87. 087 Eunuch Liu
"It was you in the haystack that day," Su Yu asked with certainty.
Liu Quan denied it, shaking his head and saying, "I've never been to any haystacks."
"If you haven't been there, you haven't been there. Anyway, your actions tonight are enough to get you into trouble." Su Yu wasn't afraid that he wouldn't admit it. She held a stick in her hand and pressed it against his chin. She originally wanted to beat him up to vent her anger from being scared earlier, but making any noise in the middle of the night would be annoying, so she had to give up.
"You're such a coward. Didn't expect to get caught by me, did you? You tried to scare me with those little tricks while my man was away, but you ran into me. Your little tricks are like child's play in front of me. To be honest, I've been waiting for you to run into my hand ever since I spotted you on the street. I wasn't even scared."
Liu Quan glanced at her, and thinking about how she had had to have two children pick her up from get off work for so long, he scoffed at her words, "You bitch, you dare to talk big." He laughed loudly.
Seeing the current situation, Su Yu had no intention of letting him off the hook. Suddenly, he wasn't nervous or scared anymore. Begging for mercy would only land him in the police station, so he might as well curse her out. Liu Quan sat upright on the ground, staring at the blurry figure in front of him, and said hatefully, "Little wench, I should have dealt with you a long time ago. I held back for a moment and let you get away with it. But you women are all the same. I can guess what you look like up and down. Why don't you tell me and see if I'm right?"
Su Yu frowned, cursed "disgusting," kicked him to the ground, groped to hold his head down, and smacked him on the mouth with a rolling pin. The bound man thrashed and rolled on the ground like a snake whose tail had been stepped on.
"Ping An, go get all the kitchen rags and stuff them in his mouth so he doesn't disturb people's sleep," Su Yu said.
When the rag arrived, Ping An didn't let his mother do anything. He simply gagged the man tightly and kicked him in the stomach twice. Only when he saw that no sound came out did he walk away, satisfied.
"You bastard, you're just a maggot in the latrine, only daring to fantasize in your filthy heart. Bah, you spineless coward, you have no skills whatsoever. Even if you guess eighteen times a day, you'll never catch my eye, never touch a hair on my head, you good-for-nothing."
"You two beat him up to vent your anger, then go to sleep and go to school on time tomorrow." Su Yu stood up and told the two children next to her to beat him up so she wouldn't feel so resentful.
"Then I'll go first." Ping An walked over with his fists clenched and punched him twice. After he finished, Su Yu could still hear him inhaling.
"Mom, give me the rolling pin," Xiao Yuan said, panting heavily. He vaguely understood what Liu Quan had just said, which made him tremble with anger. He took the rolling pin, stepped on the person on the ground, and slammed it down on his arm. "You're not human," he muttered weakly.
"You two go back to your room," Su Yu urged.
"What about him? Should we stay here and keep watch?" Ping An asked.
"No need, Xiao Hei and Xiao Hua are watching him, he can't run away. You two go to sleep quickly, I'll wash my hands and go back to my room later."
After the two of them went inside and the light bulb was turned off, Su Yu squatted down and looked at the man on the ground who looked like a lump of lazy meat. She said softly, "Since you like to guess so much, then you can guess whether your second brother can still stand up later."
After saying that, she got up and walked to his legs. Xiao Hei, who was sitting next to her, stood up to make room for her.
"Waaaaah..." Liu Quan wanted to beg for mercy but couldn't make a sound. He tried to sit up by tilting his head back, but his arms were so badly beaten that he dared not exert any force. He could only wriggle on the ground like a worm, trying to get away from that vicious woman. He didn't even care about the barking of the dog beside him.
She couldn't quite catch his footing as he moved around, so she went to the kitchen to turn on the light before coming out. Now that there was light in the yard, she could see the bulging veins on Liu Quan's face.
"You were so quick-witted just now, are you trying to beg for mercy now? It's no use, you're not fit to be a man." Su Yu spotted the spot, stomped on it, and ground it down again and again.
"Ouch—wooo!" Liu Quan arched his back in pain, his head banging against the ground. Su Yu was stunned, then went over and pressed his head down, worried that he might die. She was afraid of getting into a murder case.
The man on the ground was in excruciating pain, but it was nothing compared to the agony he was in. His face was pressed against the ground, and tears streamed down his face. He truly regretted it. Why did he have to provoke her? He had thought that if he went to the police station, he would just lose his job, but he had saved enough money to live on for many years. He had considered the worst-case scenario of losing his job, but he never expected this woman to be so ruthless.
He dared not move or make a sound. He hoped she would leave quickly and that the flesh beneath him would still be able to react after a night's rest.
Su Yu went back to her room to sleep as he wished, leaving Xiao Hei and Xiao Hua in the yard to keep him company.
Liu Quan cried for a while and then fell asleep without realizing it. He was awakened by the crowing of a rooster. His first reaction was to check his crotch, but his hands were tied behind his back. The rubbing noise attracted a dog, so he dared not move. He stiffened, feeling a sharp pain. He desperately wanted to know if he could still use it. After hesitating for a while, he stared at the dim sky and let his pants get soaked again.
Having never experienced this before, he didn't know if he could still stand up after urinating. Liu Quan turned his head to look at the door, and for the first time, he desperately wanted her to take him to the police station.
The police can punish him, but they can also protect him.
Fortunately, Su Yu's husband wasn't home, he thought. But if her husband had been home last night, he wouldn't have said anything to provoke her, and maybe he wouldn't have been stepped on in the crotch. He couldn't quite describe his feelings, but he regretted all those actions. He really just wanted to scare her.
After breakfast, Xiao Yuan and Ping An pulled the person on the ground and walked outside, with Su Yu following behind. When they came out, they saw the neighbors who were eagerly waiting for the commotion.
"Send him to the police station?" The words were spoken to Su Yu, but the eyes were fixed on the man whose mouth was stuffed with a rag. His pants were torn in several places by the dog, he walked with his legs tucked together, and his head and face were covered in dirt.
"Good, daring to cause trouble at the door, this scoundrel deserves a good beating." Aunt Wu spat out a mouthful of rice and said, "If Xiao Wuzi were home, he would have crippled both of his legs. That wicked thing, he should have been bitten to death by the dog last night."
"Our dog is a good dog, it won't kill anyone," Su Yu waved her hand, trying to clear her dog's name.
When they arrived at the police station, the officers had just started their shift. They took the tightly bound man and asked, "What happened here?"
"He had malicious intentions towards me, scouting my house in the middle of the night. Last night wasn't the first time; I was on my guard. As soon as the dog barked last night, I got up, and he was lying on my front door. When I opened the door, the dog chased after me." Su Yu exaggerated the matter, saying that malicious intent was much more serious than knocking on the door in the middle of the night. "This person is my colleague, from the orchard in the next county. He came across the county around 2 a.m., and he had come here about ten days ago as well. Everyone in his village knows that he wasn't home that night. His wife said he was having an affair. If he hadn't come to my door that night, then he must have gone to a prostitute."
"Officers, please interrogate him properly. What was his intention in lying on my front door in the middle of the night? It's terrifying. My husband isn't home, it's just me and my two sons. My kids are terrified."
"We will investigate carefully." The police officer looked at the familiar woman and twitched his lips. They had almost forgotten about this family who had reported the case to the police three times in two years, but she had reported it again.
The person was delivered, and the situation was explained. Su Yu and her two children left the police station, but as soon as they stepped out, Su Yu turned back. "Officer, his bicycle is still in my alley."
"Okay, I got it. Someone will go and ask about the situation later, and we'll move it back."
In the interrogation room, the rag in Liu Quan's mouth was pulled away, and he spat out two teeth, hurriedly saying, "Take me to the hospital, I need to see a doctor."
The police ignored him and continued their interrogation, asking him why he came, how many times he had come, what he was doing there, and why he was squatting outside Su Yu's house.
Despite Liu Quan's many scheming thoughts, he was actually quite timid. He didn't dare to have any ulterior motives towards Qiu Fuli, let alone lie in front of the police. Moreover, he was in a hurry to get to the hospital, so he immediately explained everything clearly: "I just wanted to scare her and make her sleepless. I didn't intend to do anything bad to her. If I had any bad intentions, I would have poisoned the dog first. I didn't do that. I just wanted to make the dog bark so she wouldn't be able to sleep. I didn't expect her to dare to open the door."
"I've explained everything. Can you take me to the hospital? I was bitten by a dog several times, and my arm was broken." Liu Quan hesitated for a moment, but still didn't mention his groin injury. If he didn't tell, only he and Su Yu would know. If he did, people in two counties might find out. If he recovered, people would be suspicious. If he couldn't recover, he would never be able to hold his head up high again. Everyone would laugh at him. He could already imagine what people would call him.
"We'll take you to the hospital after we've investigated the situation." The policeman said and left, leaving Liu Quan alone in the interrogation room. Ignoring the visible wounds, he pulled down his pants and glanced inside. He immediately panicked, his hands trembled, and his legs went weak so he couldn't stand up. He screamed, "I confess to everything! I did it all! Take me to the hospital! Stop investigating! I did it all!"
The police officers who were barged in were surprised and couldn't understand why he changed his story so quickly in less than a minute. So they interrogated him again. This time, Liu Quan also confessed to staking out Su Yu in the thatched hut. He answered whatever the police asked, with only one request: to get him to the hospital immediately.
"This is the first time I've seen such a spineless man. He only has a few cuts on his legs, and he's not even bleeding, but he's still so scared that he can't stand up." The policeman holding the notebook leaned against the wall and watched Liu Quan walk, his legs too weak to support him, almost as if he was being carried on someone's back.
"What will be the sentence for this person?" someone asked.
"It's hard to say. If he succeeds, he could be executed, but if he fails, it depends on how the higher-ups decide the sentence."
Su Yu went to the orchard, and the news of Liu Quan's arrest at the police station spread. His wife also found out and brought the children to the orchard. Su Yu looked at her, thinking she would cause a scene, but she calmly asked, "Will he release him after asking a few questions?"
"No, it will be closed for at least a year and a half."
"Okay, I understand." She took the child's hand and turned to go down the mountain again.
Su Yu glanced at Qiu Fuli and Yu Yuan'an, noticing that they were also taken aback by Liu Quan's wife's reaction. She couldn't quite figure out what this woman was thinking.
Three days later, Su Yu heard that Liu Quan's wife had gone to the Revolutionary Committee to report him for illegally possessing foreign books, unilaterally divorced him, and severed ties with his child.
Thanks to her intervention, Liu Quan was taken away from the police station by the Revolutionary Committee. After being interrogated, he was directly sent to a farm where prisoners were held for labor reform.
After Su Yu returned home, she immediately packed the books she was reading into a box and buried it in the yard, leaving only the notes outside.
