Chapter 24: A veteran.

Chapter 24: A veteran.

After washing the vegetables, Shu Lan looked back and saw her little son sitting on a rice bag, carefully peeling potatoes that were bigger than his fist. Each one was peeled cleanly, and her heart was melted by his cuteness.

"Mommy will make you something delicious."

Take a potato and cut it into a rectangle. First, cut a row horizontally without cutting through, then turn it over and cut a row diagonally. Finally, sharpen a bamboo chopstick and poke it through. Fry it in oil at high temperature, and a potato tower is ready.

There was barbecue ingredients in the kitchen. Shu Lan opened it, smelled it, sprinkled a small amount on it, tasted it herself, and made sure it was not hot and had not changed its taste before giving it to Shu Maomao.

At this moment, a figure appeared at the door. Patrick, wearing pajamas and with a bird's nest on his head, looked at the mother and son in confusion: "Why are you up so early?"

Shu Lan smiled: "It's too early to go to bed."

Patrick nodded dazedly, heard a crunching sound, and looked down to see the child chewing on a potato tart with gusto.

"You did it?"

Shu Lan grabbed her apron and asked cautiously, "Well, you won't blame me for misusing your ingredients, will you?"

Patrick quickly said, "Not really, not really. There are plenty of potatoes in the cellar. They're easy to grow, but..."

He licked his lips and said enviously, "Can I have one too?"

He hadn't eaten this kind of snack, which he had only seen at the night market, for a long time. The captain only knew how to steam, roast and stir-fry potatoes. He was too lazy to make complicated things.

Shu Lan nodded: "Sure, wait a moment."

Five minutes later, Patrick happily went upstairs with a potato tower to change his clothes and met Lucas on the way.

Lucas: "What are you eating?"

Patrick: "Mom... no, Sister Chu made me some potato tarts. Hehe, they're so delicious."

Lucas said "Oh" calmly, went downstairs and went straight to the kitchen. Seeing the little boy sitting next to him waiting, he found that he was not as thick-skinned as Patrick.

He is in his twenties and can't ask to eat the same snacks as the kids.

So Lucas asked, "Do you need help?"

Shu Lan said, "If you have any onions, you can pick some for me, as well as some green vegetables."

"good."

Although he didn't get the potato tower, he got the freshly fried scallion oil fruit and fried dough sticks.

Shu Lan turned off the fire and waited for the oil to cool before she started to shred potatoes and carrots. Lucas couldn't help, but he couldn't move his feet.

He took the initiative to find topics to talk about, and stayed in the kitchen under the pretext of chatting: "My mother never cooks, and she won't make me food. She says it will make her hands ugly."

But Shu Lan's hands are very beautiful, white and slender.

Shu Lan said, "Then she is very happy."

"So you were very unhappy before?"

Shu Lan sighed and started talking: "Yes, my husband requires me to cook different food every day. If the food is not satisfactory, he will put down his chopsticks and start beating me."

Lucas never expected that the woman who always smiled in front of him had such a miserable marriage. He said in a heavy tone: "I'm sorry, my words reminded you of the past that you shouldn't remember."

Shu Lan said, "It's okay."

Because she made them all up.

The fact is that after her grandmother passed away, she lost her source of income while she was still in school. Her parents didn't care about her, and her relatives treated her as if she didn't exist. Shu Lan was so poor that she couldn't afford to eat, so she picked up unwanted vegetables from the market every day and cooked them herself.

During that period, Shu Lan felt like she was living like a rat in a gutter. She never even dreamed of happiness. All she wanted was to have enough to eat and stay alive. Her life was no different from now.

Pour the cooled oil back into the oil tank and use the remaining oil in the pan to fry the carrot and potato pancakes.

While she was cooking, other people woke up one after another, following the smell to the kitchen, each holding a fried dough stick, and watching her boil water and cook noodles.

Shu Lan added vegetables, salt, and chopped green onions to the noodles, then turned off the heat. She smiled with relief and said, "Okay, everyone, have breakfast. After that, it's time for me to leave."

The monkey suddenly jumped up, holding his feet: "Ouch, ouch, my rheumatism is coming on, my legs hurt!"

Lucas was speechless: "Rheumatism hurts the knees, not the calves."

Monkey's hand moved up a little: "Anyway, I can't drive today, I'll take you to the base tomorrow, Miss Ao."

He Sheng said: "No, I'll drive."

Monkey really wanted to punch the captain twice. He had made it so clear yesterday, so why was he not willing to fulfill his wish at all!

The breakfast was delicious, but the table was very quiet, and at one point the only sound was the sound of swallowing.

Shu Maomao, as usual, has the body of a four-year-old child but eats as much as an adult, and his belly is slowly getting bigger.

After dinner, it was time to leave. He Sheng walked to the front of the car, and Shu Lan followed with the child. Among the remaining people, only Ye Gou came out staggeringly with a cigarette in his mouth.

"Captain, Patrick said he had a stomachache and went into the bathroom and wouldn't come out. Owl said he didn't have combat abilities and wouldn't be able to help us, so he decided to stay and study the monkey's rheumatism."

He Sheng: “…”

How could a young man in his early twenties get rheumatism?

Wild Dog folded his arms and didn't get in the car: "It takes three hours to drive to the 15th District Base. Isn't it too risky for the two of us to send someone there?"

He Sheng looked at Shu Lan. Shu Lan placed her hands on her son's shoulders, lowered her head slightly, and said sadly, "Yes, it's too dangerous. Rather than letting you encounter danger on the way to the survivor base, why not send me to the nearest urban area? I will hide in the house like before and hold on for as long as I can."

He Sheng frowned: "That's impossible, wait here for a while."

He went into the house to talk to the three men. Wild Dog stood by the car, smoking and waiting, secretly observing the mother and son next to them.

The child looked cute, but his temperament was very strange. He had a childish face and didn't say a word, only his black eyes were moving, as if he was a lifeless fake doll.

He only talked to his mother, who was beautiful and quiet. With her excellent cooking skills, she quietly won over more than half of the team, making them willing to disobey the captain's orders.

You have to know that He Sheng used to be a man of his word, and his words were like stones falling on the ground, and no one dared to refute them.

Judging from the fact that she can shake the morale of the army, this woman is no ordinary person.

Shu Lan noticed his gaze and turned to look at him directly, her eyelashes drooping, pale and weak: "I'm sorry, I seem to have caused trouble for you all."

He seems to be a good person who is too considerate and ends up suffering losses.

Perhaps it was intuition, but Wild Dog could never completely trust her, even though her every behavior perfectly catered to men's preferences.

He exhaled a puff of smoke and gave a slightly mocking smile: "Don't worry, you can't leave today."

Shu Lan tilted her head in confusion: "Huh?"

"Don't play dumb. I've seen more tricks than you've walked across. You can fool those inexperienced kids, but you can't fool a seasoned veteran like me."

Shu Lan was silent for a moment, then said, "It sounds like you have some opinions about me, but I'm someone who accepts help. I'll accept whatever arrangements you want."

A punch on cotton leaves the wild dog speechless.

He Sheng went in for a walk and came back twenty minutes later with a stern face, "Let's go. We'll just take the highway and keep an eye on the roadside. We'll be safe once we pass the residential area in the middle."
