Everyone was surprised.
Isn't the Emperor being a little too kind to Vice Commander Jiang?
Upon hearing the news that his son had nearly died, Jiang Zhongyong rushed to the palace to request an audience with the emperor.
Jiang Zhongyong was stopped outside the palace gate.
The guards did not recognize him.
Jiang Zhongyong has not appeared in the imperial court for far too long.
When the emperor heard that Jiang Zhongyong had arrived, he felt somewhat guilty.
The man's son had only been working for a short time when he almost lost his life.
He had intended to teach Vice Commander Jiang a lesson, but unexpectedly, it alarmed his father. The emperor quickly ordered someone to bring Jiang Zhongyong in.
Upon seeing the emperor, Jiang Zhongyong felt a surge of anger.
But under imperial power, he could do nothing.
Emperor Rongsheng looked at Jiang Zhongyong, his heart filled with mixed feelings.
He recalled the days when he and Jiang Zhongyong fought side by side to build their empire in their youth.
Jiang Zhongyong doesn't have so many twists and turns.
The emperor was a treacherous person who would betray his benefactors after using them.
Jiang Zhongyong wouldn't be interested in risking his life for someone like that.
But he couldn't stand in his son's way.
The emperor, for reasons unknown, gave his son the title of top martial arts scholar to a bodyguard.
However, if his son wanted to get ahead, he had to pursue a career in government.
He just didn't expect to reach the emperor's side so quickly.
Jiang Zhongyong didn't want to know the emperor's plans.
But his son's life cannot be lost here.
Jiang Zhongyong knelt down with a thud: "Your Majesty! My son is not suitable to serve before the Emperor."
The emperor remained noncommittal: "General Jiang, Deputy Commander Jiang is out of danger. The imperial physician says it is not advisable to move him now."
Jiang Zhongyong thought about it and realized that even though he was at odds with the emperor, he couldn't treat his son's life as a joke.
"Is it too much for me to want to see my son?"
Jiang Zhongyong and the emperor were childhood friends.
How could he not know the emperor's ulterior motives?
It was bad enough that his eldest son couldn't return to the capital without being summoned, but he was only at ease when his other son was kept by the emperor's side.
Jiang Zhongyong had never done anything wrong in his life. The emperor was wary of the Jiang family, yet he was also reluctant to part with them.
The emperor hesitated for a moment, but still granted Jiang Zhongyong's request. He knew that if he continued to refuse Jiang Zhongyong, it would probably provoke even greater dissatisfaction from him.
The son is on the verge of death, but the father is not allowed to visit him.
Even the emperor can be impeached by the censors.
When Jiang Zhongyong saw that his son was safe and sound, a huge weight was finally lifted from his heart.
However, during a conversation with his son, Jiang Zhongyong discovered that his son was very enthusiastic about his job as an imperial bodyguard.
The son said he was willing to serve the emperor.
Jiang Zhongyong just wanted to yell at his son.
It hasn't been long, and they almost lost their lives.
"Are you tired of living?"
Jiang He looked earnestly at his father: "Father!"
His voice was very low.
Jiang Zhongyong felt even more distressed.
Well then, since my son is determined to do this, I'll let him go.
When the emperor heard that Jiang He insisted on staying in his presence, a weight was lifted from his heart.
Today's events have further confirmed the Jiang family's loyalty to the emperor.
Jiang Zhongyong felt helpless. He understood that his son had grown up and had his own ideas.
Despite his dissatisfaction with the emperor, he decided to temporarily set aside his personal grievances for the sake of his son's future.
Jiang Zhongyong sighed and patted his son on the shoulder. "Since you have made up your mind, I will not stop you. However, the job of a royal bodyguard is like walking on thin ice. You must be careful in everything you do."
Jiang He nodded solemnly, "I understand, thank you for your kindness, Father."
After talking a lot, Jianghe's spirits dropped considerably.
Seeing his once lively son reduced to this state after saving the emperor, Jiang Zhongyong felt immense pain in his heart.
However, loyalty to the country and filial piety cannot be fulfilled at the same time.
Jiang Zhongyong also knew that the sons of the Jiang family were not only loyal, but none of them were cowards who feared death.
Jiang Zhongyong simply couldn't understand the emperor.
He had just seen it; the emperor's concern for the rivers was genuine.
Could it be that the emperor has other plans for the Jiang family?
After that, Jiang He intended to fulfill his duties as the imperial bodyguard even more diligently. With his outstanding martial arts skills and wit, he repeatedly resolved crises and gained the emperor's deep trust.
Although Jiang Zhongyong outwardly complied with his son's choice, deep down he was still worried that the emperor would use his son as a hostage.
"Your Majesty! Prince Yu and Miss Jiang request an audience."
"Let them in!" Emperor Rongsheng said.
It's good that Miss Jiang is here; that old geezer Jiang Zhongyong won't have to worry about harming Deputy Commander Jiang anymore.
"Go! Go see your second brother, make sure he doesn't suffer any lasting health problems." The Emperor waved his hand dismissively, asking no further questions, and sent them directly to the side hall to see Jiang He.
Miss Jiang entered the side hall and saw Jiang He's pale face; tears welled up in her eyes.
Jiang He was so flustered that he couldn't see his sister's tears.
Lin Muheng and Jiang Zhongyong exchanged greetings.
"Second Brother, how are you feeling?" she asked with concern, holding Jiang He's hand.
Jiang He forced a smile. "I'm fine, little sister, what brings you here?"
"I heard from Prince Yu that you were injured, so I came to see you." Miss Jiang wiped away her tears. "My mother was also very worried about you. She told me I must heal you."
Jiang He nodded. "Tell Mother I'm fine, so she can rest assured."
Jiang Zhongyong said, "Wei'er, you should quickly check on your second brother and see when he can return to the manor."
This is, after all, the imperial palace; there's no reason for a subject to always live in the imperial palace.
Jiang Chuwei took her second brother's pulse and was surprised to find that his pulse was strong and steady, not at all like someone who was weak and frail.
