Chapter 15 Three Rules
Jiang Rong squatted on the ground in front of the cactus, staring thoughtfully at the raised concrete. The concrete, which was more than ten centimeters thick, was easily pushed aside. Was his house foundation still okay?
Seeing Jiang Rong squatting down in front of it, the cactus silently moved its large flower from the yard to stand in front of her. "Jiang Gong~"
Jiang Rong was caught off guard and his face was covered in pink and white pollen from the flower stamen. Peeking out from among the petals, Jiang Rong decided to make a three-point agreement with the cactus. But before that, he needed to give the cactus a name.
After wiping the pollen off her face, Jiang Rong said thoughtfully, "Shall I give you a name?"
The tiny thorns on the cactus rustled as they rubbed together, and a flash of light appeared in my mind: "Jiang Gong, Jiang Gong~"
After pondering for a moment, Jiang Rong spoke, "Do you like the name Qiuqiu?"
The cactus clearly didn't like the name. It twisted its body in resistance, and the sharp spines on its trunk flew out and pierced the insulation layer of the house's exterior wall with a "thud thud thud".
Jiang Rong came up with a few more names, such as "Little Green," "Flower," and "Green," but these names were all ruthlessly rejected by the cactus. Before long, a layer of yellowish thorns appeared on the insulation layer of Jiang Rong's house.
Just as Jiang Rong was still thinking, Jiang Xiaoheng's cries came from inside the courtyard wall, "Waaah, Daddy, Daddy!"
Xiao Heng's cries were sharp and desperate. Jiang Rongxin's heart jumped. Could it be that her son had been pricked by a cactus?
He quickly ran towards the yard, shouting, "Hey, Dad's here! He's here!" and mentally commanded the cactus: "Don't prick anyone!"
When he ran into the yard, he saw his son standing barefoot in the middle of the yard, holding a doll. Jiang Xiaoheng's clothes were wrinkled, and his small shoulders were exposed from the wide collar. He was crying loudly with his head tilted back and his mouth wide open, tears streaming down his cheeks, his little face flushed red from the emotion.
In Jiang Rong's memory, Jiang Xiaoheng's cries were never very loud. Hearing his son's heart-wrenching cries now, he immediately rushed over and picked him up, asking, "Where are you hurt? Where are you hurt?"
Jiang Xiaoheng's crying stopped abruptly. His tear-filled eyes were watery. After seeing Jiang Rong clearly, he opened his arms and hugged Jiang Rong's neck tightly. "Dad!"
Hot tears streamed down Jiang Rong's neck. Jiang Xiaoheng's voice trembled as he hiccuped, "I thought, I thought, Dad was gone, gone..."
Jiang Rong turned her head and kissed her son's soft hair. "Daddy's right here, I'm not going anywhere." She blamed herself; the child hadn't even recovered from his anxiety and fear when she left him alone in the bedroom. Her son must have been terrified.
Jiang Xiaoheng was still sobbing, and Jiang Rong took the opportunity to carefully check his son's body. Seeing that his son was unharmed, he was relieved. However, his son's habit of not wearing shoes when going out had resurfaced. He rubbed his son's feet, and sure enough, the soles were burning hot.
Just as Jiang Rong was about to carry her son back to the bedroom, she suddenly heard a whooshing sound behind her. Turning around, she saw a huge red flower peeking over the wall and extending behind her and her son.
Jiang Xiaoheng opened his eyes wide in surprise and forgot to sob. His gaze lingered on the umbrella-sized flower for a long time, and then, following the direction of the flower, he finally saw the cactus hanging on the wall, wriggling.
Jiang Rong paused for a moment. He hadn't figured out how to explain the major crisis to his son, or how to explain the mutated animals and plants, when the mutated cactus suddenly appeared in front of his son.
Just as Jiang Rong thought her son would scream in fright, Jiang Xiaoheng's face lit up with a surprised and excited smile. He pointed in the direction of the cactus and shouted, "Dad, look at the little fairy!"
Jiang Xiaoheng raised his hand to wipe his face, "The fairy has bloomed, Daddy, look!"
The cactus's sharp spines rattled, and its massive body twisted. Jiang Rong heard its smug voice in his mind: "Jiang Gong, Jiang Gong~ There's a problem~"
It seems you really like this name.
Jiang Rong: ...
Jiang Xiaoheng had cried too many times recently, and tiny cracks had appeared on his fair face. After carefully applying face cream to his face, the son regained his previous delicate and beautiful appearance.
Jiang Rong was a little confused. He squatted down and helped his son put on his sandals while asking, "Xiao Heng, why do you call the cactus outside 'little fairy'?"
Jiang Xiaoheng took a sip of milk, tilted his head, and looked innocent. "The flower seller said so, Dad, have you forgotten?"
Upon closer reflection, it seemed there was indeed such an incident. Years ago, when he and his son were shopping at the supermarket, his son was drawn to the potted cacti. Later, on the recommendation of the sales clerk, he chose the smallest cactus. At the time, there was a label on the cactus pot that simply read "Little Fairy," and Jiang Rong even pointed to those three words and read them aloud to his son.
Jiang Rong had always assumed the labels were just randomly pasted on and hadn't paid them any attention. She was surprised that her son had such a good memory; he had actually remembered the name of the cactus.
Thinking about how her son hadn't been eating or sleeping well these past few days, Jiang Rong patted his head. "Sweetie, Daddy's going outside to talk to the fairy for a bit. You stay home and play with Lele, and Daddy'll make you something delicious when he gets back, okay?"
Jiang Xiaoheng nodded obediently.
However, as soon as Jiang Rong turned around, a small hand accurately grabbed the hem of his clothes. Looking down, he saw Jiang Xiaoheng staring at him expectantly, showing no intention of letting go.
Jiang Rong sighed, "Okay, it's very sunny outside, Dad, take an umbrella."
Jiang Xiaoheng then cheered up, "Mmm!"
As Jiang Rong and his son walked out of the courtyard, the little fairy's bright red flower followed behind them, twirling around. When the two reached the vicinity of the cactus, the flower once again slammed into their faces, so hard that it flipped their umbrellas over.
Just as Jiang Rong was about to pick up the umbrella, the large floral umbrella forcefully flipped up and covered their heads. The fragrant and cool floral umbrella was incomparable to any man-made one. Jiang Xiaoheng instantly fell in love with the brightly colored floral umbrella, and he thanked the fairy in his childish voice, "Thank you, fairy!"
The fairy shook her flower umbrella, scattering fine pollen.
Although the fairy was very considerate, Jiang Rong still planned to make a three-point agreement with it: "Fairy, I have something to ask of you."
The fairy shook off her thorns. "There's a problem~"
Jiang Rong pointed in the direction of the house, "This is my and my son's house. If we damage it, we'll have nowhere to live. When you grow up, you can't damage the house. By damage, I mean stabbing the house with your thorns and piercing the walls with your roots. Do you understand what I mean?"
As soon as he finished speaking, the cactus straightened up with a "whoosh." Because it straightened up so quickly, its large flower shifted, but the next moment, the beautiful flower drooped down again, obscuring the father and son.
The little fairy twisted her body, "Jiang Gong~"
The voice in Jiang Rong's mind told her that the fairy had agreed to the first agreement.
Jiang Rong said seriously, "The second rule is that you can't hurt people indiscriminately."
Lele hummed twice beside Jiang Rong, reminding its owner not to forget its presence.
Jiang Rong paused and added, "Of course, we shouldn't hurt the pets at home either."
As soon as she finished speaking, three sharp spikes shot out from the cactus, each landing right in front of Lele. While the little fairy's roots could break through concrete, the spikes lacked the necessary force. However, the speed and sudden attack were enough to frighten Lele into retreating.
Lele pressed its ears behind its ears and barked loudly in the direction of the fairy. The fairy twisted its body, its voice surprisingly teasing, "Something's wrong~"
Jiang Rong sighed imperceptibly, then became serious. "Little fairy, I'm not joking with you. You and Lele are both members of the family, and I hope you can protect each other and not bully each other. If you can't do that, Xiao Heng and I will be very sad."
The fairy stood up straight. "Engineer Jiang."
A smile crept onto Jiang Rong's lips, and he nodded slightly. "Very well, it's settled then."
Just as the two were about to return to the courtyard, the fairy shot out sharp spikes, blocking their path. Jiang Rong turned around suspiciously, "Hmm?"
The little fairy was a bit anxious, and her childish voice echoed in Jiang Rong's mind, "One, two, three, one, two, three!"
Jiang Rong miraculously understood what the fairy meant. The fairy wanted to ask him: Why did you only say two of the three rules, and leave out the third?
He raised an eyebrow slightly, surprised that mutated plants evolved so quickly, their intelligence far surpassing that of some mutated animals. No wonder the superhumans of his past life said they would rather oppose high-level mutated animals than provoke high-level mutated plants.
The little fairy didn't know much about humans, and even if Jiang Rong explained it in detail, it might not understand. After thinking for a moment, Jiang Rong decided to treat it the way she would her son, "The third point is that it must be obedient and tell me if it encounters any difficulties."
The fairy shook her magnificent flower, "Engineer Jiang!"
Jiang Rong was very satisfied. "Then you stay here, little fairy. We'll go back first." Although they had umbrellas, the temperature around them was rising rapidly. After only a short time outside, the father and son were already sweating profusely.
Looking up at the sun, Jiang Rong sighed helplessly. In this awful weather, only heat- and drought-resistant plants could survive.
