Chapter 46

Outside the pub, medical staff were kneeling on the ground, providing emergency treatment to Yu Pan's head wound, which was constantly bleeding.

Ling Luo slumped to the side, gripping Yu Pan's icy hands tightly. He had never been so afraid before, his voice trembling uncontrollably: "Yu Pan... wake up, don't sleep! Don't close your eyes, Yu Pan!"

Yu Pan felt his head buzzing and waves of dizziness washing over him. The wound on his forehead didn't hurt much, but the warm liquid kept running down his face and blurring his vision.

He barely opened his other eye and looked at the small lamp hanging at the entrance of the tavern. Yu Pan opened his mouth, wanting to say to Ling Luo, "I'm fine," but no sound came out of his throat.

"Panpan!"

It was Shen Yanzhou's voice.

Yu Pan blinked, suddenly remembering that she had read in some miscellaneous book before that people would have auditory hallucinations before they died, and would see a revolving lantern of their entire life and the person they most wanted to see.

"Panpan!"

The sound was much clearer this time.

No way... He doesn't want to die yet. He still has so much to say to Shen Yanzhou. He should have talked to Shen Yanzhou more at noon... He still wants to see Shen Yanzhou and hear his voice again.

"Panpan!" Shen Yanzhou had already rushed to the stretcher, staggered and knelt down. He looked at Yu Pan's face covered in blood, and his heart ached so much that he could hardly breathe.

Shen Yanzhou's hands trembled as he wanted to touch Yu Pan's face but dared not. "Panpan, look at me, Panpan..."

This illusion... feels so real.

Yu Pan strained to focus his vision and barely made out Shen Yanzhou's face. The more he thought about it, the sadder he became, thinking that he was really on his deathbed.

With all his might, he raised his hand to touch Shen Yanzhou's face, a surge of grievance and regret welling up inside him. "Brother... I'm sorry, I shouldn't have hung up on you at noon... I don't want to die..."

Shen Yanzhou grasped Yu Pan's hand that was resting on his face; its icy temperature startled him. "Brother isn't blaming you, don't talk nonsense, you won't die! Brother's here, we'll go to the hospital right now. Panpan, watch me, don't sleep... be good..."

"The injured person needs to be taken to the hospital immediately, family members follow!" After completing the initial bandaging, the medical staff quickly lifted the stretcher.

Shen Yanzhou immediately got up and followed the car closely. Just as the car door was about to close, the medical staff noticed Ling Luo, who was still sitting on the ground with bruises on his face, and called out, "Young man, come up here too, let us treat your wounds!"

Inside the ambulance, Ling Luo huddled to one side, letting the nurse wipe the blood and bruises from his face; the alcohol made him grimace.

Opposite him, Shen Yanzhou lay hunched over the stretcher, his eyes red and looking extremely disheveled.

Ling Luo had only met Shen Yanzhou once. In his memory, this man was not very talkative, but he cared about Yu Pan a lot, always answered her questions, and had the demeanor of an unquestionable protector of Yu Pan.

Faced with Shen Yanzhou's utter disarray, Ling Luo was terrified and overwhelmed by guilt. He licked his chapped lips and timidly began, "Brother Shen... I'm sorry... It's all my fault. If it weren't for me..."

"Shut up." Shen Yanzhou didn't even raise his head, his voice as cold as iron. He tightly wrapped Yu Pan's hands in his own, pressing them to his lips, his gaze fixed on Yu Pan's pale face.

The light blue shirt was something he had personally dressed Yu Pan in this morning. His Panpan had fair skin, and wearing light-colored clothes would make him look clean and handsome. Now, most of the shirt was stained with blood.

He doesn't want to hear a single word now; any explanation or apology is meaningless. All he wants is for his Panpan to be safe.

Upon arriving at the hospital, Yu Pan was wheeled into the examination room, while Shen Yanzhou stood outside the door, his back stiff.

Ling Luo endured the pain in her body, staggered to the hospital's duty room, borrowed a phone, called her brother, briefly explained that she had gotten into trouble and was now in the hospital, and then returned to the examination room door in a daze.

His injuries had already been treated briefly in the ambulance. Ling Luo lowered his head, not daring to look at Shen Yanzhou, and just stared at the tips of his shoes. Regardless of whether the other party was listening or not, he recounted the whole story in detail.

From how she dragged Yu Pan to the tavern to join in the fun, to how she unfortunately ran into an old enemy, from the other party's verbal provocation to how she stubbornly retorted because she couldn't bear to lose face, the conversation got uglier and uglier.

Yu Pan repeatedly tried to persuade him to let it go, then recounted how she had acted impulsively and ultimately provoked the other party to attack... Five against two, they were surrounded and shoved, and when they fought back, the other party grabbed a bottle and attacked them from behind... Yu Pan shielded him from the blow...

"I'm sorry... Brother Shen... I really didn't expect it to turn out like this. I didn't mean to implicate Yu Pan..." Ling Luo's voice grew softer and softer.

Before he could finish speaking, Shen Yanzhou suddenly turned around, and the next second, a large hand grabbed Ling Luo's collar like an iron clamp and slammed him against the cold wall with a muffled "bang".

Ling Luo's back ached from the impact, her breath caught in her throat, and her toes lifted off the ground.

Shen Yanzhou's knuckles pressed against his throat, not enough to suffocate him, but the pain in his back instantly filled Ling Luo with fear.

Shen Yanzhou lowered his eyes, his voice icy: "You think I'll pretend nothing happened just because you say 'I'm sorry'?"

Ling Luo was so frightened that his whole body stiffened, and he even forgot to shed tears. He could only stare in terror at the man in front of him who seemed like he could be torn to pieces at any moment.

"Ling Luo!" Ling Xiao had just arrived in the corridor when he saw a tall man pinning his younger brother against the wall like a chick. He was about to yell at him when he saw the man's profile and paused, "Chen Gong?"

Upon hearing this, Shen Yanzhou loosened his grip and glanced at the business partner who had been laughing and joking at the dinner table that evening. He didn't speak, but the lingering anger in his eyes made Ling Xiao realize the seriousness of the situation.

He quickly pulled the terrified Ling Luo behind him and asked in a low voice, "What happened? Explain yourself!"

Ling Luo, still shaken, repeated what she had just said to Shen Yanzhou in a trembling voice, her words choked with sobs.

Ling Xiao's face grew increasingly pale as he listened, so angry that he raised his hand to slap him, but ultimately held back, gritting his teeth and cursing, "You son of a bitch! Can't you live a day without causing trouble? Huh? What did you promise me before you transferred schools?"

Ling Xiao took several deep breaths, forcibly suppressing his anger, and turned to walk to Shen Yanzhou's side. "Engineer Shen, this was Ling Luo's fault. I will discipline him properly. As for those bastards who laid a hand on them, I will also..."

“I hope President Ling will keep his word.” Shen Yanzhou interrupted him, his voice calm, his gaze never leaving the closed door. “Those people, President Ling need not trouble yourself, I will handle them myself.”

Ling Xiao breathed a slight sigh of relief. "Okay."

Shortly after, the examination room door opened.

The test results finally came out: Yu Pan had a mild concussion and the wound on her forehead required five stitches. She needed to be hospitalized for observation and anti-inflammatory treatment.

Shen Yanzhou looked at Yu Pan, who was lying on the hospital bed with a pale face, and nodded.

-

Yu Pan felt as if he had been in a long, endless dream, and he seemed to have turned back into his little self.

In that huge garden in Beijing, he played hide-and-seek with Shen Yanzhou. He was so short and small, while the lotus leaves in the pond were as big as umbrellas. He ran to the rockery, where there was a hole, and he crawled inside.

To his surprise, the cave entrance led to a series of stinking garbage heaps. He was very hungry, but after searching through the garbage, he couldn't find anything to eat. He also smelled terrible, and passersby chased him away.

He returned to the altar where he usually slept. Not long after, a beggar ate some kind of grass and died of stomach pain. His body stank in the house... Later, a new beggar came. He was very fierce and drove him away.

He walked a long, long way, and was exhausted and hungry, until he finally saw Uncle Chen sitting on the edge of the field eating...

So this is what a revolving lantern looks like... Yu Pan thought dazedly, taking short steps toward Uncle Chen.

Uncle Chen took a bite of rice and looked up in surprise: "Panpan? What are you doing here?"

"I've come to find you," Yu Pan heard herself say, her voice crisp and clear.

"Wow! Our Panpan can talk!" Uncle Chen exclaimed in surprise and delight, putting down his bowl and calling out into the distance, "Ajuan, come and see! Our Panpan can talk!"

"What are you shouting about!" Aunt Chen stood up straight, put her hand to her forehead and looked over, her face showing surprise. "Panpan? What brings you here?"

“I’ve come to find you,” Yu Pan replied with a smile.

Aunt Chen walked over, squatted down, and gently brushed the little boy's sweaty hair aside. Her eyes were gentle yet filled with worry. "Panpan is here. What about your brother?"

Yu Pan was stunned, and her brows furrowed.

Yes, what should Shen Yanzhou do? He can't leave his brother alone.

"Panpan, listen to me, you go back first." Uncle Chen patted his head with his big hand. "If you don't leave, your brother will worry."

Go back? Go back where?

Yu Pan was somewhat bewildered. Before he could figure it out, the sky suddenly darkened, and Uncle Shen and Aunt Shen were getting further and further away from him.

He panicked and took off after him, but he couldn't catch up no matter what he did...

-

Yu Pan was awakened by a blinding white light.

When he came to his senses, he came into close eye contact with a doctor who was examining his pupils with a small flashlight.

He shuddered violently, calling out at the same time, "Brother..."

The doctor was startled by his sudden reaction, then smiled kindly and put away the small flashlight. "Are you dizzy? Do you feel nauseous?"

Yu Pan hadn't fully grasped the situation yet, blinked blankly, and called out "Brother."

"Here, brother's here." The ward door was pushed open almost immediately, and Shen Yanzhou, who had obviously been waiting outside, rushed in despite the nurses' attempts to stop him.

He strode to the bedside and held Yu Pan's hand, which wasn't receiving an IV drip. "I'm here, Pan Pan, don't be afraid."

Feeling the warmth and pressure from her hand, Yu Pan's panicked emotions calmed down slightly.

"Are you dizzy? Do you feel nauseous and want to vomit?" the doctor asked patiently again.

Yu Pan acted as if she hadn't heard, and just stared at Shen Yanzhou.

"Panpan, where do you feel uncomfortable? Tell your brother, tell the doctor." Shen Yanzhou's voice was terribly hoarse, but it sounded very gentle.

Yu Pan then fully regained consciousness and felt a dull pain in his forehead. He honestly answered the doctor's question: "I feel a little dizzy and nauseous."

The doctor nodded, taking notes as he said, "A mild concussion typically presents with symptoms such as dizziness and nausea. The patient may also experience some drowsiness for the next few days and will need to be hospitalized for observation for two days."

Upon hearing about being hospitalized, Yu Pan flinched. Shen Yanzhou noticed his unease and squeezed his hand, saying, "It's okay, I'll stay with you."

These words were like a reassuring pill; Yu Pan hummed in agreement and relaxed.

The doctor gave some more instructions and then left the ward.

As soon as the door closed, the room fell silent. Shen Yanzhou sat down on the edge of the bed, still holding Yu Pan's hand tightly, his eyes glued to Yu Pan's face.

"Brother..." Yu Pan felt a little uncomfortable under his gaze and asked softly, "Are you... alright?"

Did he scare Shen Yanzhou to death?

Upon hearing this, Shen Yanzhou was filled with mixed emotions.

His Panpan, despite being so badly injured herself, woke up and the first thing she said was to care about him.

Shen Yanzhou lowered his head, his forehead pressed against their clasped hands, and remained silent for a while before saying in a trembling voice, "Panpan, you scared your brother to death."

Yu Pan had never heard Shen Yanzhou speak in such a tone before. In his heart, Shen Yanzhou was always powerful and omnipotent.

Hearing his trembling voice, Yu Pan felt a pang of sadness. She raised her other hand, which was still receiving an IV drip, and touched Shen Yanzhou's hair, just as Shen Yanzhou had comforted her when they were children.

"I'm sorry, brother," Yu Pan said softly, "I won't do it again."
