“What murder? What about the emperor being subject to the same laws as commoners?” Zhong Rentao frowned deeply, his tone seemingly displeased: “This is the Republic of China now. The law is in place. Let alone my family, even if I, Zhong Rentao, violated the law, I would not even flinch if I were arrested or executed.”
He then said to Mu Jinzhi in a deep voice, "But if you have no evidence and have only heard some unfounded rumors, why are you spouting such nonsense in this kind of setting!"
"Then I'll have to ask your father how he disciplined you!"
Mu Jinzhi turned to look at Bai Yan. She hated this woman, hated how she had made her feel so awkward and uncomfortable before.
However, Mu Jinzhi did not notice any panic or fear on Bai Yan's face.
This discovery made her feel a little upset, and she looked at Zhong Rentao and said, "Uncle Zhong, Jinzhi wouldn't make things up without reason. Of course I have evidence."
Zhong Rentao looked at Bai Yan with some concern: "Yan'er, this..."
Bai Yan's expression remained calm and composed as she raised an eyebrow at Mu Jinzhi: "Then please present your evidence, Miss Mu."
Zhong Yunsheng's gaze fell on Bai Yan's beautiful profile, and his brows furrowed slightly.
Mu Jinzhi gave her a cold look and ordered, "Old lady, you may come in now."
Immediately afterwards, a young couple helped an elderly man with a white beard into the banquet hall.
The old man looked at Bai Yan with eyes full of anger and hatred, then questioned, "Bai Yan, do you still remember me?"
Do you still remember these two children?
Bai Yan glanced at the group of people who had entered, then chuckled softly, "Of course I remember, Uncle."
Her gaze then fell upon the young boy and girl: "Bai Nianwei, Bai Niantang." These were Chen Xiuer and Bai Jiye's two children. She gently raised her lips: "It's been over a year since I last saw you, and you've both lost a lot of weight."
"You beast!" The uncle slammed his cane on the ground. "How dare you call these two children by their names?!"
Bai Niantang was at the most impulsive age. He clenched his fists, roared, and was about to rush towards Bai Yan.
Before the security personnel for the party arrived, the people sent by the school and the laboratory took the lead in blocking Bai Yan and stopping Bai Niantang.
"You murderer! You killed my parents, I'm going to kill you! I'm going to kill you!"
Bai Niantang's eyes were bloodshot as he roared that he wanted to avenge his parents.
Bai Nianwei, on the other hand, was crying weakly. At the age of ten or so, girls are usually more mature than boys. She went forward to comfort the agitated Bai Niantang, and then looked at Bai Yan with choked sobs: "Aunt, you are too cruel!"
"You say my brother and I have lost weight? How could we not? You killed our parents! You burned down our house and stole our property!"
"If it weren't for the clan's help during this time, we would have starved to death!"
"How could you be so cruel? We're all family. Haven't my parents treated you well? My mother may be fierce, but she's taken care of your food, clothing, and shelter. How could you be so heartless as to kill her?"
Bai Nianwei was initially putting on an act, but when she recalled the days she had spent wandering and displaced, tears streamed down her face, and she looked at Bai Yan with hatred in her eyes.
A child who is only a teenager, thin and frail, crying like this naturally evokes sympathy.
Bai Yan showed no sympathy. She simply asked, "Since your father and mother have been so good to us, why would I kill them?"
"Enough!" Mu Jin stepped forward. "Bai Yan, you've done something wrong and don't know how to repent, yet you still want to rub salt into these two children's wounds?"
She walked over and gently patted Bai Nianwei's shoulder: "Little sister, don't be afraid. I'm here today. Whatever grievances you've suffered, I'll help you get justice!"
Bai Nianwei's voice was hoarse from crying, and a flash of resentment crossed her eyes: "You murdered people, and you even sold everything in the house! That was what Grandpa left for the Bai family, for the Bai clan!"
That's all their family's money!
She then pointed at Bai Yan: "Why did you kill my parents? It's because they discovered Yuan Qiu Niang's secret! Once it's exposed, she will be immediately expelled from the Bai family!"
Bai Yan's gaze turned cold. "Oh, my mother's secret? What secret? Tell me."
Bai Nianwei bit her lip, her expression a mixture of shame and anger: "You...you people did such a thing, and you still have the nerve to ask me?"
The uncle stepped forward, leaning on his cane, and looked at Bai Yan with a gloomy gaze: "Nianwei is a girl, it's embarrassing to say. Fine, let this old man say it!"
His dim, yellowish eyes were filled with vicious malice: "Yuan Qiu Niang is a slut, she's cheating on me with another man!"
"Jiye and Xiuer discovered her illicit affair. Fearing exposure, you two conspired with the adulterer to burn the couple to death!"
As he spoke, his uncle burst into tears: "He even sold off all of Zhizhong's properties and ran away with the money."
"That land was left to our Bai clan by Zhizhong! It was the property he left to his heirs, and you two vile women have squandered it all!"
This is what pained my uncle the most.
The story is half true and half false, and the false part only concerns reputation. It can both condemn Bai Yan and her daughter for murder and give Zhong Rentao a reason not to dwell on the past.
Upon hearing this, Zhong Rentao showed a surprised expression: "Such a thing really happened? Brother Bai is so devoted to his sister-in-law, he hasn't taken a single concubine, how could she do such a thing?"
"I don't believe it!"
Bai Jingye spoke up at this moment: "General, what my uncle said is true!"
He took off his glasses and put on an extremely sad expression: "My great-uncle traveled all the way to Xicheng before I learned the truth."
"Only then did I learn that they had already run off to the West City with their lover, who then absconded with their money. Otherwise, why would they have dared to risk everything to seek refuge with the commander after killing someone?"
Bai Jingye said, looking at Bai Yan with resentment, "The police have already caught the adulterer, and his confession is still at the police station!"
"A life for a life, that's only right! Both she and her daughter should pay with their lives!"
Bai Jingye's acting was seven parts acting and three parts acting. Bai Yan and her daughter stole money from his family, making it difficult for him to move around. If it weren't for his desire to curry favor with the Zhong family, he would have killed them in secret long ago!
The uncle's gaze swept over everyone in the hall. He took two steps forward and knelt down with a thud: "You are all important people, and I didn't want to disturb you. But my nephew died tragically, leaving behind only his two children. No one is looking after them. I'm already halfway to my grave. Even if it costs me my life, I have to bring them here to seek justice!"
The old man was crying miserably; he was an elder of the Bai clan. Zhong Rentao sighed and quickly went over to help him up: "Old man, please get up. You are my brother Bai's elder, and we have a life-or-death friendship. I cannot accept your kneeling before me."
