Chapter 97 [The Witch and the Frog (Part 1)]...
*Inspired by fairy tales
"Mera, what are you holding? A frog? Ugh, how disgusting!"
Silas was about to fly up to greet Mela, who was returning from her trip, when she suddenly made eye contact with the frog trapped in the jar. Startled, she froze in mid-air.
Those eyes are terrifying.
Silas had always felt that the huge, bulging eyes on the heads of both frogs and toads, which looked like two bulges, were terrifying.
It's to the point that just looking at it for a moment will give you nightmares.
However, Mela thought Silas was making a fuss over nothing. "Don't you think there's something different about this frog compared to the others?"
no the same?
What's different?
Silas tilted his head and looked left and right, but he felt that apart from its golden skin, this frog was no different from an ordinary frog.
“Look how quiet it is.” Mela suddenly bent her index finger and tapped the surface of the jar. The golden frog inside remained motionless.
"Maybe this is just a fool among frogs..." Silas muttered to himself, which is why he didn't react to the noise Mela was making.
However, Silas asked curiously, "Why did you specifically catch a frog like this?"
I've never seen Mela like these slimy animals before.
Well, this brings us to the record that Mela saw a few days ago in a journal kept in the basement.
"The notebook says that each golden frog can spit out a drop of golden saliva. If you put it in the eyes of a blind person, the blind can regain their sight; if you put it in the ears of a deaf person, the deaf can regain their hearing; if you put it in the throat of a mute person, the mute can speak again. Isn't that amazing?"
Although no one in Mela's life has yet needed such a magical drop of golden saliva, that doesn't stop her from quickly catching the golden frog mentioned in the journal when she happened to encounter it, stuffing it into a jar and bringing it back.
After all, she was lucky this time; who knows when she'll meet him again?
"How can we make it spit out golden saliva?"
After hearing Mela's words, Silas's curiosity overcame his disgust for the frog, and he even pressed his face against the jar to carefully observe the motionless, statue-like golden frog.
It seems I still don't find anything particularly special about it?
Does being particularly dull count?
"What are you talking about?" Lex asked as he came out of the house.
He had just heard Mela's footsteps approaching, but the soup he was making was boiling and bubbling with white foam, so Lex abandoned his plan to go out and greet Mela, and let Silas fly away happily instead.
Lex served the soup, while Mela and Silas remained outside chatting.
Left with no other option, Lex went out and reminded them that dinner was ready.
“We were talking about this frog.” Mela lifted the jar up so Lex could see the golden frog inside clearly.
Lex neither feared nor disliked frogs, though he wouldn't say he liked them either.
However, since this golden frog was brought back by Mela, it also has a small piece of land of its own in this room.
Lex placed the jar containing it on a chest of drawers covered with a layer of lace.
Just before going to sleep, Lex and Mela made a point of checking again to see if the lid was loose.
Otherwise, when they are all fast asleep at night, it can quietly push open the lid and jump out to escape successfully.
“Speaking of which, its color is quite similar to your hair color,” Mela suddenly said.
She glanced at Lex, then at the golden frog, and after careful comparison, concluded that they were indeed very similar.
They all have a color as brilliant as gold.
Judging by its appearance alone, many curious merchants or nobles might be willing to buy such a golden frog to keep as a pet.
"Perhaps it really is one of my ancestors who originally intended to become human but unfortunately became a frog instead," Lex said, making a rare little joke with Mela.
Mela giggled. "If you accidentally turn into a frog someday, I won't mind."
A look of helplessness crossed Lex's face. "Hopefully, that day will never come. After all, being a frog isn't as convenient as being a human."
People wouldn't approve of a frog as their king.
However, neither Mela nor Lex noticed that while they were laughing and joking, the golden frog in the jar was staring at them without moving until they had completely disappeared from the attic, at which point its eyes finally blinked.
*
The next morning, Mela opened her eyes lazily as usual. Sunlight streamed in through the window, illuminating the intricately carved wooden board at the foot of the bed and the layers of soft bedding on the bed.
Mela rolled over in the thin blankets, then her eyes widened in surprise.
She never imagined that a golden frog would be lying on the down-filled pillow next to her.
Did it accidentally escape from the jar last night? Mela wondered.
She picked up the frog with both hands and trotted down from the attic. Just as she was about to call out "Lex," she discovered that Lex was unusually absent from the house today.
There was no aroma of food wafting from the dining table at the other end of the room, as if Lex had completely forgotten to prepare breakfast.
This is unlike Lex Luthor.
Mela approached the dresser with a puzzled look and found that the lid was still closed properly, but the golden frog that should have been inside the jar was gone.
Just then, the frog in Mela's hand woke up. It curiously raised its webbed feet, looked around at itself, and finally raised its face to meet Mela's gaze, a visible look of shock flashing in its eyes.
"Caw!" It opened its mouth, trying to say something, but only managed to utter an unintelligible cry.
However, it refused to give up and croaked twice more.
Mela could sense its urgency, which deepened her doubts.
At the same time, a bold conjecture came to her mind.
“Are you… Lex?” Mela held the frog up to her eyes and examined it carefully.
Although I couldn't see any difference between it and the frog I caught yesterday—their skin was exactly the same golden color—the affection I felt from the bottom of my heart was genuine.
Mela subtly felt that even if the frog broke her favorite plate, she would smile and forgive it.
Besides, surely no frog that has successfully escaped would deliberately sleep next to her so that she could catch it again?
Hearing Mela's words, the frog, oh no, Lex, nodded happily, his anxiety when he woke up to find himself suddenly turned into a frog was instantly soothed.
Although we don't know what happened to cause him to become like this, since Mela is a witch, she should be able to find a way to turn him back, right?
Mela... Mela has never seen Lex in this state before.
She couldn't understand why Lex had suddenly turned into a frog.
But to avoid upsetting Lex, Mela pretended to be nonchalant and put him on her shoulder.
"After we have breakfast, we'll go to the basement and look around. Maybe we'll find a solution in one of the books," Mela said confidently.
Even if there are only a few words in the book, it's much better than being completely clueless right now.
Speaking of breakfast.
Although Lex was very reluctant to continue making those unpleasant noises, he had to innocently croak to remind Mela.
Oh right, Mela suddenly realized that Lex couldn't cook in his current state, which meant she would have to find a way to feed herself and Silas.
Wait a minute, where's Silas?
At that very moment, Silas, who was far away searching for wild fruit to eat, suddenly sneezed.
"Strange, could it be that I left the window too wide open last night and caught a cold?" Silas muttered, puzzled.
Then it shook its head and continued to peck at the small, bright red berries on the branch, which were about the size of a thumb.
Meanwhile, Silas couldn't help but continue to condemn Lex in his heart.
I don't know what's wrong with Lex today, he actually stayed in bed with Mela.
The sun is high in the sky and there's still no sign of them.
Unable to bear the hunger any longer, Silas had no choice but to fly out to find food.
Sigh! Silas let out a heavy sigh, then fiercely pecked off a fruit and swallowed it whole.
