Chapter 13 Talking about Work

Because Wang Fangli said that Director Chen had something important to discuss with her, Lin Wei didn't delay much after arriving home. She put her things down and went out with her two children.

Director Chen's home is also by the sea, but it is at the same end as Lin Wei's home. It takes seven or eight minutes to walk there, which is about the same as the Military Family Resettlement Office.

But Director Chen's house is not one of those townhouses near the Military Family Resettlement Office. The ones facing the sea are all single-family houses with front and back gardens and seven or eight bedrooms.

Moreover, it is not easy to live here. There are level requirements. Those who can apply for a house here must be at least deputy brigade level.

As Lin Wei looked around, she felt that the house here was indeed much better than hers. Not only was it larger, but it was also relatively new and looked quite new.

Of course, Lin Wei was not too envious. First, she knew she couldn't be envious. Second, she was quite satisfied with her current house. Anyway, there were only four people in their family, and the current house was big enough for them.

Except for the old house at the back, the newly built townhouses and single-family houses are all similar, the only difference is the size of the house, and there are no signs on the road, so Lin Wei counted the houses along the way.

When she reached the tenth building, Lin Wei stopped, turned around and looked at the two brothers who were bending over to pick up shells, and said, "Mom has something to talk to someone about. You guys play outside for a while. Don't run around, okay?"

Hearing his mother's voice, Mingming quickly stood up, hid his hands behind his back and said, "Got it!"

They came along the beach, and from time to time they could see pointed shells or hollow snails popping out on the way. Children of their age were just beginning to be interested in these things, so the two brothers picked them up as they walked, and in just a few minutes, each of them had a handful of small shells in their hands.

But he clearly didn't dare let his mother see it, because every time he brought something back, his mother would nag him and ask him to wash his hands, and she had to use soap!

Seeing his brother's actions, Ruirui quickly hid his hands behind his back.

Seeing the two brothers' trick of trying to cover up their own mistakes, Lin Wei felt a little amused, but after thinking about it, she decided not to say anything and just repeated, "Play here. Don't run away, and don't go into the water. Got it?"

Mingming was impatient and complained, "I know, Mom, you are so nagging."

Lin Wei was both angry and amused when she heard this: "When did you not tell me you knew? Did you listen to me in the end? Ruirui, remember to keep an eye on your brother for me. Once he leaves this area, call me, okay?" In this regard, the younger brother is much more reliable than the older brother.

Rui Rui straightened her back immediately after hearing this: "I promise to complete the task!"

After arranging the two children, Lin Wei turned and walked into Director Chen’s yard.

The yard is divided into two halves, one half is used to plant some vegetables. In one vegetable patch, a few sticks are inserted, and green vines climb up along the sticks, connecting them together to form a net. The slender beans hang down from the vine net, and there are quite a lot of them.

The other half of the yard is planted with a lot of flowers of different varieties, and the flowers are also colorful, adding a lot of color to the whole yard.

Lin Wei didn't go too far inside, she just stood at the entrance and called out, "Is anyone home?"

Less than two minutes after I shouted, someone came out of the room.

It’s no secret that Lin Wei had actually seen this person before. She met him at the Military Family Settlement Office, but the two of them didn’t speak at the time. They just nodded to each other and passed each other by.

It can't be because I didn't say hello to her, right?

This thought flashed through Lin Wei's mind, but the next moment she didn't know whether to laugh or cry. How come she was also led into a ditch by Wang Fangli? She always felt that she was the one who offended her?

Lin Wei shook her head and walked over to ask, "Are you Director Chen Wenfang? I heard from my neighbors when I got home that you were looking for me?"

Apparently Director Chen also remembered Lin Wei. He didn't ask her name, but nodded and said, "I have something to ask you. Come in and sit down." He glanced behind Lin Wei and asked, "Didn't you bring the child?"

"I brought them. They are playing at the door. I'll ask them to come over."

Because she didn't know what Director Chen's temper was like and whether it was a good thing or a bad thing to come to her, Lin Wei asked the two children to wait outside.

But after meeting the person, Lin Wei felt that no matter whether Director Chen was looking for her for a good thing or a bad thing, her temper should not be bad. In addition, she also mentioned her two children, so she turned around and asked the two brothers to come and meet the person.

After Lin Wei left, Mingming stuffed the shells into his pocket and prepared to dig sand with his bare hands. But before he put his hands into the sand, he heard his mother calling him, so he clapped his hands quickly and followed his brother into the yard.

As soon as the two brothers entered the yard, Lin Wei saw their bulging pockets and the sand around them.

If there were no outsiders around, she would definitely have said a few words to them, but Director Chen was watching from the side, so Lin Wei just patted their pants and asked them to call her "Auntie".

The two brothers called out to people in clear voices and showed their signature smiles after they finished speaking. They looked so adorable. Although Ruirui didn't smile, she had a good-looking face and her eyes were bright when she looked at people. Even the coldest-hearted person would soften when seeing them.

Director Chen smiled unconsciously and said in a gentle tone: "It's sunny outside, come in and sit down." He also specifically asked the two children if they wanted some sugar water.

Sugar water is a good thing these days, and Lin Wei's family is not short of sugar, as it is available to people with city household registration. But she was strict and didn't often let the two children drink sugar water, for fear that they would get cavities, so the two brothers drank less.

Therefore, when they heard about the sugar water, the two brothers smiled and said, "Thank you, Auntie!"

Director Chen poured the two brothers a glass of sugar water and asked Lin Wei what she wanted to drink. In addition to sugar water, she also had tea and coffee at home.

Lin Wei doesn't drink tea very often, as drinking too much can cause insomnia. As for coffee, although she has never drunk it, she knows that it is troublesome to brew and tastes bitter, so she has to add sugar. So she said, "Just give me a glass of plain water."

Director Chen responded and went out to the living room to get two glasses of boiled water. He gave one to Lin Wei and took a sip of the other himself.

After moistening his throat, Director Chen sat down on the single sofa and asked casually, "How do you feel about the island?"

Lin Wei also picked up the teacup and took a sip, saying with a smile: "It's good, the place is good, and the people are nice."

Director Chen joked, "After meeting Comrade Gao, do you still think he's a good person?"

Lin Wei didn't expect Director Chen to know about this. She was stunned for a moment and said, "Everyone has their own personality. No matter where you are, there are always people with good personalities and those with not-so-good personalities. At least from yesterday to today, most of the people I met have kind personalities."

"That's true." Director Chen nodded in agreement. Just as he was about to get down to business, he glanced at the two children and saw that they had finished the sugar water. He asked, "Do you want more sugar water?"

This time, the two brothers didn't dare to ask for it. They looked up at Lin Wei with hope in their eyes.

Unfortunately, Lin Wei's answer disappointed them. She first shook her head and said no, then explained: "I'm afraid they will get cavities, so I don't let them eat too much sweets."

Director Chen herself has raised children. Although her children are now very old, she knows all the things that need to be paid attention to when raising children. She smiled and said, "You need to pay attention to children. I'll pour them a glass of water."

After saying that, Director Chen stood up and poured a glass of water for each of the two children.

Although boiled water has no taste, there is still some sugar water residue at the bottom of the unwashed cup. After shaking it, the water in the cup tastes sweet.

But the two brothers had already drunk their fill just now, so they could hardly drink any more of the teacup. They could only sip it, looking left and right, and leaning forward and backward. It was obvious that they were bored.

Lin Wei was talking to Director Chen, and when she saw them like this, she said, "Go play in the yard."

After hearing this, the two brothers felt as if they had been pardoned. They put down their teacups and ran away. Lin Wei couldn't help but shouting, "Don't leave the yard. Don't run too far. Do you understand?"

After shouting, he turned around and said a little embarrassedly: "I'm sorry to have embarrassed you."

As someone who has been through this, Director Chen understands Lin Wei very well: "Raising a child is like this. When they are around, you get annoyed, but when they are out of your sight, you can't help but worry."

"Yes." Lin Wei let out a long breath, then remembered the important matter and asked, "By the way, what is the reason you want me to come here? I heard from the neighbors that you are in a hurry."

"It's like this. Xiao Hu from our hospital's pharmacy is going back to his hometown. No one is taking his job, and the Military Dependents Resettlement Office doesn't have a suitable candidate," Director Chen put down his teacup, looked at Lin Wei and asked, "I heard that you graduated from high school?"

After understanding what Director Chen meant, Lin Wei's expression became serious and she confessed honestly, "I have a high school diploma, but I was actually in school for less than two months before classes were suspended. Later, when elementary and junior high schools resumed classes, we didn't reopen."

In 1968, the school issued graduation certificates to all the high school students from the first to the third year of high school, and then arranged for them to go to the countryside.

After getting the certificate, Lin Wei did not go to other places to join the team, but worked as a scorer in their team. Later, she took over her mother-in-law's job in the cotton mill and became a warehouse manager.

Lin Wei continued to do this job until she joined the army.

These were written in Lin Wei's file, and Director Chen already knew about them, but she didn't interrupt. After listening to Lin Wei's story, she asked, "How do you think you are doing as a warehouse manager?"

Lin Wei said confidently: "I think I'm doing a good job. During my time working at the cotton mill, I never missed a shipment, and I never lost a single item."

"So, you think you are very meticulous in your work?" Director Chen raised his eyebrows.

Lin Wei nodded affirmatively: "Yes."

Director Chen changed the subject and asked, "Do you think you are qualified for the job of hospital pharmacist?"

Although she was prepared, Lin Wei was still a little stunned when she confirmed it, and explained: "I have never been to a medical school, and I don't have any relevant work experience."

"It's okay. I will arrange someone to guide you after you join the company. All you need to do is to be serious. Be serious when learning, and be even more serious after you get the hang of it. Can you do it?" Director Chen looked at Lin Wei and asked.

Lin Wei was a little hesitant.

Of course she hopes to have a job. Although their family does not have much financial pressure now, it is better for two working people than for Zong Shao to support the family alone.

But she had just arrived on the island with the army and had a lot of things to do, not to mention that she had two children at home... and she had to tell Zong Shao about such a big thing.

Seeing Lin Wei's hesitation, Director Chen said, "If you have any concerns, please tell me."

Upon hearing this, Lin Wei immediately spoke out her thoughts like pouring beans.

"You just arrived, so you need to clean up the house. How about this, I'll give you three days to finish your personal affairs before you go to work."

"As for the children, you can take them to the hospital, as long as it doesn't affect your work. In addition, the pharmacy has fixed working hours, from 8 am to 6 pm, with a one and a half hour break at noon. The cafeteria provides three meals a day, so it shouldn't interfere with your taking care of them."

"You don't have to rush to give me an answer. Go back and discuss it with the child's father tonight and give me an answer tomorrow."

Director Chen thought Lin Wei's concerns were not a problem at all. He solved them in a few words and asked, "Do you have any other questions?"

Lin Wei quickly shook her head: "No, do you have anything else to do?"

Director Chen smiled and said, "No, you can think about it carefully when you go back. When you have made up your mind, come to my house and find me."

"Okay, then I'll go back first?" Lin Wei stood up and said.

"Be careful on the road."

Director Chen was very efficient and decisive in his work. He settled the matter in a flash, so much so that Lin Wei was a little dazed after she left.

Of course, she was not unhappy at all. After all, she could easily guess that the job in the hospital pharmacy would be very popular. It was lucky for her, a young military wife who hadn't even got a household registration, to get it!
