Chapter 66 Liang Yanyi x Zhou Hui: Can you belong to me only tonight?
Liang Yanyi glanced at her watch. The department manager, who was giving a report, suddenly stopped, his hands clenched together, his mind racing, trying to figure out which sentence he had said wrong. It was early autumn, and the weather in the port city was hot, but he felt cold in his hands and feet. Could it be that the temperature in the conference room was too low?
The assistant on the right quickly stepped forward, bent down, and asked in a low voice, "Mr. Liang, is there anything else you need?"
"How much longer?" Liang Yanyi asked calmly, glancing at the department manager opposite her.
The manager stammered, "...three words."
“It’s been too long. Just say half a word. Get to the point.” Liang Yanyi frowned. “The rest can wait until tomorrow morning.”
The department manager breathed a sigh of relief, as long as it wasn't a business-related issue.
After the manager finished his report, Liang Yanyi got up and left first.
The managers from other departments all looked at the assistant, their faces blank.
"Zhou Sheng has an appointment with the president." The assistant coughed. "Let's call it a day."
This explanation put the managers at ease. If the president and Zhou Sheng met tonight, they would all be in a good mood tomorrow, and the atmosphere of the briefing should be good.
Zhou Hui arrived at the company's underground parking lot ten minutes early. He used to wait for Liang Yanyi directly in her office, but she said it was too ostentatious, so he had to change the location, otherwise she wouldn't let him pick her up.
These past two days, Zhou Jin came back to visit his family. He didn't dare stay at his father's house for fear of being nagged by his father, so he stayed at Zhou Hui's pre-marital apartment. They had originally planned to have dinner together, but he was stood up. He was quite unhappy and kept making phone calls.
"Aren't you annoying?" Zhou Hui leaned lazily against the car window, his eyes never leaving the elevator lobby.
Zhou Jin said cheekily, "You two are having a candlelight dinner, can't you even include me?"
"Can you even eat sitting among us?" Zhou Hui was annoyed by his second cousin, or rather, he was annoyed by every man in the Zhou family; they were all incredibly talkative.
Zhou Jin exclaimed, "It's probably because you can't eat anymore. President Liang has been quite interested in developing the Beijing North market lately."
Zhou Hui gave a cold snort, which was why they couldn't be allowed to meet, otherwise Liang Yanyi's attention would be diverted.
During their meetings, she could only look at him.
"You're afraid she'll only talk to me and ignore you, right?" Zhou Jin asked jokingly. "Ah Hui, is a woman who won't look at you if there's a third person around really worth all this effort?"
Zhou Hui raised an eyebrow slightly: "Are you sick?"
Zhou Jin smiled and said, "You've been with her since you were seven. She's been your only woman in your life. Don't you feel like you've lost out?"
"You've been a womanizer, dating countless women, but in the end, you didn't just want one woman to glance at you?" Zhou Hui said sarcastically. "By the way, did she divorce her husband?"
"Zhou Hui, are you asking for a beating?"
"You were the one who started this. Stop mentioning Xiao Yi's name, it's annoying." Zhou Hui was fed up with these people in Gangdu. They couldn't stand seeing the couple having a good relationship. He really wanted to live in Jiangdu for a while, where the people were much more agreeable.
The elevator doors opened, and Liang Yanyi, dressed in a light gray office lady outfit, appeared. Zhou Hui hung up the phone without saying a word.
Zhou Jin scratched his hair in frustration, regretting that he hadn't recorded the conversation so that Liang Yanyi could hear it and see Zhou Hui's true colors.
What kind of gentle and virtuous husband is this rich young man with a sharp tongue and a black heart pretending to be?
Zhou Hui got out of the car, strode forward to give Liang Yanyi a hug, and asked with a smile, "Are you hungry?"
"It's alright." Liang Yanyi stood up and let him hug her, his hands rubbing her arms restlessly.
When he leaned in to kiss her, she stopped him, saying calmly, "Be mindful of your image in public."
Paparazzi often stake out the basement, and I don't want them to appear on the front page of the newspaper again tomorrow. If they are deliberately smeared, it will affect the stock market.
"Even if we get photographed, they can only write that our marriage is good." Zhou Hui can't kiss her face, so he'll kiss her hand; as long as it's his wife he's kissing, that's fine.
Liang Yanyi quickly withdrew her hand and put it behind her back: "Dirty."
"I don't mind."
"I find it disgusting."
Zhou Hui behaved himself and stopped asking for kisses, inviting His Majesty to get in the car.
They went home first, and Liang Yanyi changed into a pair of flat shoes and then changed her stiff top into a pure cotton T-shirt.
Zhou Hui leaned against the door of the dressing room, talking about tonight's plans: "We'll take the tram, then go street sweeping, and after dinner we'll go for a walk on the beach."
"Where did you find the guide?" Liang Yanyi changed into casual pants when she heard that she was going to do street sweeping.
Zhou Hui walked straight in and hugged Liang Yanyi from behind: "When we were in school, all those young couples did this."
“Hmm…” Liang Yanyi didn’t know any of this, and they had been a couple since their senior year of high school, but he had never mentioned it.
He promised Zhou Hui that he would set aside one night each week for him and would unconditionally obey any arrangements.
True to her word, she went out with them.
The tram was crowded, and Zhou Hui managed to get two seats in the last row. They squeezed together, swaying and bumping into each other with their arms touching.
Liang Yanyi looked out the window at the scenery, her peripheral vision drawn to the affectionate student couple in the row in front of her.
They shared wired headphones, discussing trendy outfits and popular songs, and the celebrities they talked about were all unfamiliar names to her.
The tram date was perfect, the street stroll was perfect, everything was going according to Zhou Hui's plan, but the beach walk was ruined, Liang Yanyi was called away by a phone call halfway through, and Zhou Hui sat on a bench by the sea with two ice creams and ate them by himself.
-
Liang Yanyi was in a very low mood, but she patiently handled the unexpected event and kept the losses to a minimum.
After finishing her work, it was already past 1 a.m. She leaned back in her leather armchair and sighed wearily.
The assistant came over to ask about the next steps.
An hour and a half ago, Zhou Hui left a message saying he had gone home and even sent his home location.
"I'll stay at the company." Liang Yanyi chose to stay at the company, as she had other plans for tomorrow morning.
The assistant asked in a weak voice, "Should we...tell Mr. Zhou?"
"Tell him when he calls, he might be asleep." Liang Yanyi remembered that he had a recording tomorrow, so she always went to bed early the night before.
The assistant left and went downstairs to spend the night in the lounge. Since the boss wasn't going home, he couldn't very well leave either.
Perhaps due to a busy day of street sweeping, Liang Yanyi was exhausted and fell asleep as soon as she hit the bed.
In a daze, she heard the sound of the door lock being opened from the outside. She sat up abruptly and met Zhou Hui, who had tiptoed into the room.
"Did I disturb you?" Zhou Hui closed the door, plunging the room into darkness once more.
Liang Yanyi pursed her lips and asked, "Why are you here?"
"Never mind how I got here, I'm already here." Zhou Hui lifted the blanket and lay down.
Liang Yanyi brushed the back of his hand against his clothes, which were made of silk. He had come in his pajamas.
"Can I sleep with you tonight?" Zhou Hui tentatively inquired.
Liang Yanyi lowered her eyes, her gaze falling on the arm that was across her waist. He had already reached out and hugged it, so what was the point of asking this question?
"Go to sleep." She lay down.
Zhou Hui happily hugged her.
The man's hot breath hit the nape of her neck, and she shrank her shoulders uncomfortably, turning slightly away.
"I'm recording a show tomorrow, can you pick me up after get off work?" Zhou Hui asked.
Liang Yanyi had no plans for tomorrow night, so she agreed.
Zhou Hui: "If you live at the company from now on, I'll come and live with you too, is that okay?"
“No,” Liang Yanyi sighed softly. “I only stay three nights a week.”
"Okay." Zhou Hui stopped talking. He was already incredibly sleepy, and now that he was sleeping next to her, drowsiness washed over him.
Liang Yanyi tried to adjust to spending the whole night with him, but still had difficulty falling asleep. Once she was sure he was in a deep sleep, she quietly left, grabbed a coat, and planned to take a nap on the office sofa before going back to bed before he woke up.
She only does this when she can't take it anymore. Most of the time she lies down waiting for dawn, and sometimes she falls asleep, but she always wakes up multiple times, suffering mental torment.
She was always very careful in her actions so that he wouldn't notice.
She was probably too tired, and she slept quite soundly. She was only awakened when the door to her room opened.
Zhou Hui stared at her with a sullen face and tightly pressed lips, without saying a word.
"How many times has this happened?" he asked grimly.
After they made up last time, she promised him she would try to get used to him sleeping next to her. He even stayed up late several times to keep her company, just to help her adjust her state in time. He thought everything was getting better, but she secretly went to sleep on the sofa.
Liang Yanyi stood up: "The fourth time."
"You liar!" Zhou Hui shouted as he stormed out the door, nearly bumping into his assistant who had come to report on the itinerary.
The assistant, holding a stack of folders, stood at the door, looking left and right: "Should I... call Mr. Zhou over?"
"Find someone to take him home." Liang Yanyi lowered her eyelids, and no one could see the emotions in her eyes. "The report meeting from yesterday will continue in twenty minutes."
"Hmm..." It's not appropriate for an assistant to get involved.
Well, the couple's relationship is a bit strange, sometimes good and sometimes bad.
After the meeting, Liang Yanyi called Zhou Hui three times, and each time the call ended instantly.
She carefully edited a message and sent it over.
All of them have vanished without a trace.
At 8 p.m., Liang Yanyi appeared at the TV station on time. Her assistant had already contacted Zhou Hui's assistant in advance to confirm that the recording had ended, so she went up to the rest room to find him.
The door to the lounge was open, but Zhou Hui wasn't there; a girl was sitting on the sofa.
"Mr. Liang, it's a rare treat to have you here." Cai Yake smiled slightly. "I have a dinner appointment with Brother Zhou Hui, we can join each other later."
Liang Yanyi remembered that the other person was Zhou Hui's junior high school classmate, and they had recently co-hosted a program together.
"Since you have plans, I won't disturb you." Liang Yanyi turned to leave.
"Miss Liang," Cai Ya called out, "It's just you and your husband, you don't mind?"
Liang Yanyi glanced at him and said, "I didn't think the worst of you."
“I have bad thoughts?” Cai Yake walked up to Liang Yanyi with her arms crossed. “Zhou Hui was in a bad mood today and almost caused a hosting accident. Everyone in the station knows without asking that you two had a fight. Miss Liang, what you need is not a husband, but just a loyal dog.”
"Watch your mouth." Liang Yanyi's expression turned completely cold.
Tsai Ya-ke: "If you don't love him, let him go. For over twenty years, you've manipulated his emotions at will, tormenting him every time before gently letting him go."
Liang Yanyi: "This is our business, it has nothing to do with you."
“You…” Cai Ya Ke caught sight of Zhou Hui entering the room, stopped talking, picked up her handbag and left immediately.
Liang Yanyi turned around and met Zhou Hui's gaze.
"I have plans tonight," he said, walking past her to grab his phone from the vanity.
Liang Yanyi: "Let's talk about it when you get home tonight."
“No need. You only stay with me four nights a week, which is four days including last night. I’ll stay at the apartment for the next few days to keep my second brother company.” Zhou Hui passed by her again without pausing.
"Zhou Hui".
"Don't speak until you've thought it through." Zhou Hui stopped walking, but still didn't turn around to look at her.
"I'm sorry," Liang Yanyi said. "I tried my best to adapt..."
“You can just tell me directly, why did you lie to me? Did you not want to disappoint me? I’m even more disappointed.” Zhou Hui turned around. “I thought you had completely gotten used to having me lying next to you, and I was secretly pleased for a long time. Now you seem like an idiot.”
The sorrow between Liang Yanyi's brows stung his eyes, and he looked away slightly.
I'm afraid I'll be too soft-hearted.
"You were the one who suggested dating me."
"You were the one who proposed marriage."
"You were the one who suggested going to bed with me."
"Xiao Yi, I never pressured you, did I?"
Zhou Hui tried to hide the sadness in his eyes, wanting to harden his heart and say some harsh words.
People are so strange. Even though they like someone a lot, they always want to turn their words into daggers, stabbing into the heart, and only when they see blood can they be sure that there is love there.
"No." Liang Yanyi knew perfectly well that he had done nothing wrong in this relationship.
"I proposed dating you so I could have you accompany me to northern Beijing."
"I proposed marriage because I didn't want the media to criticize you anymore."
"Suggesting to sleep with you..." she paused, "I'm not sure if that would be a way to keep you around."
Zhou Hui adapted to life in northern Beijing very quickly and formed a new social circle. She and he gradually became like two parallel lines, and their meetings went from every other day to once a week, lasting only for one meal.
On Christmas Eve during her freshman year, she knew he was going to the market with his club, but he only agreed to go after learning that she had classes to attend.
Before going, I made a special trip to the Finance Institute to have dinner with her and brought her an apple that was carefully wrapped in a gift box.
Suddenly, she was terrified of losing him.
So she was no longer satisfied with just a hug and a kiss; she asked him if he wanted to book a hotel room.
And so, she skipped class for the first time, and he turned down their date, immersing themselves in a world that consisted only of the two of them.
She was the one who pushed for every next step in their relationship.
He willingly gave her all ownership of his feelings.
“I’ll go home every night from now on.” Liang Yanyi stepped forward, rested her head on his shoulder, and said in a slightly trembling voice, “Will you go home tonight too?”
Zhou Hui simply couldn't resist Liang Yanyi.
She quickly softened and agreed to go home.
-
When Zhou Jin received a call from Zhou Hui saying he wouldn't be staying at his place that night, it was exactly what he expected, and he used it as an opportunity to mock him.
"Zhou Hui, don't you think Liang Yanyi's feelings for you are pathological? She has a lot of problems herself, she's a complete lunatic, but she still insists on clinging to you and dragging you down with her."
"You've been assimilated into a madman too."
“Oh, I’d love to,” Zhou Hui replied casually.
"Alright, there's no reasoning with you crazy couple." Zhou Jin laughed. "But aren't you afraid that one day someone will appear who can win Liang Yanyi's favor without having to go to such lengths as you?"
"Don't curse my marriage just because the person you like isn't divorced from her husband yet." Zhou Jin hung up the phone abruptly.
Zhou Jin froze for a few seconds, threw his phone at the foot of the bed, and cursed angrily.
Zhou Hui didn't care what Zhou Jin said behind his back. While waiting for Liang Yanyi to take a shower, she read and read the short essay she had written that day. This was the first time she had typed more than ten lines.
The phone on the bedside table flashed. Zhou Hui glanced at it and saw that the contact name was "senior." Remembering their argument on the cruise ship, his face darkened.
As Liang Yanyi came out of the bathroom and reached for her phone, Zhou Hui grabbed her wrist.
"Is it urgent? Do you have to pick me up at night?"
"No rush," she said after a pause.
Liang Yanyi's hand lost its grip, and he pulled her to sit down on the edge of the bed.
Zhou Hui not only hung up the phone, but also turned on Do Not Disturb mode.
Liang Yanyi did not stop her.
Zhou Hui leaned closer, his nose brushing against hers, and asked in a low, husky voice, "BB, can you belong to me alone tonight?"
