Chapter 23 Stop asking.
This sentence inexplicably made the house quiet.
Normally, meals are not so intense. After the captain puts the food on the table, no one fights or grabs it. They just come over to eat when they see it. After eating, they wash the dishes and then go about their own business.
The unseen future makes everyone confused. They don’t know how to change the world or return to their normal life. They can only live one day at a time.
The unexpected guests seemed to break the cycle, and they seemed to cheer up and joke with each other again.
But after this guest leaves tomorrow, life will continue to move forward without any ripples.
Shu Lan didn't expand on the topic. She just mentioned it and then lowered her head to clear the table.
Lucas stopped her: "I'll do it. I used to do the dishes."
"oh."
Shu Lan put down her chopsticks, placed her hands and feet at her sides, and even when she sat down, she would turn her head to look at the kitchen from time to time, looking visibly restrained.
Patrick suggested that they go stargazing together at night as a pre-bedtime entertainment activity to help digest their food.
There were three private cars parked in the area originally used for camping. Shu Lan asked, "Are all these cars broken down?"
"No, it's usable and full of gas, but it can't hold five people at once, so it's sitting idle."
On the open and flat mountain top, we lit a fire, sat around it, and chatted from time to time, creating an atmosphere of peace and tranquility.
Patrick asked excitedly, "Sister Chu, I'm curious how you managed to survive in a place where so many zombies gathered?"
Shu Lan: Young man, don’t be too curious.
She thought about it and came up with a more reasonable explanation: "Before the zombie outbreak, I ran a small supermarket."
“But how do you cook when there’s no water or electricity?”
Shu Lan said sadly, "A few years ago, I wasn't the only one with superpowers in the city, so we could help each other out through difficulties. But then...something happened that I don't want to recall. What about you? Have you been friends from the beginning?"
Stop asking, she can’t continue her story.
Patrick was indeed diverted from the topic: "No, we met and rescued some companions on the way to escape. Those with families went to the base, and only the five of us old bachelors stayed."
Wild Dog laughed and said, "You are the only one who is still single. I am divorced. The captain has a girlfriend and the wedding date is already set."
He Sheng was taking a shower in the house, so they dared to talk about the captain so unscrupulously.
Shu Lan's curiosity was piqued: "Then why isn't your captain's girlfriend here?"
"Before the incident, we were separated and couldn't contact each other. The captain later asked around and found her. The woman was at the District 9 base and had already started dating another man."
Shu Lan said: "Oh..."
Who can be blamed? Maybe the woman also thought that He Sheng died in the disaster. You can't ask her to remain a chastity for a dead person.
After taking a shower, when He Sheng returned to the small group, he found that everyone looked at him with some ambiguous sympathy.
He knew the truth with just a quick guess, sat down, and threw a few more pieces of dry firewood into the fire. The exploding sparks suddenly flew into the air, like fluttering fireflies, with a kind of beauty full of vitality.
"Did you just talk about me?"
Wild Dog and Patrick looked at each other and smiled guiltily at the same time: "Hey, just chatting casually, do you have any other questions, Sister Chu?"
Shu Lan looked at He Sheng's wet hair and asked, "Can I take a shower too?"
Patrick said, "Sure, there's plenty of spring water in the mountains, but it's hard to get water after dark. Tomorrow..."
The topic suddenly stopped because he remembered that she was leaving tomorrow.
Shu Lan said sympathetically, "It's okay, then don't wash it for now. You guys chat. I'm a little tired and want to go back and rest."
Lucas picked up the flashlight beside him and said, "I'm going back to my room too, so I'll give you a ride."
There was a dark section of nearly a hundred meters from the house to the top of the mountain, and there was no light in the house for lighting, so Lucas might not really want to go back, but just want to accompany her.
The figures of the two walking down the mountain gradually became smaller, and their voices seemed to be carried in the breeze: "How old is your son?"
"Four years old. After giving birth to him, I spent four springs."
"A very poetic way to keep track of time..."
After the sound of the two people's conversation could no longer be heard, Monkey couldn't help but speak: "Honestly, I like this girl very much. She is exactly the wife I dream of. She is beautiful, virtuous, and has a good temper."
Patrick said unhappily, "What's the point of liking someone? Do they like you?"
"She always smiles at me, speaks softly, and adores me so much. If this isn't love, what is it?"
Patrick muttered, "I think she does the same to me."
The wild dog added: "The same goes for owls."
He Sheng touched his pocket and belatedly remembered that he was in the process of quitting smoking and didn't have that thing on him.
The monkey said firmly, "I can feel that she smiled at you purely out of courtesy. I am the only one who is special. You have no idea how bright her eyes were when she looked at me. Thank God, I met the love of my life before being mauled to death by a high-level zombie. Anyway, I want to keep her, so don't stop me."
He Sheng's face darkened and he said unhappily, "We agreed to send her to the base. If we go back on our word now, she'll think we're not good people."
Monkey simply refused to listen: "It's time to care about whether he's a good person or a bad person. I'm pursuing her openly and honestly, not forcing her. Who wants to watch the stars with you guys every day? It's boring. I'm going to sleep."
Shu Lan and her son were lying on the sofa on the second floor. She could hear the sound of everyone coming back. Although she seemed to be fast asleep, she was actually always alert.
Hearing someone approaching, Shu Lan gripped the knife hidden in the blanket tightly, ready to pull it out at any time.
But the person who came just put a thicker quilt on her, seemed to stand by and observe her for a while, and then went back into the room.
In the darkness, a pair of puzzled eyes slowly opened.
What kind of bad luck is this? I was forced to kill four people because I didn't want to steal the superpowers, and when I wanted to steal them, all the people I met were good people. What should I do?
Whether humans live or die, the sun will rise every day.
Shu Maomao was the first one to wake up in the whole house, because he started sleeping after dinner yesterday. He opened his eyes before dawn and was no longer sleepy.
He crawled out from under the quilt and woke Shu Lan. The mother and son looked at each other. Shu Lan raised her lips and whispered to him in a low voice: "Do you feel particularly sleepy after using your superpowers?"
Shu Maomao nodded and lowered her voice like her: "Mommy, I can hear them talking when I sleep. The thin man said he likes you, and you like him too."
Shu Lan pinched his face and said, "He's dreaming. I only like Shu Maomao in the whole world. Let's get up."
The two of them, one big and one small, tiptoed downstairs. After washing up, Shu Lan went into the kitchen, put on an apron and started to make breakfast.
She had to try to stay here for a while and get more information about the current world, as well as the mutants and zombies.
So before this, Shu Lan would maintain the illusion of being gentle and virtuous in order to gain the favor and trust of this group of people.
Shu Maomao ran into the kitchen after using the toilet and asked her, "Mommy, have I grown taller?"
Shu Lan chuckled. It's only been a few days, how could he have grown taller?
But she still put her hand on his head, compared his height, and said in surprise, "Oh, you've really grown taller. You're almost as tall as my waist."
Shu Maomao nodded with satisfaction and stood on tiptoe to watch her knead the dough.
After being kneaded, the flour became a white and soft ball. It was placed in a basin and covered with a wet towel to wait for it to wake up. Shu Lan sat on a small stool and began to peel potatoes.
Apart from anything else, she really envied them for having different vegetables to eat. Fresh ingredients were more precious than gold during this period.
Shu Maomao looked at it for a while and said, "Mommy, let me play with it for a while."
Shu Lan needed a helper, so she handed him the potatoes and the peeling knife. "Be careful, don't cut your hands."
