It took several large handkerchiefs to barely dry Shu Yun's long black hair. Jiang Yan felt a soreness in his wrist. He folded the soaked handkerchief and put it in the wooden basin before leaving his master's room.
The moment he stepped out the door, he mustered his courage and looked up to carefully examine his master's expression. How could he read such a sensual novel with such a nonchalant expression?
Jiang Yan undoubtedly suffered from insomnia that night, his mind filled with images of his aloof and detached master reading folk tales with an expressionless face.
After the initial surprise, I felt a strange excitement. It seemed only my master knew that he loved reading storybooks? Did Feng Ziyi know this?
In any case, he seems to know a little more about his aloof master. If only this is something that others don't know, then it's a secret that only he knows.
The next day, Feng Fu sent a message saying that he had asked for a day off for Feng Ziyi, and Shu Yun gladly agreed.
It's probably the Feng couple dragging Feng Ziyi to Guan Qin to make their presence known again. She wished she could help them get Feng Ziyi to Guan Qin; the sooner Guan Qin accepted him, the sooner she would be free.
She had already planned it all out. After Feng Ziyi was taken under Guan Qin's tutelage, she would use the excuse of traveling to escape, find a place to bury this dead mortal body, and return to her carefree Penglai.
Guan Qin was highly skilled and knowledgeable; it wouldn't be an exaggeration to call him a talent-generating machine, as all his disciples were quite famous.
As for Jiang Yan, she set up this courtyard, so she'll leave it to him. She'll also leave him all the wealth she's accumulated in the mortal realm over the past few years. The Feng family's rewards are generous, and if she's frugal, it'll be enough for him.
With a house to shelter from the rain and money to live on, Jiang Yan's future should not be difficult.
Forced to stay in the human world for the past few years, apart from the wonton shop in the alley that she really liked, the rest of the places made her feel incredibly stifled.
She lay back on the soft couch, hoping that Feng Ziyi would prove himself and quickly win Guan Qin's favor. She had taught him everything she should and shouldn't have over the years, so please hurry up!
To everyone's surprise, the Feng family had been pestering Guan Qin for almost half a month, but Guan Qin still wouldn't budge.
Shu Yun paced anxiously around the room, wishing she could rush up to that old man Guan Qin, grab his beard, and beat him up.
She's pretentious and affected; just looking at her makes me angry.
“Master.” Jiang Yan stood by the door, holding a book in his hands, and took in her frowning expression.
He knew what was bothering her; it was nothing more than the matter of Feng Ziyi. His master also wanted him to become Guan Qin's disciple.
After all, he had been a disciple for many years, and the master still cared about Feng Ziyi.
"What's wrong?" Shu Yun looked at him and noticed the book in his hand. "Ask away."
After he stopped going to the academy, she took over Jiang Yan's studies. However, he was more intelligent than she had imagined. He was perceptive and insightful, and could easily integrate the contents of different books.
She was somewhat curious about how much merit he had accumulated in his previous lives to be so clever. However, she was acting in a borrowed body, and with her status as a goddess, she was beyond the workings of the mortal world. According to his original destiny, he should still be mired in the quagmire.
Thinking about it this way, it doesn't seem like someone who had good deeds in a past life.
Jiang Yan walked over and asked the questions.
Shu Yun glanced at the back of the book and decided to explain everything at once. She flipped through the book, picking out the important parts, those with unfamiliar characters, and the difficult parts to explain, leaving the simple and easy parts for Jiang Yan to read on his own.
Jiang Yan was secretly delighted. If Feng Ziyi became Guan Qin's apprentice and studied under him, then his master would be his own, and he wouldn't have to spend all his days watching over Feng Ziyi anymore.
His secret joy was ruthlessly shattered one day when Guan Qin arrived uninvited.
Guan Qin knocked on the courtyard door as the crimson sunset painted the entire sky, his voice carrying a hint of weariness from his journey.
"You mean you're willing to take Feng Ziyi as your apprentice, but on the condition that Jiang Yan also becomes your apprentice?"
Shu Yun leaned back in her chair, her slender, fair fingers tapping lightly on the armrest, making a soft "tap-tap" sound.
Jiang Yan had glared at Guan Qin the moment he made the suggestion, his eyes filled with fierce emotions. His dark gaze made Guan Qin feel that if Shu Yun hadn't been there, this young man would have attacked him without hesitation.
Instead of getting angry, he laughed, showing no sign of nervousness, and said to Jiang Yan, "Don't be in a hurry, let's see what your master has to say."
Jiang Yan coldly withdrew his gaze and turned to look at his master. His fingers, hanging at his sides, clenched quietly, and his body was taut, his tension obvious.
His master's silence made him uneasy. He didn't care about the path to success or any easily attainable official position or fame. He just wanted to stay by his master's side.
"Jiang Yan, you can go out first."
A clear, melodious voice rang out; it was a voice he was familiar with.
He stood straight in place, head bowed, soft bangs brushing against his beautiful and handsome eyebrows. He stood upright, like a giant tree that had taken deep root and could not be moved easily.
But in the end, he went out, closed the door behind him, and leaned weakly against the side, leaving his fate to the people inside.
He grew up surrounded by cosmetics, where no one could see into another's heart beneath thick makeup. Prostitutes greeted him with smiles and feigned flattery, while clients pretended to be deeply affectionate and spent money like water. In that place, he always remained subservient and allowed himself to be mocked.
He also had moments of resentment. Watching the high-ranking officials and nobles surrounded by their cronies, lavishly spending money on the girls in the brothels, he also thought about secretly using some means to escape that place, escape his lowly status, and start anew.
But Sister Liu'er's denunciation plunged him into an abyss of no return.
