Wei Meng's mother slumped into a chair, stunned.
The old lady glanced at her with disdain, then firmly signed the liability waiver with trembling fingers.
"Save the child!"
Looking at all this, Wei Meng's mother felt only sorrow, yet she was powerless against fate. She covered her face and sobbed.
The old lady sneered twice, her thin body standing straight at the operating room door, like a guardian deity protecting the Wei family, or like a mountain pressing down on Wei Meng's mother's heart.
Jing Se's fate was thus decided by unrelated people.
On the operating table.
Jing Se could feel her life force draining away. She tried to speak, but found herself unable to utter a single word.
"I don't want to die! I haven't seen my child yet, and what about Wei Meng? What will happen to him?"
No one heard her.
A nurse approached her and tried to call out to her.
Jing Se's consciousness blurred; she could hear nothing, only a tear about to fall from the corner of her eye...
...
The military exercise was held near the border, and the enemy country was on high alert.
The atmosphere at the border has always been tense and oppressive.
Wei Meng looked at the map, but his mind wandered.
He remembered that today was his due date.
Jing Se is probably in the hospital now. Her mother and grandmother always dote on her and would never let anything happen to her. Has their child already been born?
Seeing the barely suppressed smile on his lips, the deputy commander teased, "Your wife must be giving birth by now, right?"
"Who knows?" Wei Meng tried to pretend to be nonchalant, but he couldn't hide his joy at all.
"Haha, look at you, you're grinning from ear to ear. If your son is born and joins the army, you'll be fourth-generation military families, right?"
"Um!"
"Impressive, impressive! Don't get too excited and forget the important thing. We're here to show off our power."
"Don't worry, it won't be delayed!" Wei Meng's expression turned serious. His grandfather had died at the hands of the enemy country, how could he forget the hatred between his family and his country?
"Bang! Bang! Bang!" Gunshots pierced the night sky.
Wei Meng felt a chill run down his spine; there shouldn't be any gunshots at this moment.
Military exercises are strictly controlled at every stage; such gunfire is highly unusual.
Not long after, a report came: "The enemy country falsely accused our soldiers of crossing the border and opened fire without cause, killing three of our soldiers. Now is the time for you to protect the country. The Central Military Commission has decided that we must retaliate! Resist firmly! Soldiers, the time has come to defend our homeland!"
"yes!"
A resounding voice echoed through the army.
Countless people were busy in the army, and gunfire spread from one side to the other. Neither side crossed the border; they were both firing at each other. A larger-scale war was brewing and could break out at any moment.
Linghu Lan and Jing Xing were also on standby at the front line. Upon receiving the notification, they immediately organized their troops to participate in the counterattack.
The war has begun.
Countless people fell, and countless others took their place. No one retreated, no one deserted. In the face of war, everyone showed their true colors as men.
The war lasted fifteen days. Although it did not cross the border, it was still brutal. The fighting spread from the east to the west along the border, almost day and night.
Before long, the international community intervened to mediate, and the battlefield between the two countries shifted from the border to the negotiating table.
The war is over, but the casualties remain.
Jingxing looked at the list of casualties with a heavy heart. Those were his brothers who had shared hardships and life and death with him, but now they were separated by death.
More casualty lists were gradually compiled, and his slender fingers traced the names one by one until they stopped on one name:
Wei Meng!
