Chapter 75 [Unexpectedly Saving Sevier]
In the middle of the night, a sudden clap of thunder woke Mela from her sleep.
The cold white light flickered on the bed, and rain soon began to fall outside the window.
With a "bang," the window, which wasn't closed properly, was flung open by the wind, and rainwater rushed in instantly.
Without a doubt, it must be because Silas carelessly left a crack in the window when he came back last night.
Mela had to get up and go close the window.
Large raindrops pelted her face, and the wind whipped Mela's hair wildly. As she closed the window, she glanced down casually and saw a group of four or five people hurriedly knocking on the hostel's door.
Behind them were two horse-drawn carriages loaded with goods.
Perhaps they encountered an accident on the way here; the hood was gone, so Mela could clearly see the wooden barrels piled up inside the car, but she didn't know what was inside.
Just as Mela was about to look away, she noticed out of the corner of her eye that a wooden barrel seemed to have moved slightly.
Strange, is it just my imagination?
Mela glanced at the carriage again, and her eyes met those of one of the men who had looked up.
He probably realized that Meera was looking at the carriage behind him, and his eyes suddenly turned fierce.
Mela pretended to be startled and closed the window completely, but then fell into deep thought behind it.
I felt that the man's gaze earlier was less of a threat and more like something unspeakable was hidden in those wooden barrels, so I was afraid she would notice something was amiss.
After a while, Mela heard a noise coming from the stairs, probably the shop owner leading those men upstairs.
Coincidentally, they happened to live in one of the last few rooms on this floor.
"Mera... what are you doing standing by the window instead of sleeping?" Silas rolled over on the pillow, subconsciously feeling that the space next to him seemed a bit empty. So he groggily opened his eyes and, sure enough, saw that Mela was not in bed.
"nothing."
Mela lay back down on the bed with the blankets pulled back, deciding that even if she wanted to meddle, she would have to wait until Mela woke up.
Perhaps because she had something on her mind, Mela woke up almost as soon as the rain stopped.
It was still early before sunrise, and apart from the shop owners, who had just gotten up to work for their guests, only Mela came down the stairs.
She went to the courtyard behind the inn and easily found the two carriages with their canopies missing that she had seen the night before.
Mela circled the two carriages but found nothing wrong. With her hearing, she would have heard anything coming from inside the carriages.
Just as I was thinking this, a faint sound came from one of the carriages.
The sound was muffled and very soft; it was easy to miss if you weren't paying attention.
Mela cautiously looked around and, finding no one else had arrived yet, opened the carriage door.
However, the sound suddenly stopped the moment she opened the door.
Mela could only rely on her senses to locate several barrels that might be the source of the sound, and opened them one by one.
When the first two barrels were opened, she was silently surprised to find that they contained expensive spices.
When they reached the third barrel, Mela was even more surprised to find it completely empty, with only a few powdered spices left on the barrel walls.
As the fourth barrel was about to be opened, Mela couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation. What would be inside?
Then, unexpectedly, she met the gaze of a pair of reddened eyes.
*
"Boss, we should go."
If Mela were here, she would recognize that the man who was meekly calling another gray-haired man "boss" was the same man she had stared at last night.
To accommodate the gray-haired man's height, he even bent over slightly, adopting a humble and subservient posture, seemingly unaware of the two disdainful gazes directed at him from behind.
"Yes, you're right. We should leave as soon as possible, preferably back to Gardner territory. Once we've completed the task assigned by the Earl, you'll certainly reap the rewards."
The gray-haired man, however, was clearly swayed by this, a look of certainty on his face.
He naturally felt that everything was a sure thing.
Three days ago, the gray-haired man received a message secretly sent by Count Gardner, instructing him to find a way to bring Prince Severi out of the palace without alerting anyone.
As a trusted servant of Seviri, the gray-haired man only needed to casually urge him on with a few words, and Seviri would immediately take the bait like a foolish fish, deciding to secretly leave the palace behind Elia's back.
Normally, with the abilities of a six-year-old child like Severi, it would have been impossible for him to sneak out under Elijah's nose, but Elijah spoils him.
Elijah, knowing he only wanted to compete with Lex, turned a blind eye to his attempt to sneak out and try to persuade Fernando to become her teacher.
Anyway, with people arranged by Elijah secretly following behind him and escorting him back and forth, Elijah was not worried that anything would happen to Sevier.
So this time, as always, Sevier had his maid prepare a carriage for him and swaggered away from the palace.
Of course, his success was entirely due to the gray-haired man.
These are extraordinary times, and if it weren't for the fact that Elia was so busy that she would want to keep Seviri by her side, she would never have let him leave the palace.
As for Elia's outburst upon learning of Sevier's disappearance, smashing several vases and dragging away all the anxious maids, that was beyond the gray-haired man's consideration.
In short, the carriage carrying Severi drove away from the palace and further and further away from the royal city.
Knowing it would take two more days to reach Furhorst Manor, Severi ate his snacks and then took a leisurely nap in the carriage.
Based on his past experience, once he woke up, he could stay overnight at the largest inn along the way.
However, when Severi woke up, he found himself with his hands and feet tied with rope, his mouth gagged with a handkerchief, and stuffed into a dark wooden barrel with only a small gap deliberately left to let in some air to prevent him from accidentally suffocating.
When Severi realized he had been captured by unknown people, his first reaction wasn't fear, but rage. He kicked his legs angrily, making quite a commotion in the barrel, hoping that this would attract someone to rescue him.
Whenever he made a fuss like this, several maids would immediately surround him to coax him, as if they could pluck the stars and the moon from his heart if he wanted them.
Unfortunately, this time no one paid any attention to the furious Severi.
Hearing the commotion behind him, the gray-haired man glanced impatiently at his men who had come to join him. The most obsequious of them immediately lashed the barrel where Sevier was with his whip, warning him in a harsh voice not to cause any more trouble.
Sevier sometimes even contradicts Elijah, so how could he possibly obey anyone else's orders? Hearing this, he became even more aggressive.
Dealing with a mere brat doesn't require any fancy tricks. The gray-haired man simply starved Sevier for a day, starving him so he wouldn't have the energy to cause any trouble.
Sure enough, a day later, Severi fell completely silent.
If it weren't for the sudden downpour last night, which brought with it a gust of wind that blew the hood off the car, they wouldn't have changed their route halfway and ended up passing through this little-known town.
The gray-haired man couldn't wait to get back to Gardner territory and report to Count Gardner.
So the four of them drove away in pairs in a carriage, completely unaware of the fleeting glimpse of a pair of eerie green eyes behind a crack in a window on the second floor of the inn.
After watching the four men leave, Silas called Yuriel from her room.
Yuriel was a little confused when Silas suddenly knocked on the window. She wanted to ask Silas what had happened, but he hesitated and wouldn't say anything.
"What's all this about, all this so mysterious?" Yuriel knocked on Mela's door, but her smile froze when she saw the boy behind Mela.
In this land, only children who inherit the bloodline of Nurengel possess the unique golden hair and golden eyes. Without a doubt, the boy sitting in the chair, maintaining his arrogance even when facing Yuriel, is a member of the royal family.
"To make a long story short, I rescued a child whose last name happens to be Nurengel," Mela said slowly, seemingly oblivious to Yuriel's odd expression.
Silas silently covered its eyes with its wings, afraid that it would be caught in the crossfire if Yuriel and Mela started arguing.
Silas's eyes widened in surprise as soon as he saw Mela lead Civili back to his room.
It pointed at Severi with its wing, stammering for a long time: "He, he, he... he's Lex's brother, his younger brother?"
Although Silas later carefully examined Siviri and didn't find any resemblance between him and Lex, the distinctive blond hair and golden eyes of the Nurenger royal family were too easy to recognize, making their blood relationship undeniable.
“That’s right.” Mela hadn’t expected that her casual act of saving Lex’s brother would lead to this, and her expression became somewhat complicated.
She didn't want to get involved in the so-called battle for the throne, but now it seems she's being dragged deeper and deeper into this quagmire.
"You know that jerk?" Upon hearing Lex's name, Severi immediately became hostile and said to Silas with a disdainful look.
“You’re the one who’s annoying! Mela and I are on Lex’s side!” Silas firmly stated his position.
In terms of first come, first served, Severi has no say.
"You, you, you were an accomplice of that jerk too!" Severi jumped back, pointing at Mela with his finger, looking like he had been greatly shocked.
He never expected that Mela, who saved him, was actually in cahoots with Lex. Could it be that Mela saved him for ulterior motives?
"You, you, you, you rude brat! Even if I know Lex, it doesn't mean I'm your savior. Speak properly!" Mela hadn't tolerated Lex's princely temper before, so she was even less likely to tolerate Severi now.
That said, I don't know how Elia raised her child, she managed to raise Severi to be so annoying.
Even when he was saved, he wouldn't properly thank her. Instead, he arrogantly told Mela, "I'll remember your kindness and will definitely reward you later." Mela immediately smacked him on the head. This guy was nowhere near as good as Lex was when he was a kid.
"How dare you hit my head!" Sevier sobbed, clutching his head.
“I’ve already knocked, so what? If you don’t talk properly, I’ll keep knocking,” Mela threatened menacingly.
She used to occasionally call Lex "Your Highness" as a deliberate teasing, wanting to see his helpless expression, rather than genuinely regarding him as a prince to be looked up to.
So what if he's a prince? Even if the king came, Mela wouldn't think much of him because of that.
After Mela disciplined him, Severi finally calmed down a bit and at least knew to sit obediently in his chair and follow Mela's instructions.
Mela looked at Silas, "Go and call Yuriel over. As her companion, I must tell her about Severi."
However, Silas dawdled and refused to move more than a few steps. "Do we really have to tell her? You didn't let Lex see us before because you were worried that Yuriel would be angry if she saw him. Why are you letting her see Severi now?"
Isn't Mela afraid that Yuriel will fly into a rage after seeing Severi?
“At worst, we can just give this annoying brat some money and let him find someone reliable himself, right?” Silas thought his suggestion was pretty good, his eyes sparkling as he looked at Mela.
"Do you think that if a piece of gold were left to roam the streets, more people would return it to its rightful owner or keep it for themselves?" Mela raised an eyebrow and asked Silas a question.
Clearly, Severi is such a remarkable piece of gold.
But his blond hair and golden eyes were so distinctive that no one could mistake him for someone else.
Otherwise, Mela wouldn't have needed to tell Yuriel about this; if she wanted to travel with Severi, she would have needed Yuriel's permission first.
"Alright, we've saved him, so it won't make a difference if we take him a little further." Mela poked Silas's cheek, without mentioning that they were originally heading to the royal city anyway. "Let's go."
"Alright then." Silas reluctantly agreed. After all, Mela was its owner, so it had no choice but to spoil her.
Ultimately, it's all because Sevier is a troublemaker.
As a staunch supporter of Lex, Silas wasn't going to give Civil a friendly look, especially since he had been so rude to it from the very first meeting!
