But the person in his arms didn't react at all for a long time.
He was terrified. He was afraid that the past would repeat itself, afraid that she would never open her eyes again. The thought filled him with panic: "Xiao Yan, Xiao Yan!"
Bai Yan herself didn't know how long she had been tossed and turned. She had only been asleep for a short while when she heard someone calling her name in a way that sounded like they were calling her soul.
Only when a drop of liquid slid down her face did Bai Yan open her eyes, meeting Huo Jin's handsome face, which was filled with joy yet still shed tears.
"It's so early in the morning—" Seeing the bright moon hanging high outside, she reached out and touched his face again, saying helplessly, "Why are you crying in the middle of the night?"
Huo Jin hugged her tightly, his voice trembling slightly: "No matter how I called you, you wouldn't get up. I thought you..."
Bai Yan pondered for a moment, then gently hit him again: "Don't you know how long you've been crazy? I'm only awake now because I have superhuman strength and talent."
She laughed again: "You were my antidote first, and now I've become your medicine. Don't you think we're a match made in heaven?"
Huo Jin frowned, released her from his embrace, and looked at her while holding her shoulders.
When the emperor gets angry, it's quite frightening: "Why are you so disobedient, child? Didn't I say I wouldn't see you? Why did you have to barge in? What if I hurt you?"
Bai Yan wasn't afraid of him at all. She reached out and pinched his ears with both hands: "I want to ask you what you mean? You didn't tell me about something as important as being sick?"
After a moment, she gently rubbed his face and hugged him softly, saying, "I'm here for you. Don't be afraid of whatever illness you have. We'll treat it together."
"Let me tell you a secret, I studied medicine under a very powerful master a long time ago. I'm very skilled now, a legendary doctor of our time!"
Her eyes lit up: "Do you believe me or not?"
Before Huo Jin could speak, there was a gentle knock on the door. The old eunuch glanced at the two of them apologetically and said, "Your Majesty, the Empress Dowager has brought you medicine to treat your headache."
After saying this, the old eunuch hurriedly retreated, not daring to look at the scene inside the room.
"The Empress Dowager?" Bai Yan naturally recalled the words her elder sister had spoken when she entered the palace. She looked at Huo Jin: "Does she also know about your illness?"
Huo Jin nodded.
Bai Yan's gaze darkened slightly, and her brows furrowed: "You have a close relationship with Empress Dowager Chu?"
Huo Jin nodded, naturally feeling close to his elder sister-in-law.
Bai Yan pursed her lips slightly: "Are you thinking that after you fall seriously ill, you will pave the way for Empress Dowager Chu and her son, so that Huo Yanjun can inherit your throne?"
Huo Jin didn't understand, but he still nodded.
But Bai Yan sneered: "So the rumors that Empress Dowager Chu and you were childhood sweethearts, and that Huo Yanjun is your biological son, are all true?"
Huo Jin was stunned at first; the rumor was so outrageous that even he was shocked!
Bai Yan continued to sneer: "I knew it. No wonder you wouldn't admit our relationship that day at the Bai residence, in front of Bai Chong and Gu Cheng'an. You only said that I was your junior and you were my Ninth Uncle. So you were afraid that the person you cared about would misunderstand?"
"Fine, from now on you can go find your Empress Dowager Chu, and I'll go live my life on my lonely path—" Before Bai Yan could finish speaking, Huo Jin pulled her into his arms and silenced her with his lips and tongue.
After the kiss, he took her hand again: "Don't say things like that, like cutting ties completely. It hurts me to hear it."
Huo Jin said, "I have never had another love interest; you are the only one here."
He placed her hand on his heart, where his burning heart pounded. "I always felt like I was waiting for someone. The first time I saw you, my heart was pounding like crazy. I knew I had found you."
Bai Yan's nose tingled with a little sadness, and she lowered her eyes to hide her tears: "I'll consider you pass."
"But where did you hear such outrageous rumors?" Huo Jin frowned, wanting to know who was talking badly about him behind his back. "Although my sister-in-law and I are not that far apart in age, Huo Yanjun is already fifteen years old. Even if I could have given birth to him at thirteen, I was still fighting hard with the soldiers on the border at that time."
Bai Yan couldn't possibly betray her own sister, so she deliberately changed the subject: "Then why won't you admit our relationship?"
Huo Jin touched his nose somewhat guiltily. Bai Yan guessed what was going on from his expression: "I'm afraid you won't live long, and I'm afraid it will ruin my reputation so I won't be able to get married in the future?"
Huo Jin didn't dare to nod. Bai Yan sneered and looked at him again: "You are the emperor, yet you have this kind of illness and no imperial physicians have come to consult you. You don't want to live, do you?"
Huo Jin lowered his gaze, not daring to look at her... He was living in pain, every day was painful, so how could he want to continue living?
Bai Yan felt both heartache and anger: "Since Ninth Uncle is so considerate of me, why don't I plan for a husband for myself in advance?"
"You don't need to treat my illness anymore. You'll always have a future planned for me, right? Don't worry, I'll get married and have children. Although I'll be sad when you leave, I might not forget you in ten or eight years..."
"Stop talking!" Huo Jin's heart clenched at the thought of what might have happened. He looked at Bai Yan with utter pitifulness: "Xiao Yan, I'll get better soon. I'll seek out the best doctors in the world. Don't leave me, I was wrong..."
He was terribly wrong; he couldn't make plans for her future.
He simply couldn't imagine her marrying and having children with another man; the mere thought of it made him want to grab a knife and kill her.
Bai Yan sighed softly. He attempted suicide because of the pain of his illness. How could she bear to torment him? But she had to awaken his will to live.
In some situations, human will is more effective than medical treatment; she can become his will.
Bai Yan gently lifted his face: "You are not allowed to hide anything from me. You have to tell me everything I ask you."
