could afford to wait.
Cheng Ye returned to the house and ate and drank as usual. He didn't hear any knock on the door. He thought that the liar had probably given up and soon forgot about the matter.
Until the afternoon, I received a call from the landlord, who yelled, "Cheng Ye! Is the person at your door your relative? Letting him sit at the door is affecting our building.
"If he lives with you, remember to pay for his water and electricity bills."
What? That person is still here? Cheng Ye hung up the phone and angrily opened the iron gate.
Damn, he really didn’t leave!
When the man saw him open the door, he slowly stood up and looked at him with sparkling eyes. Cheng Ye gritted his teeth and said, "If you don't leave, I'll call the police."
Apparently, his threat did not scare the man in front of him, because he found that the man's eyes became brighter, and he only heard him say: "Can we go to the police station to find out our father-son relationship?" He was very distressed and depressed that his son did not believe him after he finally found him.
I believed your lies! Don't say we have nothing to do with each other. Even if we didn't go to the police station to check, we went to the hospital for an appraisal.
Seeing Cheng Jiu's relentless attitude, and the other tenants in the building looking over here, was this a zoo watching monkeys? Cheng Ye compromised and reluctantly gave up his seat, saying, "You come in first." He was a grown man and didn't need to be afraid of a liar. He was more afraid of the gossipy women in the building.
Cheng Ye sat on the only sofa in the room, motioned Cheng Jiu to sit on the stool opposite, and then spoke: "Tell me, how did you, who looks only a few years older than me, give birth to a son as old as me?"
After hearing what he said, Cheng Jiu suddenly realized that his son had misunderstood him because of his appearance, so Cheng Ye took out his ID card and said, "I just look young, but I'm actually 38 years old." Then he put the ID card on the table in front of Cheng Ye.
Cheng Ye picked up the ID card suspiciously and looked at it, then put it down. ID cards can be forged and are not enough to serve as evidence.
"Then tell me, how did you and my mother meet?"
Cheng Jiu hesitated for a moment and said, "Your mother and I have only been together for a month."
Cheng Ye motioned for him to continue.
"Actually, this is what happened..."
Cheng Jiu is an orphan raised by an old Taoist priest. When he was 18, his master gave him 800 yuan and asked him to go down the mountain to experience city life. However, he was swindled out of his money as soon as he came down the mountain. At this time, he met Cheng Ye's mother, Cheng Xiaoxiu.
…
Cheng Ye was speechless after hearing this. This was a ridiculous story of a 28-year-old woman cheating on an 18-year-old boy. Looking at the aggrieved man, Cheng Ye pinched her forehead. That frivolous and lying woman could really do such a thing.
"And what happened next?"
"I waited for her in the rental house for a month, and when I had spent all my money, I returned to the mountains.
Don’t let me leave the mountain.”
The accusatory tone in his voice made Cheng Ye very embarrassed. Of course you can't wait for her, because she ran to the next city to avoid you.
Guess how his mother told him the story of her and his father?
Your father and I met on a beautiful spring day, our encounter stemming from a beautiful woman saving a beautiful man. … That's how we fell in love, and later on, we had you. This bead is a token of our love. The day your father found out I was pregnant with you, he personally carved a leaf on it, saying it was your name. You see, even your name is proof of our love. But you know, your father is a very talented artist, and he can't let it go unnoticed. He's gone in search of poetry and distant places, and one day he'll come back to find us. Cheng Ye was exhausted. His mother was not only unruly but also loved making up stories. She had fooled him countless times since he was a child.
In contrast, this man's words were more believable. Of course, that was if he wasn't a liar. And most importantly, he felt a strange feeling when he looked at the man across from him. Those eyes looked exactly like his own, forcing him to admit that this man might really be his father.
"I received a letter from your mother almost two years ago, but when I went to the address your mother wrote, you had already moved away and I couldn't find you." He felt very sad, as if he had been abandoned again.
Awkward, Cheng Ye was really embarrassed. He did move very quickly. Tadpole, bah, it was the frog that found the tadpole. What a wonderful fate.
"A month ago, my master passed away. I returned to the mountain to take care of his funeral. Then the village chief took the temple back. He said the land belonged to his village."
Well, poor homeless guy.
Cheng Ye, exhausted from listening to his parents' fateful story, drank a large glass of cold water. He needed some quiet time. After a long pause, he said, "Do you remember what the token of love you gave my mother was?" Just in case, Cheng Ye checked again.
"Remember." Cheng Ye pulled at his collar and took out the bead hanging around his neck.
Cheng Ye took the bead and looked at it carefully for a long time. He basically believed what the man in front of him said, because he also had one exactly the same one, which was now hanging around his neck with a rope. This strange material was quite uncommon. He had foolishly checked a lot of information, but had not found a second such bead.
Cheng Ye was helpless: "We will go for a personal appraisal tomorrow. You can stay here until the results come out." What else can he do? He kept complaining in his heart, why did his mother leave him such a trouble.
Did you admit that he was my son? Cheng Jiu was a little happy: "Where should I sleep?"
He smiled and said, "Sleeping on the floor." The place he rents now only has one bedroom and a living room. Do you still want him to give up the room?
"I'm hungry." He hadn't eaten anything before coming here.
… Let’s just throw this man out. Maybe he heard that he had no father since he was a child, so he pretended to be his father to get food, drink and shelter! No matter how darkly he complained in his heart, Cheng Ye still took two loaves of bread for Cheng Jiu.
