17 Menggui High School (17)
Successfully served as [invigilator]
His slightly rising intonation faded away just as the school bell rang.
The night outside the window was dark and the cold wind blew incessantly. The lights above flickered, and Qin Fu'an could glimpse a hint of fear in the boy's handsome face.
Fleeting.
Qin Fu'an began to feel a strange sense of anticipation for this so-called evening self-study exam.
What kind of exam could silence the entire school building?
It's important to know that Menggui High School isn't just for senior students; there are also freshmen and sophomores. So during the day, he can see a few more vibrant students than the seniors.
But now that night has fallen, in this huge school with thousands of students studying together, Qin Fu'an feels as if he is in a deserted, abandoned ghost school, where apart from the howling wind, he can hear no other sound.
Qin Fu calmed down and, within 30 seconds after the school bell rang, finally caught some unusual sounds from outside the classroom.
Someone is stepping on the stairs.
Getting closer and closer...
It's getting clearer and clearer.
With the incessant clacking of high heels, Qin Fu'an could clearly sense that all the student NPCs in the classroom unconsciously tensed up.
Even the tentacles that were originally wrapped around Qin Fu'an's wrist nervously retracted, and they hadn't uttered a single sound since the start of class.
The crisp sound of high heels was like a heavy drumbeat on the heart. As it drew closer, everyone's hearts seemed to be swept up in unease and panic, beating in unison, and—more and more heavily!
Zhao Jiayue was in agony, her body arched, her hands clutching her heart, her face deathly pale.
The other players were in slightly better condition than her, but they were all silently breathing heavily, trying to suppress their heart palpitations.
Compared to the players, the other NPCs in the classroom seemed to be more adapted. Apart from their pale faces, they didn't show any particularly painful reactions.
Qin Fu'an looked around, and the orderly footsteps that kept ringing in his ears were finally approaching.
It stopped outside the window next to Qin Fu'an.
Qin Fu'an was certain of this, but when he turned to look, the window was still empty. There was no sign of the teacher, or even a strange creature.
The next second, a soft, feminine voice rang out across the entire campus.
"Hello students, I am your proctor for tonight's exam."
"Please prepare to answer the questions. In one minute, I will announce the content of this exam."
A minute is a short time, but it seemed to become exceptionally chaotic as players waited anxiously.
Is a minute a long time or a short time?
What is test preparation? Where is the test paper? Isn't this an exam? Why can the proctor's voice be heard throughout the entire school?
What can you do in one minute to prepare? Why aren't the NPCs around me moving? What kind of exam is evening self-study? What happens if I fail to answer the questions?
Too many questions lingered in the minds of every player. Even Nan Zhu, in that short minute, turned around several times to try and observe what Qin Fu'an was doing, hoping to give herself a little more confidence.
Not only her, but the other players had the same mentality. They were all in a state of panic but did not know what to do, and their whole bodies were filled with unease.
Unfortunately, they were destined to be disappointed.
Because Qin Fu'an not only sat in his seat without making any movement, but also automatically became the proctor of Class 4 of Senior Three during that brief one-minute countdown.
The invigilator's badge automatically appeared on the left side of Qin Fu'an's school uniform, along with a set of rules related to invigilators in his mind.
[Invigilators] will assist invigilators in maintaining exam discipline in their respective classes.
During the exam, the proctor can check the students' exam status and answers.
During the exam, the [invigilator] will have all the invigilation functions of an invigilator in the class, except for setting the questions, and will be immune to all attacks originating from students.
Once selected, an invigilator shall not be transferred in any way during the examination unless the invigilator dies or the nameplate is lost.
Be careful, if the [invigilator] badge is stolen or lost, all functions will be disabled, and if you encounter another [invigilator] at that time, you can only wish them good luck.
Please assist the invigilator in completing this exam. If the exam is completed successfully, you will automatically become the invigilator for the next exam in this class and will receive a reward from the school.
After Qin Fu'an quickly memorized the long list of rules, before he could even organize his thoughts, he heard the countdown end.
The proctor's soft, gentle voice rang out unhurriedly throughout the school:
"Menggui High School has always emphasized the all-round development of students in morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics and labor. Recently, some teachers have frequently complained to their superiors that the students are becoming bookworms who only bury their heads in books."
"Therefore, after continuous discussions among the school's senior management, it was finally decided that the content of this exam would be: physical education test."
The physical education examination rules are as follows:
Students must try their best to avoid being caught by the sports equipment. If a student is successfully caught by the sports equipment once, 20 points will be deducted from their test score.
This physical education test is graded on a 100-point scale, with a passing score of 60 points. If a student fails the test, they will be immediately converted into a physical education teaching aid for this test.
Bonus point: Those who successfully snatch the [invigilator] badge and wear it until the end of the exam will receive an extra 50 points.
After explaining the rules, the proctor paused in his gentle voice, seemingly to give the bewildered students some time to process them.
The campus was silent for a full ten seconds before the proctor, seemingly smiling, clapped his hands and announced, "The exam will last 120 minutes. Candidates may not submit their papers early."
"Now—the exam begins."
The proctor's voice faded away, replaced by a huge, blood-red countdown that appeared in the night sky.
1:59:58
As the seconds dwindled, the students, who had been on high alert, all rushed outside in a frenzy.
Similarly, the entire teaching building was teeming with students pouring out.
Just by looking at how they were rushing out in a swarm, Qin Fu'an could foresee how serious the stampede would be on the stairs leading downstairs, and how many students would be trampled to death in the chaos.
Soon, only a handful of people remained in the classroom.
Besides the bewildered and confused players, there were also student NPCs trying to fold themselves up and hide under their desks or in other cramped spaces.
Qin Fu'an, who was sitting comfortably in his seat, turned his head to look at Xie Yunhuai, who was tense all over.
"Aren't you going to dodge?" he asked curiously.
Xie Yunhuai's fair features were shrouded in a cold, gloomy aura. His body seemed to be trembling slightly, but he still tried to remain calm as he replied, "Now... we can't run. There are too many of them, they'll die."
The sound was intermittent.
In reality, Xie Yunhuai was thinking about the pain and despair he felt when he died countless times in this stage of the process.
Squeezed into a bloody pulp, trampled into a blood-red carpet on the stairs, pushed and shoved to their deaths, devoured piece by piece by hungry classmates, and...
It seemed that every time Xie Yunhuai stepped out of that classroom, he would never have a chance to survive.
Although there are countless ways to die even if he doesn't step out, the degree of pain will be different from one death to another.
Xie Yunhuai would rather wait for a death that is less painful.
So he sat in his seat, quietly waiting with his eyes down.
The boy's long eyelashes trembled uneasily, and the tentacles extending from his body stopped chattering. Instead, they seemed to protect him, encircling Xie Yunhuai's slender body in layers, protecting him thoroughly.
Qin Fu'an then understood that perhaps every evening self-study exam at Menggui School was the most feared and difficult hurdle for Xie Yunhuai to overcome.
So terrified that even their souls wept and trembled.
Before he could think of anything else, the students' terrified screams rang out from outside.
After realizing he wasn't moving, the players who got up and ran outside happened to pass by the window where Qin Fu'an was sitting. Hearing the noise, they all looked in the direction of the sound.
Then some people gasped in horror, others' pupils shrank sharply, and Ark even cursed.
"This is a sports teaching aid?!" Bai Song couldn't help but exclaim in surprise.
Their reactions were different yet remarkably similar, which aroused Qin Fu'an's curiosity.
He immediately put on his [Invigilator] badge, walked past the empty, crooked chairs, and went to the corridor outside the classroom to check.
In just a few breaths, the five players who were just in the corridor had vanished without a trace.
The corridor was completely empty.
It might not be entirely empty, after all, there was a mangled corpse at the end of the corridor, and a "sports teaching aid" that was grabbing the corpse and eating it with relish.
According to the exam rules, this corpse should not have been caught by the teaching aid, but rather crushed and trampled to death, and then dragged up by the teaching aid to satisfy its craving.
Just then, the "sports teaching aid" seemed to notice Qin Fu'an's gaze and immediately looked up at him with eyes all over its body.
"Oh, it really is an acquaintance." Qin Fu'an was not surprised but happy. He even turned around from the door and called out to his little classmate who was sitting blankly in his seat, "Little Xie, do you want to come and see? It's a live mukbang performance by our classmates. Maybe watching it will cure your picky eating problem."
To be honest, the first thing he noticed when he looked over there was that the way the player who died that morning was "eating" looked quite appetizing.
It's just a bit slow. Even though it has eyes all over its body, it can't learn the ability of its homeroom teacher to swallow food with its eyes in the morning. It's still struggling to eat with its only mouth.
Fortunately, "sports teaching aids" are "objects" without the ability to think, otherwise, based on Qin Fu'an's words alone, it would have been so angry that it would have abandoned the corpse and chased Qin Fu'an for at least two miles.
Xie Yunhuai, who was invited by Qin Fu'an to watch a mukbang, once again realized that Qin Fu'an was mentally ill.
His previously calm and unperturbed emotions, which had been quietly awaiting death, were stirred by Qin Fu'an, forcing him to close his eyes, take a deep breath, and then stare expressionlessly at Qin Fu'an's suicidal act.
Well, if Qin Fu'an dies before me, I might be able to breathe a sigh of relief when I die.
