Chapter 106 Imperial Guards

Jiang He seized the opportunity to draw his sword and pointed it at the man in black, shouting, "You audacious thief, surrender now!"

The man in black's eyes flickered, and suddenly he leaped into the air and disappeared into the night.

Jiang He's heart sank, knowing that this person must be a master of lightness skills.

He immediately turned and chased after the direction in which the man in black had disappeared, while blowing his whistle to summon other guards for backup.

The men in black entered the palace as if it were empty.

As Jiang He gave chase, he pondered the black-clad man's motives. He secretly vowed to capture this assassin who dared to break into the palace and protect the emperor's safety.

Suddenly, the man in black stopped in front of a palace. Seeing this, Jiang He quietly approached, preparing to capture the man in black in one fell swoop.

However, just as he reached out to grab the man in black, the man in black vanished again like a ghost.

Jiang He looked around and realized he was in the Empress's palace. A bad feeling welled up inside him; was the man in black targeting the Empress?

He immediately pricked up his ears to listen for the sound and pinpoint its location.

Jiang He found it strange; were the palace guards really that slow to react?

He chased after them all by himself for so long, and not a single person came to his aid.

Just as he feigned doubt, a slight noise came from behind him. Jiang He immediately turned around and saw a man in black, wielding a short sword, rushing into the Empress's palace...

Oh no! Jiang He was shocked.

He didn't care that the guards were not allowed to enter the inner palace.

He was about to rush in.

Suddenly the lights came on.

The area around Fengyi Palace was filled with guards.

One of the guards had the same build as the man in black from before.

"You audacious traitor, how dare you infiltrate the guards! You shall die!"

Jiang He looked closely and realized it was General Li, the commander of the Imperial Guards.

He breathed a sigh of relief; it seemed the Empress was safe and sound.

"Thank you for arriving in time, General," Jiang He said, bowing.

"Guard Jiang, you did a great job. This scoundrel dared to infiltrate my Imperial Guard to assassinate me; he is truly audacious," General Li said angrily.

His indignant expression made it seem as if the man in black from before wasn't him at all.

“This thief is highly skilled in martial arts. If I hadn’t been tracking him all the way, the consequences would have been unimaginable.” Jiang He said truthfully, though he didn’t understand why.

"Yes, you have rendered a great service this time. I will report this to the Emperor," General Li said.

"It's all within my duty, nothing to mention," Jiang He said modestly.

At this moment, the Empress came out of her palace, and everyone bowed to her.

"Greetings, Your Majesty the Empress."

"No need for formalities," the Empress said. "Guard Jiang, thanks to you, I was spared. What reward do you desire? Just name your name."

"Thank you, Your Majesty. Protecting Your Majesty is my duty, and I dare not presume to ask for any reward," Jiang He said.

"Guard Jiang is truly a loyal and righteous man, and I am very pleased with him," the Empress said with a smile. "In that case, let's discuss and reward him later."

"Thank you, Your Majesty the Empress." Jiang He bowed again.

A crisis was averted, and Jiang He finally felt relieved. He secretly rejoiced that he had discovered the man in black's plot in time; otherwise, the consequences would have been unimaginable. However, he also realized that security within the palace needed to be strengthened to prevent such incidents from happening again.

Thinking of this, he immediately reported, "Commander, do you think the guards are safe, given that the thieves entered the palace as if it were empty?"

Unexpectedly, Commander Li burst into laughter: "Good, good, good!"

The three consecutive "good" comments left Jiang He bewildered.

Commander Li stopped pretending.

The surrounding guards also laughed.

Jiang He felt a surge of anger, but he couldn't vent it.

Thieves broke into the imperial palace and escaped unharmed.

Commander Li could still laugh.

"Commander!" Jiang He roared in anger.

Commander Li immediately said, "You've passed the test!"

"What!" Jiang He was completely bewildered.

Commander Li walked over and put his hand on Jiang's shoulder: "Guard Jiang, I have high hopes for you."

Jiang He also realized what was happening at this moment.

There were no thieves at all; it was all a charade staged by Commander Li and himself.

But why does the Empress have to join in their nonsense?

Jiang He: "Commander Li, were you the man in black just now?"

"Yes!" Jiang He understood the situation and shook his head helplessly.

"This humble general pays his respects to Your Majesty the Empress!" Jiang He bowed to the Empress.

"Guard Jiang, you performed very well in this test," the Empress said with a smile. "From today onwards, you will be the deputy commander of the Imperial Guard."

"What?" Jiang He exclaimed in disbelief.

He had just entered the palace and had not yet made any significant achievements.

Tonight's pawnshop incident alone has escalated to... a stomachache? Isn't this a bit too frivolous?

Seeing his bewildered expression, Commander Li said, "Go to the Imperial Study to see the Emperor."

"Thank you, Your Majesty!" Jiang He said, not forgetting to thank the Empress before leaving.

"From now on, you will be responsible for the security of the palace together with Commander Li. You must not let your guard down," the Empress instructed.

"Your subordinate obeys!" Jiang He replied solemnly.

Looking at Jiang He's dashing figure, the Empress gazed at his back for a long time.

Jiang He followed Commander Li to the Imperial Study, where the Emperor was reviewing memorials.

Commander Li stepped forward and reported, "Your Majesty, Jiang He has arrived." The Emperor raised his head, glanced at Jiang He, and said with a smile, "I heard that you performed exceptionally well today, so I hereby appoint you as the Deputy Commander of the Palace Guard. From now on, you will work with Commander Li to protect the safety of the palace."
