Chapter 20 Doomsday.
The monkey and the owl came running over and were surprised to see the mother and child appear out of nowhere.
"This city has been occupied for nearly four years. Are you telling me that you held on here alone for four years, and even raised a child during that time?"
Shu Lan said calmly, "Is there any problem?"
The monkey raised his thumb and said from the heart, "Awesome."
Shu Lan smiled: "Thank you for the compliment."
They filled the van up in just two trips. Not only was it so crowded inside that you couldn't move your legs, but the roof was also filled with woven bags filled with rice and flour.
He Sheng suggested taking Shu Lan to the survivor base in District 15. Everyone else agreed, but Monkey looked at the paper map, calculated the driving distance and time, and said, "There's only three hours left until dark, and we're running low on gas. Why don't we let her stay with us for the night, and then take the highway to take her there tomorrow."
He Sheng did not answer directly. He looked at Shu Lan and signaled her with his eyes to speak.
Shu Lan said, "I have no objection. You guys make the arrangements."
It’s best not to go. Even if you go, she will find a way to run away halfway.
The monkey grinned, let out a strange "Oh!", stepped on the accelerator, and rushed out of the alley with the van, knocking away the zombies that were rushing towards him.
The zombies that ran out following the sound and smell gathered into a team, chasing the car with their fangs and claws bared, and a large number of them would catch up every time the car turned a corner.
Shu Maomao's hand moved in a place where no one else could see, and the trees on the roadside were uprooted from the soil and fell to the middle of the road with a "clang clang", hitting the zombies and forming a row of roadblocks behind the car, helping the van to distance itself from the zombie group.
The monkey saw this scene from the rearview mirror and praised again: "You are so helpful, sister."
Shu Lan smiled but said nothing.
After shaking off the zombies, Monkey remained excited and stepped on the accelerator to the bottom, and the van accelerated and shifted flexibly on the open road.
He enjoyed it very much, but the others in the car kept cursing.
"Drive slower! Damn! I almost flew out."
"Sister Chu, don't be afraid. Although Monkey seems a little mentally unstable all day long, he's not crazy. He won't use this car to send us to hell."
Sitting in the last row, Shu Lan bumped into the window several times, but remained calm: "It's okay...ah!"
The car suddenly turned a sharp corner, and Shu Lan was completely thrown off the seat by inertia, falling to the other side and bumping into He Sheng. Her slender arm fell into his broad and strong palm. She raised her head in panic and looked at him closely, even feeling his body temperature.
The elegant fragrance of toiletries drifted from her body to her nose, driving away the stench left by the zombies and completely occupying her senses and thoughts. He Sheng felt like he was petrified, not knowing how to move his hands and feet.
Shu Lan whispered, "Thank you."
He Sheng loosened his grip as if awakening from a dream. Shu Lan quickly moved back to her original position. Shu Maomao, who was standing between the seats, was as steady as a rock. She even had enough strength to pull her back: "Mommy, hold me tight."
Wild Dog and Patrick said in surprise at the same time: "So your son is not mute!"
When it came to Shu Maomao, Shu Lan's hidden thorns instantly emerged. She had a smile on her face, but it didn't reach her eyes: "My son is just a man of few words. Your captain is also a man of few words. Why doesn't anyone say he is mute?"
He Sheng: “…”
What does it have to do with him?
Patrick quickly apologized: "I'm sorry, Sister Chu, I'm so rude, I'm so rude, please don't be angry. What's the child's name?"
Shu Maomao hugged the back of the seat in front of him and tilted his head to look at the scenery rapidly moving away outside the window.
It turns out that a car can drive so fast. Mommy was driving it almost like she was crawling.
Shu Lan tilted her head to glance at her child, who looked indifferent. Noticing that he didn't want to talk to her, she answered on her son's behalf, "Maomao, his nickname is Maomao."
She was too light, and every time she turned a corner, she would be thrown out and hit the window. While speaking, she rubbed her shoulders and frowned slightly.
"Monkey." He Sheng's deep voice carried a deterrent force that brooked no disobedience: "Drive steadily, there's something on the roof, don't throw it out."
Normally, he would remain silent and would only speak up when he could no longer tolerate such trivial matters. The excited monkey slowed down obediently as if struck by a hammer: "Okay, Captain."
After the car stabilized, Shu Maomao no longer had to act as Shu Lan's armrest. He sat down between her and He Sheng, took out a handful of candy from his pocket, and placed it in Shu Lan's palm.
Shu Lan took a look and found that the hard candy he took out was obviously not the same as the one she gave him in the warehouse. She didn't know when he received the loot in his bag.
She thought Shu Maomao wanted her to open the package, and felt the need to discipline the child: "You can't eat anymore today."
Shu Maomao said, "Here you go."
Shu Lan's harsh exterior melted instantly. "Okay, I'll give it a try."
Patrick hesitated for a second before finally saying, "Sister Chu, these candies must be expired..."
"It's okay, you can eat it."
The hard candy has a strong fruit flavor, which is not bad as long as it can bring people a taste enjoyment.
The factory has been shut down for so long, and if she really had to worry about the shelf life of all the food, she would have starved to death long ago.
So whenever there was food, Shu Lan would always take a bite first. If it tasted different, she would spit it out. If it tasted the same, she would swallow it. Her stomach was pretty strong, and she hadn't had any problems with it over the years.
Patrick changed his tone: "Really? Then give me one."
Shu Lan threw it over, then turned around and found the man named Owl looking at her, so she asked, "You want one too?"
Owl seemed to be a mixed-race, with prominent brow bones, deep eye sockets, blue eyes, and half-long brown curly hair combed into a sloppy ponytail, like a bard from the West.
He shook his head, his Mandarin pronunciation being very standard, a stark contrast: "I'm waiting for you to get an upset stomach, and then I can train my abilities."
Shu Lan couldn't help but laugh: "You're quite interesting. I heard you have healing abilities, so can you heal any injury? Can you heal a zombie bite?"
Owl said, "No, my ability currently only speeds up wound healing, promotes the rapid local effect of drugs, increases the secretion of various hormones, and helps the body expel common viruses. Medical research has long shown that the zombie virus will rapidly change the genetic structure of an organism after entering the body, and this change is irreversible and cannot be treated."
Shu Lan asked casually, not understanding what he was talking about at all. After asking, she casually praised him, "That's great too. With you here, I don't have to worry about minor illnesses, and you're so motivated."
What she actually wanted to ask was whether superpowers could be trained. But she was afraid that asking too much would reveal that she wasn't a true superpower, so she decided to end the topic quickly.
After the car drove onto the highway, the buildings on both sides of the road gradually became fewer, and there were more mountains, forests and wastelands.
Shu Lan looked out the window at the lifeless scenery and sighed, "There's not even a single bird in the sky."
Her baby doesn't know what normal animals look like. All he encounters are mutant rats, mutant squirrels, and mutant stray cats and dogs.
Owl said: "Many birds have become extinct. These animals infected with the virus will attack each other and forget their reproduction instinct. If this continues, the ecosystem will collapse sooner or later. That will be the real end of the world."
