Chapter Four



Jiang Yan obediently leaned against her. A light drizzle surrounded them, and pedestrians hurried home, no one wanting to linger in the rain. The cobblestones were riddled with potholes, accumulating rainwater. A careless step could be disastrous; clothes would be stained with splashed water, and shoes would be soaked.

His clothes were already soaked through, and Jiang Yan's fingertips were white from the cold, and his lips were even faintly purple. But as he was pulled to lean against Shu Dajia and walked in the empty alley, with no one around, some unusual thoughts arose out of nowhere.

He and Shu Dajia were like inseparable companions, and no one else could enter their world. He was special to Shu Dajia.

Shu Yun was in a hurry to go back and change Jiang Yan's clothes; Jiang Yan looked like she was about to catch a cold. She didn't know that the boy standing right next to her was thinking, "Walk slower, walk even slower."

When the courtyard appeared before them, Jiang Yan gradually came to his senses. What was he thinking? Did he want to monopolize all the benefits of the Shu family? He was enjoying the favors of the Shu family but still hoped to gain a special status. Deep down, he still carried the greed of someone of lowly birth.

Shu Yun pushed him into the side room, "Dry off the water on your body and hair, change into dry clothes, and then come out and drink the ginger soup."

Jiang Yan stared blankly at the clean handkerchief stuffed into her hand, while she could hear Shu Yun's footsteps fading into the distance as she walked towards the kitchen.

But he felt it wasn't his fault. Who wouldn't want to be close to someone like Master Shu, especially someone like him who came from such a difficult background? To him, Master Shu was like a lifeline, and she was so kind to him. How could he let such an opportunity slip by?

He buried his face in the handkerchief, which had a faint fragrance, just like the one on Shu Dajia.

I just want to preserve this warmth, and I don't mind using some means to achieve it.
