Chapter 21 Happy Hometown.
Shu Lan became interested in this topic: "But the bugs are still there."
"No, carnivorous insects are the first to be affected by the virus, but their numbers are large and their size is small, so the impact isn't as noticeable as with other creatures. I've observed a group of flies bumping into each other after feeding on a zombie corpse. But they normally fly around, so it doesn't look unusual. It's not just carnivorous insects; other insects are also in the process of extinction, like bees. Einstein said that if bees disappeared from the world, humanity would only have four years left, because without pollination, a large number of plants would become extinct. Now, survivors around the world are paying attention to this crisis, and countries are already establishing infection-free ecosystems to protect these endangered species that are crucial to the ecology."
Shu Lan stared at him with sparkling eyes. "You know a lot. You must have read a lot. It's a bit embarrassing to say this, but I went out to work when I was in high school. I met my husband at the factory, and then we got married. I've always envied people like you who are smart and educated."
Owl subconsciously avoided her admiring gaze. To be honest, she made him a little nervous, but he tried to act nonchalant. "I heard the news on the radio. Many people know it. It doesn't prove that I'm smart."
Patrick muttered sadly: "You are so smart, I can't say so much..."
Wild Dog was holding a cigarette in his mouth. He took out his lighter and was about to light it when Patrick next to him snatched it away: "Old smoker, you want the whole car to breathe your secondhand smoke again!"
"A grown man, why are you so pretentious? You won't die from smoking. Come on, brother, have one too. Don't smoke second-hand, smoke first-hand. It's a good cigarette. A pack costs three figures."
The wild dog nonchalantly pulled out another one and bit into it, but Patrick elbowed him in the ribs and whispered a warning, "Look at the Captain and the Owl."
The wild dog stuck his head out and took a look, and found that the two people he couldn't afford to offend were giving him warning looks. He retracted his neck and put the cigarette and lighter back in their places.
Shu Lan saw everything, smiled gently, and leaned back in her seat to look at the scenery.
This team seems pretty good.
Shu Maomao is the type of person who falls asleep as soon as he gets in the car. After a while, the little mushroom-head fell on her legs.
No one spoke for a while, and the car was quite quiet. The monkey in the driver's seat broke the silence first: "Why don't you continue chatting, little sister, is your husband dead?"
Perhaps because the word "husband" means the father of the child, the first thing that came to Shu Lan's mind was the figure standing high above like a god, watching people flee amid the brilliant fireworks.
Shu Lan found it funny. What kind of husband was that man? They didn't even know each other's names.
However, that plunderer was incredibly strong and should still be alive, but no one knew where he had gone.
She paused her wandering thoughts and replied to the monkey, "I don't know. I haven't seen him since he left. I don't know which survivor base he went to."
The monkey asked again, "What's your husband's name? If you meet any survivors from other bases in the future, I'll ask them if they have any news about him."
Shu Lan's gaze paused for a second at the sign that flashed past the window. It read "Jiming, 8KM."
"His name is Qi Ming."
Shu Lan lowered her head, combing her fingers through the soft hair of Shu Maomao on her knees. She whispered, "What good will it do if I find him? Do you want me to forgive him or kill him? I can't do any of those. Since he cruelly abandoned us, mother and son, I've considered him dead."
The monkey chuckled twice. "Are you interested in finding another husband? For example, I'm 23 years old, have the electric power that zombies fear the most, have a promising future, and am strong and healthy. I'm the perfect choice for a second marriage. Most importantly, I've never been in a relationship before. If you're willing to date me, then you'd be my first love."
Patrick cursed: "Shame on you."
The monkey ignored him and continued to talk to himself: "Miss, when I get off the car and take off my mask, you will find that my face is also very handsome."
"Sister Chu, don't pay attention to him. Monkey is a bit of a show-off."
Shu Lan covered Shu Maomao's ears and smiled shyly.
About half an hour later, the van drove off the highway, went up the mountain road and drove for a long time before a three-story white villa appeared in front of Shu Lan.
It is surrounded by mountains on three sides, with only one way in, and the altitude is high. It is indeed a good place to hide from zombies.
The monkey said proudly, "Sister, we've arrived at Happy Hometown. There are no large residential areas within five kilometers. It's nestled against the mountains and beside the water, with vast land and few people. The top of the mountain is flat, and the moonlight is bright. Zombies don't even go here, so it's very safe."
Shu Lan asked curiously, "Where is the original owner of this place?"
Patrick raised his hand. "I'm the owner. This is a mountaintop camping site I run. If my parents hadn't been stranded abroad while traveling and lost contact, I'd be bringing them here to live out their retirement. Oh, unload the cargo, unload the cargo."
Shu Lan stepped forward to help, but was pushed away by them. She retreated obediently and stood quietly aside.
That's fine, very gentlemanly, since she couldn't afford to move it anyway.
They moved the supplies they brought back into the house, except for the ones Shu Lan chose to keep in the car, to be used as a token of her loyalty when entering the survivor base tomorrow.
The monkey's personality is exactly the same as his nickname. As soon as he arrived in the mountains, he jumped up and down, releasing his nature, and insisted on demonstrating to Shu Lan how he used his electrical abilities to cook.
He stood by the table, holding the plug of the rice cooker, concentrating his attention, and the indicator light on the rice cooker successfully lit up.
Shu Lan applauded enthusiastically: "Wow, you can use your superpowers like this! You're like a human dynamo."
A passing owl ruthlessly exposed him: "The current he releases is very unstable. It might short-circuit in a while. In order to allow him to train his superpowers, all the appliances in the house have been damaged to varying degrees. This rice cooker was only found last week."
The monkey yelled, "Stop spoiling my plans. Just wait, I'm going to make a delicious meal today."
Shu Lan encouraged, "Practice makes perfect. I believe you can do it."
In order to get free food and drinks, just close your eyes and praise.
Shu Maomao next to him yawned listlessly, hugged Shu Lan's thigh, leaned on it, and half-lifted his eyelids.
Shu Lan looked down at him and began to suspect that maybe it wasn't because of the car ride, because he always seemed very sleepy after using his supernatural powers.
She called out to the owl as it was about to leave: "Um, Mr. Owl, is there a place where my child can sleep?"
The name Mr. Owl made the man feel so ashamed that he got goosebumps. He began to regret following his teammates' lead and giving himself a code name.
"My real name is Lucas, but you can just call me Luke. Let's go upstairs. There's a couch in the empty room."
Shu Lan said gratefully, "I can cook. Please leave this job to me. Otherwise, I really don't know how to thank you for your help."
Lucas looked at He Sheng, who usually ran the kitchen, and waited for the other party to nod before answering, "Okay."
Shu Lan took Shu Maomao upstairs. She stayed upstairs for a while, then squatted down and asked quietly, "Baby, did they whisper anything?"
Shu Maomao looked really sleepy. He forced himself to stay conscious and repeat what he heard to Shu Lan.
"Patrick said that Sister Chu has such a good personality, she'll definitely be bullied by bad guys if she goes to the base. Monkey said, 'That's right, why not persuade her to stay and develop a relationship with me, then you'll have a virtuous and gentle sister-in-law.' Patrick said, 'Fuck you, a toad...wanting to eat...swan meat.'"
His head began to tilt back, his eyes closed, and his mouth continued to speak.
Shu Lan smiled and kissed Shu Maomao lightly on the head: "It's okay, go to sleep, baby."
