Chapter 116 The Past

Because Zong Ping said he wanted to see Mingming and Ruirui, Zong Shao went home first that day.

But when he got home, Zong Shao habitually looked for Lin Wei first. Since he didn't find her downstairs, he went back to the kitchen and asked, "Mom, where is Weiwei?"

"Beibei just woke up, so I went upstairs to feed her. Didn't you want to go out for dinner with your dad? Why did you come back so soon?" Lin's mother thought Zong Shao had come back after dinner.

Zong Shao explained: "He wants to see Mingming and Ruirui again. I will come back to pick them up."

Mother Lin paused and asked, "Are you going to take Mingming and Ruirui with you?"

"It's just a meal. I don't know when we'll see each other again."

Mother Lin was very reluctant to let her grandson go to see Zong Ping. In fact, she was not even happy that Zong Shao was going to see him. But just like her daughter said, no matter how bad Zong Ping is, he is still Zong Shao's father.

And from what Zong Shao said, he probably didn't plan to visit him often in the future, so he nodded and said, "Then go ahead, and remember to come back early."

Zong Shao responded, and then said, "I'll go upstairs to see Weiwei first."

After saying that, he left the kitchen and strode upstairs.

The door of the master bedroom was ajar but not locked. Zong Shao arrived at the door and pushed it open. He saw Lin Wei sitting on the bed with her child in her arms and her back to the door. When she heard the sound, she leaned slightly to the side but did not turn around or speak.

With just one move, Zong Shao realized something was wrong. He walked over, hugged her and asked, "Are you feeding the baby?"

"Yeah." Lin Wei responded with a lukewarm attitude.

Zong Shao walked around to the back of the bed and saw that she had her brows lowered, her eyes focused on the child in her arms, as if nothing had happened. But if she was really okay, she would definitely look up and smile at her instead of focusing all her attention on the child.

Zong Shao sat over and asked in a low voice: "What's wrong? Who made you angry?"

Lin Wei finally reacted, but she just raised her eyelids, looked at him coldly, then turned around and faced away from him again.

Zong Shao frowned, propped himself up on the bed with one hand, leaned over to look at her, put his arm around her shoulders, and asked, "Did I make you angry?"

Lin Wei snorted coldly.

"How...did I make you angry?" Zong Shao asked while thinking about what he had done in the past few days.

He was on duty last night and did not go home. When he left home yesterday morning, Lin Wei was still asleep and there was no conversation between the two. They did chat for a long time the night before, but the atmosphere was very harmonious, so he shouldn't have made his wife angry.

No matter how he thought about it, Zong Shao couldn't imagine how he had made Lin Wei angry.

But after more than a year of getting along, he summed up a truth: no matter what his wife was angry about, he would always be right to admit his mistake first, so he said, "I was wrong."

Usually when the problem is not serious, as long as he admits his mistake, Lin Wei will ask "What did you do wrong?", and then he will try to make up an excuse. If he is right, her expression will not change much, but if he is wrong, she will say "You don't even know what you did wrong, and you come to admit your mistake to me?"

At times like this, he would change direction and continue talking in the right direction, or make her angry and she would take the initiative to point out where he was wrong. Next, he only needs to focus on the problem, reflect on his mistakes and admit them, and he can always appease Lin Wei.

As for when the problem was serious, Zong Shao had never encountered it and was not sure how Lin Wei would react.

But he knows now.

Lin Wei just looked at her daughter in silence. After the little girl had eaten and fell asleep, she put her on the bed, leaned over, opened the drawer of the bedside table, took out a handkerchief, and wiped it behind Zong Shao's back.

After wiping it clean, she buttoned her clothes one by one, tucked her daughter's clothes in, put on her shoes and was ready to go out.

Seeing her reaching for the door, Zong Shao quickly stood up and walked over, holding her hand and hugging her: "Weiwei, let's talk."

As soon as he finished speaking, he saw big tears falling from Lin Wei's eyes, one by one, and soon, her face was covered with tears.

Lin Wei doesn't like to cry. Except for the time when she first found out she was pregnant and when she was close to death, she rarely cried at other times.

Therefore, when Zong Shao saw Lin Wei's tears, he immediately panicked. He kept admitting his mistakes and begging her to tell him what had happened.

Faced with his pleading, Lin Wei finally spoke up and asked, "Why did you marry me?"

Zong Shao was stunned, not understanding why Lin Wei was suddenly curious about this question.

Seeing that he was silent, Lin Wei raised her eyes and glared at him: "Speak!"

Although he was confused, seeing Lin Wei's eagerness to know the answer, Zong Shao knew that this might be the crux of the problem. He pondered for a moment and gave a solemn answer: "Because I like you."

Although a chance encounter in their youth was not enough to spark love, he did have a good impression of her at that time, otherwise he would not have expected to meet her again, but he was disappointed in the end.

Later, when his mother mentioned their childhood marriage, his first feeling was ridiculous, but when he saw Lin Wei's photo, the ridiculousness turned into fate.

She has always been special in his heart.

If they hadn't reunited, that special feeling might have faded away over time. But when they met again, special love took root.

Even though he was not so sure that he liked her at that time, he knew that he did not want to miss the girl in front of him, so on the day they met, he proposed to her that he wanted to date her.

Over the years, until now, Zong Shao has been very glad that he acted decisively at that time. If he had not immediately expressed his feelings and confirmed their relationship, it would be unknown whether they could be together.

And the things that he was not so sure about at the beginning also had their answers in the course of time.

Lin Wei believed Zong Shao, but she stretched out her hand to push him away and said, "You are lying! You married me because we had a childhood engagement. You are using an arranged marriage to spite your father!"

Zong Shao frowned: "Who told you these words?"

"Who told me that? Just tell me if it's real!"

"Of course it's not true!" Zong Shao denied it flatly, and said with a firm look, "There's no way I'd spend my whole life being angry with someone."

Lin Wei bit her lip, looking hesitant, as if she was thinking about the truthfulness of his words.

Zong Shao walked up to her, put his hand on her shoulder, lowered his head and looked into her eyes and said, "Weiwei, I don't know who of them came to see you or what they said to you, but I can swear to you that I married you only because I like you, I don't want to miss you, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. There is no other reason." He raised his hand, "If there is, I will die miserably!"

"Who told you to swear?" Lin Wei quickly covered his mouth with her hand, "Puh, the oath you just made doesn't count."

Zong Shao didn't listen to her, he pulled her hand down and said, "Don't worry, I'll be fine, are you willing to believe me?"

Lin Wei took her hand back, pursed her lips and said, "I believe you."

"Then you're not angry anymore?" Zong Shao looked at her with a smile.

Lin Wei snorted: "If you want me not to be angry, you have to explain clearly what happened between you and that sister?"

"What sister?" Zong Shao frowned again.

Lin Wei sneered, "Besides the sister who is in poor health and always mischievous, and you have to stay at home patiently to take care of her, do you have other sisters?"

Zong Shao asked: "Are you talking about Yang Qian?"

Lin Wei snorted coldly: "Oh, it turns out that what your stepmother said is true."

When Lin Wei said that he was using marriage to get angry with his father, Zong Shao guessed that Zong Ping and Wu Shujuan had said something to her, so when Lin Wei mentioned Wu Shujuan, he was not surprised and just asked, "What did she say?"

"Why do you ask that?"

"After you find out, I can explain it to you," Zong Shao stared at her and said, "Weiwei, I don't want any misunderstandings between us."

Lin Wei turned her head, wiped her eyes with her hand and said, "Didn't you make an appointment with your dad? There's no rush."

Zong Shao said without hesitation: "He is not as important as you."

Lin Wei quarreled with Zong Shao not because she believed Wu Shujuan's words, but because of what Zong Shao said.

She always felt that no matter what Zong Ping's character was, he was Zong Shao's father after all and had raised Zong Shao. It was unrealistic to want them to completely sever their relationship, so she never thought of forcing Zong Shao to make a decision.

But the problem now is not whether they should have any contact with Zong Ping in the future, but that Zong Ping’s current wife obviously does not want to let Zong Shao go.

This time Wu Shujuan just wanted to sow discord between her and Zong Shao. She believed in Zong Shao, so nothing would happen to them. But if it fails the first time, will there be a second time? No one knows what Wu Shujuan will do then.

Lin Wei was not afraid that Wu Shujuan would target her and Zong Shao, but she had three children and she could not put them in danger.

So she could only exaggerate the matter and make a fuss with Zong Shao, asking him to go find Zong Ping and Wu Shujuan.

The best situation is that Zong Ping, out of consideration for their father-son relationship, breaks up with Wu Shujuan, so that Wu Shujuan won't be able to use his power to target Zong Shao.

Just like this trip to Yazhou Island, if there was no Zong Ping and Zong Shao did not agree, Wu Shujuan would not be able to get on the military supply ship at all. She could only take a bus from Yangcheng to Zhan City, then take a civilian ship from Zhan City to Yecheng, and finally go around most of the island to get to Ya County.

Even if she had gone through so much trouble to get to the Sanlin base, she couldn't enter the family area if Zong Shao didn't want to see her. Zong Ping's identity gave Wu Shujuan many conveniences, which allowed her to say these words in front of Lin Wei.

The worse situation is that Zong Ping truly loves Wu Shujuan and believes in her but not Zong Shao. But if Zong Shao could break up with Zong Ping for her and the children and be prepared, he would be able to cope with it in the future.

The worst thing is that Zong Ping favors Wu Shujuan, and Zong Shao can't bear to break up with Zong Ping. In this case, Wu Shujuan can only hope to stay away from it. There is nothing she can do.

Lin Wei hoped that Zong Shao could be ruthless, so she repeated what Wu Shujuan had said, adding fuel to the fire.

The more Zong Shao listened, the gloomier his expression became.

Seeing that the fire had almost burned out, Lin Wei stopped and said, "Please explain."

Zong Shao explained: "I did take care of Yang Qian..."

Before Wu Shujuan appeared, their family had always been a model family in the compound. The husband and wife lived in harmony, the father was loving and the son was filial, and Zong Shao had a happy childhood.

At that time, Zong Ping was regarded by everyone as a good husband and a good father.

Therefore, when Zong Shao said that Wu Shujuan and her daughter were the wives and daughters of his deceased comrades, neither Chen Xinglan nor Zong Shao had any doubts.

Because of Zong Ping's instructions, Chen Xinglan took good care of Wu Shujuan, and Zong Shao, even though he didn't have that much patience, took the time to help Yang Qian adapt to life in the compound, but that was only the reason at the beginning.

Later, Zong Shao treated Yang Qian well, mainly to please his father.

After Wu Shujuan appeared, Zong Ping and Chen Xinglan still appeared to be a model couple to the outside world, but they gradually had more and more quarrels. Most of those quarrels were caused by Zong Ping.

During those years, Zong Ping's temper became very bad, and he would often become like a lit firecracker over a small matter.

Zong Shao accidentally discovered that when Yang Qian was at their house, Zong Ping would control his temper. And when Zong Ping found that he took extra care of Yang Qian, or taught her to do her homework, or made her happy, Zong Ping would reveal a rare smile.

Every time this happened, his mother would smile.

After realizing this, Zong Shao invited Yang Qian to his home more frequently.

Zong Shao said expressionlessly: "I was so stupid at that time. I thought I had found a good way to make him happy. Every time I saw the harmonious atmosphere at home, I was complacent about it."

At that time, he thought that his father was particularly fond of Yang Qian because of his deceased comrade-in-arms. It was not until much later that he realized that his father did not favor the daughter of his comrade-in-arms, but that he loved the whole family.

Lin Wei wanted to hug Zong Shao, but she held back and asked, "Then why did Wu Shujuan say that you married me out of spite?"

"I don't know," Zong Shao shook his head and added, "But something happened during that time."

After Chen Xinglan and Zong Ping divorced, she had no intention of letting Zong Shao be with her. It was not because she did not want a son, but it was a very realistic issue: Zong Ping was in better condition.

Before returning to Shicheng, she worked as a warehouse manager, and she continued to do so after returning to Shicheng. However, Zong Ping is a senior military executive, and Zong Shao's future will be much easier if he follows him.

With this idea in mind, even when Zong Shao found Shi Cheng, Chen Xinglan did not tell him the truth about the divorce. Instead, she told him many times to keep in touch with his father.

Although Zong Shao could not accept the fact that Zong Ping remarried Wu Shujuan quickly after his divorce, his relationship with his father became much colder and he was reluctant to return to his home in the capital during those years, the relationship between him and Zong Ping was far less strained than it is now.

Therefore, he got a month's home visit leave that year, and when Zong Ping called him and asked him to go back to the capital, he went. But just a few days after he returned, Zong Ping and Wu Shujuan expressed their intention to have him marry Yang Qian.

"How ridiculous, it's not enough for him to marry that woman, he also wants me to marry her daughter."

Although Chen Xinglan never said it, Zong Shao was not stupid. By then he had figured out a lot of things and naturally could not accept such an arrangement. That night, he packed his luggage and went to Shicheng.

Lin Wei calculated the time and asked, "Auntie Lan knows about this?"

Zong Shao nodded and said, "After I returned to Shicheng, he called my mother's workplace to try to contact me. My mother noticed something was wrong and asked me the reason, so I told her everything."

"Then Aunt Lan, in a fit of rage, thought of our childhood engagement?" Lin Wei guessed.

Zong Shao said: "My mother was indeed angry at first."

Although Chen Xinglan and Zong Ping had been divorced for several years, the past was still a knot in her heart. Therefore, when she learned that Zong Ping actually wanted to match her son with Wu Shujuan's daughter, she became obsessed and thought of the jokes she had made with her good friend in the past.

Lin Wei asked: "Did she change her mind later?"

"The reason why my parents' marriage failed was never because of arranged marriage, but because of my father's cowardice." Zong Shao held Lin Wei's hand and said, "I am not him, and I will never be him."

Zong Shao's words convinced Chen Xinglan, but she had already told her best friend about the date, and she really liked Lin Wei, so she gave her son a photo of Lin Wei and let him make his own choice. She would not force him.

And Zong Shao’s choice was, see!
