Chapter 94 The Beautiful, Gold-Digging School Beauty—I Do
In the new semester, Yao Yao and Xiao Yanzhi continued their loving relationship, their sweet and affectionate interactions making others envious. However, their peaceful life was far from tranquil on the other side.
One sunny afternoon in early March, Jiang Chen set off from his dormitory to the library, intending to borrow some professional books.
Jiang Chen chose a quiet path that led past a pavilion on the lake, where two people were already standing.
There was a man and a woman, and the woman was Xu Shuangshuang, whom he knew.
The two stopped talking as they saw Jiang Chen approaching.
Xu Shuangshuang and Jiang Chen met eyes, and both felt a sense of awkwardness, as if they were reuniting after a long separation.
Jiang Chen and Xu Shuangshuang were high school classmates and had a somewhat ambiguous relationship in the past. These things had already been spread all over the forum, and Wang Yuzhou naturally knew about them as well.
Neither Xu Shuangshuang nor Jiang Chen spoke, but Wang Yuzhou, seemingly unaware of the situation, spoke first: "Is Senior Jiang going to the library?"
Jiang Chen shifted his gaze to the man wearing black-rimmed glasses, who looked honest and unassuming, and said in a low voice, "Hmm."
Wang Yuzhou smiled and continued, "Xu and I are blocking the way. I'll move over here. Senior Jiang, you can go now."
The pavilion wasn't large; it could only accommodate two people walking side by side at most, and three people would be a bit crowded. Wang Yuzhou moved a little closer to Xu Shuangshuang.
Jiang Chen nodded, glanced at Xu Shuangshuang who hadn't spoken, pondered for a few seconds, and asked, "What's going on here?"
Wang Yuzhou scratched his head and said embarrassedly, "I was confessing my feelings to Xu, and right after I finished, Senior Jiang came over."
Jiang Chen looked at Xu Shuangshuang, who was sitting opposite him with her head down. Apart from the initial eye contact, she hadn't looked at him once more.
A man's magnetic voice rang out: "I apologize for disturbing you, junior. You can't force matters of the heart. Confessing your feelings is just a one-sided expression of your desire. If the girl doesn't agree, you can't force her."
Wang Yuzhou said dejectedly, "Senior, don't worry, I won't make things difficult for Xu. I like her, so naturally I wouldn't want to put her in a difficult position, much less make her sad. I promise..."
"I do!" Xu Shuangshuang interrupted Wang Yuzhou, her usually soft voice unusually strong at this moment.
"What did you say?" Two other male voices rang out simultaneously, their expressions a mixture of shock, anger, joy, and bewilderment, all intertwined in those four words.
Xu Shuangshuang looked up, her cold gaze sweeping over Jiang Chen before turning to Wang Yuzhou, and said firmly, "Wang Yuzhou, I said I'm willing to be your girlfriend."
Ignoring Jiang Chen's fiery gaze, she repeated herself once more. Having said it once, repeating it a second time was easy.
In front of Jiang Chen, Wang Yuzhou excitedly hugged Xu Shuangshuang and said, "Shuangshuang, I'm so happy. I fell in love with you the first time I saw you. I will definitely treat you well in the future!"
Xu Shuangshuang was held in Wang Yuzhou's arms, with Jiang Chen standing behind him. Their eyes were fixed on each other, neither of them giving way.
Jiang Chen felt as if he was suffocating. His lips were tightly pursed, his face was ashen, and the veins on his forehead were bulging. He couldn't believe what he was seeing, and he couldn't believe that Xu Shuangshuang was in a relationship with someone else!
She could have lived happily ever after with him if she had just waited a little longer, so why did she stubbornly refuse to wait? How could she have fallen for this ordinary man who was so much shorter and less attractive than her?
At this moment, Jiang Chen was in a state of utter confusion.
Xu Shuangshuang's heart was also filled with mixed emotions. When she saw the intense pain in Jiang Chen's eyes, she felt a pang of regret, regretting her impulsive words. She looked away, her eyes lowered; the situation no longer allowed her to back out.
Seeing Xu Shuangshuang's attitude, Jiang Chen's anger reached its peak. He turned around and left. He knew he couldn't stay there any longer; he was afraid he would lose control of his emotions.
Wang Yuzhou noticed that Jiang Chen had left before he released Xu Shuangshuang. He saw that her eyes were red and said with heartache, "Shuangshuang, don't worry, I will definitely treat you well in the future!"
Xu Shuangshuang remained silent, her eyes fixed on the lake outside the pavilion, her thoughts drifting elsewhere.
*
After the start of the semester, Yao Yao chose to move back to the dormitory, and Xiao Yanzhi did not stop her. He resumed his daily routine of bringing breakfast to his girlfriend.
On Saturday morning, Xiao Yanzhi drove to the school to pick up Yao Yao. The two planned to travel to a neighboring province. This week, Yao Yao had contacted her part-time job boss in advance and set aside two days to travel with her boyfriend.
Not long after the car started moving, Yao Yao's phone rang.
Yao Yao's face immediately darkened upon glancing at the caller ID. Sensing the tense atmosphere, Xiao Yanzhi quickly scanned his girlfriend's unfriendly expression and asked, "Whose call is that?"
Yao Yao frowned, her tone irritated: "My uncle's."
Uncle? Thinking of Yao Yao's background, Xiao Yanzhi immediately understood what role her uncle played in her life.
Xiao Yanzhi: "If you don't want to answer, then don't answer."
Yao Yao shook her head and answered the call as it rang for the last time. To avoid disturbing Xiao Yanzhi's driving, she didn't turn on the speakerphone.
Yu Gengsheng said with dissatisfaction, "Why are you taking so long to answer the phone?"
Yao Yao said in a calm tone, "I was busy just now, Uncle. Is there anything I can help you with?"
Another "gentle" female voice came from the other end of the phone; it was her aunt's voice: "Xiaoyao, your uncle was just worried about you, that's why his tone wasn't very nice. Don't be angry."
Yao Yao's tone remained unchanged: "Oh." Her aunt was also someone who enjoyed performing.
When Yu Gensheng heard Yu Yao's indifferent reply, he was so angry that he wanted to curse, but his wife glared at him and stopped him.
“Xiaoyao, you come back to pay respects to your parents during the New Year, but why don’t you go home to see your grandparents? They worked so hard to raise you, and this is how you show filial piety to them?” Yu Gengsheng’s tone was no better.
Yao Yao wasn't flustered at all. She wanted to avoid the sight of her family back home, but she was also prepared for them to know that she had returned.
"Uncle, how am I unfilial? Don't you feel guilty saying that? Ever since I went to university, I've sent money back to Grandpa and Grandma every month. That's enough for them to eat and drink their fill. I think I've fulfilled my duty of supporting them! Putting everything else aside, just look at the steamed buns Grandma makes. Have I ever tasted a single one? How many have my cousins eaten? Ask your cousins if they've sent money to their grandparents. Don't you know why I don't go home to see them? I'm the nemesis you all talk about. You blame me for every little thing that happens to you. How can I dare to walk around in front of you? Uncle, I'm only thinking about your safety. You should thank me!"
