"Hurry, hurry, hurry!" The steward, wearing a brocade hat, shouted at the gate of Changde Courtyard, "Go and invite Doctor Liu over."
Chaos erupted at the entrance of Changde Hospital as people were being sent out one after another by the man called the steward to fetch doctors.
Shu Yun stood sideways in the alley, her back pressed against the wall. Only when the number of people coming and going on the road gradually decreased and the space was clear enough for her to walk through did she prepare to leave.
"Lift the old master out a little," the butler said anxiously, sweating profusely. "Be gentle! You clumsy bunch! Be gentle! Can't you understand human language?!"
It was the housekeeper's last-minute decision that made Shu Yun, who had already turned to leave, stop in her tracks.
The old master of the Xie family lay on the bench, his face pale, breathing rapidly, his hands clenched into claws as he gripped the front of his clothes tightly.
It looked like the illness had suddenly flared up.
Shu Yun wasn't acting out of pity; she simply sensed an extremely strong Jiang Yan aura emanating from Old Master Xie.
Her gaze fell on the guard standing straight beside the elderly man with his sword at his side. The patterns on his armor were exactly the same as those on the armor worn by the guards who had pointed their swords at her that night.
Because of these two points, Shu Yun offered her help.
"Dr. Shu, you've arrived."
The old man on the high seat was no longer the same person who had suffered a sudden illness at Changde Hospital. His face was rosy and he was full of energy. His eyes were like those of a hawk, fixed on Shu Yun below the hall.
Shu Yun carried the medicine box, letting Old Master Xie scrutinize her with his sharp gaze.
The female doctor in the hall calmly accepted his scrutiny.
Sun Xiefu was right. This female doctor named Shu Yun was indeed extraordinary. Last night, he ordered people to investigate her background thoroughly, and they found that she seemed to have appeared out of thin air in Xiliang City.
The forged deed suddenly appeared when he suddenly fell ill, and even declared his feelings for his grandson in front of everyone.
Old Master Xie's face darkened, and he looked coldly at Shu Yun below the hall, "Who exactly are you?"
As soon as he finished speaking, a large number of soldiers poured into the front hall, their spear tips all pointing at the slender white figure below.
Xie Fu suspected she was a spy from the Southern Barbarians, but these past few days she had come to the Xie residence to treat him, and judging from her behavior, she didn't seem like a spy from the Southern Barbarians, but rather more like a woman from the Central Plains.
Shu Yun sighed; in the end, it was still the same.
Without a diviner to wield the brush and arrange her identity, she herself infiltrated the mortal realm and tried to blend into the crowd, making her identity a major problem.
She could conjure up a certificate that was almost identical to the people here, but she couldn't make her own background completely airtight; a closer look would reveal flaws.
"You've been wearing a veil to cover your face the whole time, are you afraid someone will recognize you?"
Old Master Xie had fought on the battlefield for many years, and his iron-fisted methods and imposing manner would have been evident. Any other ordinary woman would have been so frightened that she would have told him everything.
Unfortunately, she is Shu Yun, and she can't convincingly portray those frightened expressions. Her acting is unrealistic and only fuels suspicion.
Shu Yun stood below the hall for a moment, then raised her hand and removed her veil.
The front hall fell silent for a moment. The soldiers who had seen Shu Yun's face stood there dumbfounded, their long spears, which they had been holding high, slowly lowering.
There are many beautiful women in the world, each with their own unique charm. Some are gentle and graceful, like daughters of noble families, while others are charming and cute, though they may not be as dignified and elegant as daughters of officials.
Chen Xiaoxiao of Huanhua Tower is a typical young lady from a prominent family. It is said that her father was once very popular with the emperor of the Central Plains and held the official rank of third grade. Her mother was also granted the title of Lady of the Imperial Decree.
With such a status and position, even within the imperial city of the Central Plains, she would be among the most outstanding young ladies from various noble families.
Unfortunately, things changed drastically. The Chen family, which was once highly regarded, was raided overnight. Chen Xiaoxiao's father was sentenced to immediate execution, all of the family's property was confiscated, and all the family members were exiled to Xiliang.
When Chen's mother received the imperial decree, she had no choice but to lead her daughter to kneel down to receive it, expressing her deep gratitude to the emperor for his magnanimity and mercy in sparing the lives of her family.
Chen Xiaoxiao was instructed by a nanny who had taught princesses in the palace. She was proficient in all the arts, including music, chess, calligraphy, and painting, and was the most famous young lady from an official family in their Xiliang region.
The men of Xiliang were willing to spend huge sums of money to visit the Huanhua Tower by the Huai River, just to catch a glimpse of what a true lady from a prominent family in the inland was like, and how she differed from the women of Xiliang.
Chen Xiaoxiao was truly different from the women of Xiliang. She was gentle and soft-spoken, and she could describe all the musical instruments that the people of the Xie family had never seen before.
Later, more and more daughters of officials were sent from the Central Plains, and they all looked just like Chen Xiaoxiao. They were petite and cute, and spoke in a gentle and soft voice. After everyone had seen Chen Xiaoxiao, and since all the new daughters of officials looked the same, they lost their curiosity about the women from the Central Plains.
Now they see a woman who does not belong to their Xiliang.
Unlike Chen Xiaoxiao's gentle beauty, this woman stood silently in the hall, dressed in a simple white dress, her gaze calm and her temperament aloof.
Yet her features were not as cold as her overall demeanor; instead, they were stunningly beautiful and captivating. Her pair of shimmering black eyes seemed to hold the depths of autumn water, and a single glance from her could make one's body go weak.
The woman in the flowing skirt stood there, holding a white veil and hat, calmly accepting the gazes from all directions. Regardless of whether those gazes were kind or malicious, her expression remained indifferent, as if everything around her was irrelevant to her, completely at ease.
Shu Yun looked at the old master sitting in the seat of honor, who was looking at her with some surprise, and explained why she had chosen to wear a veil, "I wear a veil only to avoid some unnecessary trouble, not because I am a spy sent from elsewhere, as you think."
